Quiet on here today …

Whats the predictions for Stoke?

I says 3-0 to the Latics goals from Di Santo and Kone in the first half with a Boselli header in the second.

2-1 Latics (0-1, 2-1). Pullis will have them up for it after the Swindon debacle. Always difficult / awkward to play against.

Another clean sheet (2-0, ditto 2011/12) would be nice.

Some fans seem to forget that Jordi’s goals last season earned us 10 points with out which we would be in the championship [/qu

Our great end to the season was based on two major decisions 1) The change of defensive formation and 2) He dropped Gomez for Shaun Maloney and the rest as they say is history.

the ten points was pre christmas ya crackpot
Not entirely correct, you’ll have included his 15 mins cameo performance against Arsenal at Emirates (including goal)

On the goals front, he (forward) scored as many as (a) Caldwell, and (b) Boyce, from open play (two penalties excluded). Hardly, a bucket full.

Whilst not a Gomez-hater (‘boo-er’ etc. … he has had his moments), he hasn’t done it consistently to date for me and isn’t in the 1st 11.

Acknowledge his great goal against Forest. Sign of things to come ? … then Martinez would have a (nice) problem.

Difference being……we’ve got Ben Watson, Jordi Gomez etc taking our free kicks and Figueroa standing there watching, when he could be launching the thing and at worst missing the back of the net the same as the others.

In Figueroa’s time with us how many free kicks have we scored from, direct, and who scored them. Any statto’s out there?

Variety is the spice as they say….it certainly wouldn’t hurt to give him free rein on a couple of occasions. Shake it up a bit. Give the opposition something to think about. We may have Roberto Carlos in our midst, without even knowing it !

Like I said, other than Taylor and Charlie boy (Rodders a couple), who’s delivered from free kicks recently …. ??

Whilst I’ve time for Watson, his delivery from set pieces is B awful. Gomez… nothing springs to mind (they certainly ain’t be raining in..)

in reply to: Di Canio #92251
I thought beating us was the greatest moment in the club’s history (I presume winning the League Cup against Arsenal at Wembley all those years ago now gets moved to third place).

I supose now they are like Barcelona we can expect greater things.

Swindon’s greatest result

The guy is a total fruitcake

Nothing wrong with a bit of passion.

Football needs more of …

Probably lucky to be standing at the final whistle….As well, Swindon’s 3 goal-man took in good spirits Di Canio’s well-aimed kick up the @rse (pitch side) after goal number 2

Wonder how ‘good ole’ Bobby Campbell would have reacted ?

One major thing impressed me about Miyaichi – and yes I know it is just one thing to begin with:

He broke from the halfway line, drew a defender and then squared it to Callum, aware that he was there.

A player of recent vintage (I will keep him anonymous, but his initials are VM) would have gone straight at the defender, ignored Callum, and tried to beat him himself. 8 times out 10 he would have failed, but twice he would have succeeded and been hailed as brilliant.

I prefer Ryo’s approach.

[Cue new song starting “His name is Ryo….”}

McManaman’s skill and composure to finish arguably even more impressive.

Visions of Michael OWEN in his prime ! Coolness personified. Fantastic. That boy’s got talent …

4 goals of similar quality against Stoke, Saturday and our MOTD pundits will be drooling all night about the quality ! (NOT, … because we’re only Wigan)

We’ll just have to keep banging at the door !

in reply to: Figueroa – Free Kicks #92240
My point being Griff that he should a. run up and tw@t it rather than b. fanny about curling it round a wall.

Stuart Pearce, Johnny Metgod etc never used to p1ss about

Agreed. Could be a free-kick specialist (with a little practice). Just look at Bainsey (Everton).

Apart from Taylor and N’Zogbia don’t recall much success in recent times. Gomez ?? (maybe, my memory fails me…?).

In addition (as alternative to Tuncay) …

Reported (Daily Mail) to be considering a bid for Bolton £7m-rated winger (South Korean, Lee Chung-Yong, 24), suffered broken leg last year, back to form this ?

Would be surprised to see us invest so heavily. Still if Mr Deep Pockets
has got the bit between the teeth and is committed to Top 10 finish, you never know ….

