Bullard left because he got offered more money by Fulham, and then did same again when he went to Hull. At Latics he probably just did what the likes of Ellington, Roberts, Barlow etc before him did where they had a good season and asked for an improved contract. I imagine Whelan’s got one of them trap doors in his office like Mr.Burns and when the words pay rise is mentioned they end up in the gant
29 April 2010 at 2:16 pm in reply to: Dave says we wont be throwing money around this summer…… #311762009/10 – 17,873 (Currently)
2008/9 – 18,350
2007/8 – 19,046
2006/7 – 18,159
2005/6 – 20,610From that I reckon a crowd of 20,286 on Monday would give an average of 18k for the season which isn’t bad given some of the performances
No idea how tickets are going but maybe the club should just do what the rugby do and decide what crowd they are going to announce before the game ;)
At Dirty Leeds a few years ago they had Strongbow on tap…proper cider not glorified alcopops. I think they sponsored them at the time. Some decent Irish whisky minatures would be nice, although bringing a hip flask in is cheaper ;) Guinness just ain’t practical at football especially when some nob would ask for a Shamrock in it  though Guinness tents at races work well
There’s enough clowns go watching us already without having a McDonalds in the ground :D
NAILED ON……………
But not if Bob plays Scharner,Scotland,Gomez or Marino………..
Yeah, course they will.
Funny that Vat youve just reminded me of something. I said before the Liverpool game that I thought we had a chance of beating them. You had a go at me over it, calling me allsorts, attempted to volley me all over the board and promised to come back and laugh at me when we were in the bottom three a couple of weeks later
Well I’m still waiting
PS I don’t think we’ll beat Chelsea but looking forward to it regardless
Dots of fun in a sea of dross.A bit like your contributions on here, minus the dots of fun.
Fair play fella, sorry his football and tactics ain’t to your liking
The manager does to talk of a long term plan and here’s hoping the summer and next season will see it continue to come together
Bottom line is I don’t care how many points we get or who we get them against, staying in this league, hopefully for another 6 or 16 years will mean that a whole generation will come through growing up with Wigan Athletic as a top flight outfit. If we grow the crowds to 20,000+ over the next few years, it will build the long term support and stability the club needs to remain a dominant force in the town and in football despite certain people in the town constantly wanting our demise….
Egg chaser? Clueless.Don’t knock northerners either petal. There are quite a few of us on here.
You are the clueless one if you are you saying that beating Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool didn’t give you in your words “a bit of excitement”? Or beating Burnley 3-1 at their place and in the last minute a ours? Or turning over Villa & Wolves at their place?
A great assessment there Atletico
He’s made mistakes, he’s a rookie dealing with a comparative shoe string budget and yesterday summed it up in a microcosm. Sublime passing in the first half yesterday quietened the home crowd. Great attacking movement but not direct enough and undone by woeful defending and a wonder goal that 9 times out of 10 would have cleared the stand. We have a team of good young players and several relative newcomers to the cut and thrust of Premier League football, they can only get stronger. If he can work on the defensive side of things over the summer I predict good times ahead.
Please ignore the egg chaser, he’s just passing through. He doesn’t understand that the Premier League is one of the best of the leagues in the world rather than some parochial closed shop franchise sport where oversized Northern men and Aussies rough each other up
Or th… bilge…
Any serious points to add to the thread?
You clearly haven’t
They sure do, but Latics don’t dress these things up as something they aren’t, which you could argue we should!
It also helps when the rugby play so few home games, meaning half a dozen or so of these promotions can have a dramatic effect on the average crowd.
It’s all smoke and mirrors.
Or that the rugby suffers because rugby supporters don’t travel in numbers. Less away fans lowers your average attendance.
Or that rugby is a lot cheaper, £1 a game for kid’s season tickets
Or that they count people as being in attendance, whether they turn up or not. And loads probably don’t seeing as they are freebie or dirt cheap tickets anyway
The next step, if it hasn’t been done already will probably be dumping several thousands of tickets in the bottom of the Leeds & Liverpool canal and counting them in as well?
Oh and as for away fans – only 60% of fans at rugby games are actually from the “home” town, the remainder are bussed in from every pit village in the North of England enticed by cheap ticket deals. Deduct that lot and youre probably left with under 10k Wiganers
”youre post here weve stopped up because of the dross below us, no my friend weve stopped up because weve got more points than the teams below us”I don’t see your point with that statement. If Atherton Colls, Atherton LR & Leigh Genesis were promoted to the top flight with their current squads etc.. then Latics & no doubt everybody else would stay up coz a) There were 3 teams really poor teams in the division & b) coz those 3 teams got fewer points than everybody else
Latics are in the Premier League on merit
If three teams finish below us, they will get relegated on merit
The same way as they came into the Premier League on merit
And will be replaced by three teams who come up on meritThere’s a key word in there somewhere ;)
I don’t understand? How do you propose to introduce three teams from Leigh and Atherton into the Premier League? This is the most ridiculous, nonsense argument I’ve ever seen on here
And it’s coming from someone who has spent all season moaning and whining and is now unwilling to accept that Roberto has performed equally as well as Jewell, Hutchings & Bruce, even managed to achieve more in many respects by turning over some top teams and you can’t bear to actually give him a bit of credit for what he has achieved.