My noblot season ticket mate says his nerves have been shattered following the horrific double leg break he sustained 12 months ago. He says he is pulling out of every tackle at the moment and just hasn’t the confidence yet to function as well as he did before the injury. There’s nowt saying he won’t get back to his best, but it may be a gamble with the transfer fee that’s being banded about. :woohoo:
Your ‘mate’ Dries Mertens’ doesn’t look too shabby (granted only extracts seen).

Noted, by way of interest, that the Bolton lad didn’t make the squad for the game down at Crawley tonight (played against Forest, Friday last). Anything to be read into that ? Your guess as good as mine ….

Wasn’t convinced by Crusat on this evening’s showing. Acknowledge that he did play Gomez in for 3rd.

Great performance by a ‘2nd string’. Bloody hell, man we’re WIGAN !

Excellent football, cracking goals
Motivated to a man – augers well for competition for places
Apparent cover across all areas of pitch (bar goalkeeper…Pollitt ?)
3 days remain to do some business …
Utilisation of full width of pitch (L to R)
– Stam – excellent delivery for 1st goal
– Figs /Beausej on LHS – unbeatable – MUST start week in/out. Balance!
– Martinez to choose 2 off 3: Caldwell, Alcaraz, Ramis
=> Alcarez sending off simplifies Martinez team selection (Stoke)
Bosselli on the score sheet and good movement (PL – to be convinced)
All forwards now off the mark (Di S, Kone, Bos)
Moses…who ? Excellent 4th (Myachi, McManaman)
Good job Bobby !!

Negatives (ultra critical)
– Alcaraz sending-off ….very unlucky (mistimed, failure to take ball)
– Ramis, done for Forest goal

STOKE 11

Al Habsi
Caldwell, Alcarez / Ramis, Figueroa
Boyce, McCarthy, MacArthur, Beausejour
Maloney, Di Santo, Kone

Subs

Pollitt, Stam, Bosselli, McManaman, Myachi, Watson, Gomez

Why is there a such a clamour to resign former players. They had their time here and decided to move on to “better” themselves, however you wish to define that. The fact that they are now surplus to requirements at other clubs says it all really.

No clamour to re-sign, merely making the point that he was better off at Wigan than he was at ‘aerial bombardment’ Stoke (where he ended up after Spurs). Personal opinion, of course.

Moving to Stoke was a disaster from day 1 – not surprised.

Talents wasted at Stoke.

Would have been much better off back at Wigan (money aside…), anywhere else for that matter.

Had a cracking first season at Spurs, … derailed by brother issue

in reply to: 2nd Half #92088

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Old Trafford the only place where we’ve yet to do anything….

Rooney out(assumes no miraculous Ferguson recovery), makeshift back four, the Latics carrying last years form into this ……

Isn’t it about time we were ‘party poopers'(OK, … settle for point) ?

Win against Stoke (not easy) and we go there full of confidence.

Blackburn did ’em last year, why not Wigan this ?

COME ON LATICS !!!!!!!!! :cheer:

in reply to: 2nd Half #92086

Positives :

– Great result (result > performance (off the mark !!)

– Clean sheet in last 172 mins (little lady luck and fine goalkeeping)

– Both Di Santo and Kone (1st full game in Premier) in the goals

– Beausejour back (squad getting back to full strength)

– Still time for reinforcement before window closes

AND

to round off a good day, …..Rodders did Rooney at Old Trafford today and has probably put him out the United game on 15th.

HUGO, HUGO, ….. :cheer: :cheer:

Disappointed JB didn’t start on the left. If fit, would bring on to add a little quality and help improve service to / improve our potency up front.

Figueroa to drop back in defence…

in reply to: tuncay #92071
just seen on sky sports news teletext that ourselves & southampton are after tuncay who is available on a free. would he be a decent signing for us. could fill the void left behind by moses/rodellega.

Seen in the Alderley Bar and Grill (Alderley Edge) not too long ago. Maybe Messers Caldwell and Watson (near neighbours) already know him ? Quiet word in his ear, etc.

Good on his day, but a bit hit and miss recently (starved of regular spot in First 11 …)