Maybe in the world cup this year they will kick everyone out and just have Brazil playing the Shetland Islands in the final just so you can say ‘yeah that brazil have got lucky and it’s only cos the opposition is shit’
Hello, I am a frequent poster on the rlfans site yes thats right, im a warriors fan, i was having a browse through your board, seeing as i do not hate latics and do want them to stay in the premier league. However, this nonsense about the warriors always posting hating latics on the rlfans site is rubbish. We havent posted a topic about latics for a while, i do believe its just a hope that we spend as much time ranting about you, as you do about us.
At the end of the day i just think that you have this idea that all warriors fans hate latics, well we all dont hate you :) .
I hope you have a good season. I will be supporting, i do hope some of you tune into rugby league. I guarentee you’ll enjoy it. Its an awesome game to watch if you pick the right match.
Thank you for not hating us. However, if you are a frequent poster on rlfans you can’t have looked very hard to find evidence of Latics being hated
This thread was posted yesterday http://forums.rlfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=452063
A quick scan of this four page thread through shows at least TWENTY derogatory digs at Latics from different people, ranging from wishing we were relegated, calling us inbreds, “Scousers” (because Scousers REALLY choose little Latics over Liverpool and Everton  ) and it goes on.
Now you’ve done your little crusade on here, perhaps you would like to go and put a few people straight on there – although good luck, anyone defending Latics on there gets banned or bullied off the board by the Pravda style RL fascists who don’t appear to want an open debate
Most rugby fans don’t just want Latics relegated, they want them extinct – as indeed was Maurice’s little plan – is it really such a surprise that a few Latics fans don’t like the rugby?
By contrast, what have Wigan Athletic ever done to deserve such hatred from people from it’s own town? Maybe you’d be best trying to understand that…….
Now we deal with egg chasers who make it a point of putting Liverpool or Man U shirts or stickers in their car next to their WRLFC stickers – these are the same die hard “Rugby is the only sport for me” people – this is out of pure spite for their local premiership football team. They backed the wrong team and thats why they can’t wait to see our demise again. They hated us when we were bottom of Division Four because we existed, how dare there be another professional sports club in their “back yard”. Our team has been successful in spite of them and gone on to play for five years in the biggest league in the world at the national and global sport. Us Wigan Athletic fans have lived through that journey, a story that is the envy of football fans across the globe and gained us recognition all over the world.
Wigan has only ever been famous for rugby league in countries which play Rugby League, of which there are hardly any. Football is followed in every country across the world. The only reason that RL fans hate Wigan Athletic is because we had the cheek to steal a bit of their limelight.
I can think of dozens of reasons why Wigan Athletic fans would hate Wigan RL going back decades and even Wigan Borough before that but I can’t think of any other than the above why Wigan Warriors fans would hate Wigan Athletic
As others have said, it just makes them look like the bitter individuals they are. More open minded folk from other towns and cities would gladly support both. I used to go to both as many Wigan lads did but I don’t like bullies and during the 80s the rugby club, council, media, police etc did all they could to wipe Wigan Athletic out of existence like Wigan Borough before them
Some of us in this town support underdogs rather than latching onto successful clubs elsewhere like the glory hunting rugby men
Great motorway links for their mostly out of town fans
”Roberto’s transfer signings have been poor I agree, he should have bought Terry for £30m, Gerrard for £40m, Rooney for £50m and Messi for £100m and put them all on £300k a weekInstead he has spent very little on players unproven at this level and gambled on cheap foreign imports.
Anyone would think that he can’t afford to go out and spend £100m on a top class squad.”
What a, quite frankly, pathetic, childish response – with the exception of the middle paragraph
I don’t claim he’s got an unlimited pot to spend but the original poster can’t claim that our current manager has been left with a load of dross he can’t shift (when most of it has been shifted) or indeed use the word dross to condemn the previous managers signings when the current manager’s signings are as bad – and in some cases worseFair enough, I was just making an exaggerated point which is that it all comes down to “you get what you pay for” and our manager hasn’t got the money to buy quality so has to buy cheap and unproven.
We are 15th in the table and that is an overachievement.
If you don’t see it that way, then please tell me which of the other 14 clubs we should be above because we have higher gate receipts, transfer budget and wage bills?
I find it pathetic and childish not to mention completely baffling that people ( and this isn’t particularly aimed at you TL ) seem unable to accept our position in the table in the biggest and richest league in the world and are have turned so aggressively and are slating a rookie manager with the odds stacked against him to even stay in this division instead of supporting him.
