1. If we lose, we will stay up on 39 points if we lose by just 1 goal and Blackpool and Birmingham both lose by at least 3 or 4 goals respectively
Feel free to correct me if any of this is wrong! We have scored 3 more goals than Birmingham so we will stay up if we lose by 1 and Birmingham and Blackpool both lose by 3 unless Birmingham score 3 more we do on Saturday (and still lose by 3).
There is a scenario where we end up in a dead-heat (same goal difference, same goals) with Birmingham and have to play a best-of-3 game of stone, paper, scissors for who stays up.If Blackpool stay up by beating Utd reserves it’ll stink. To be fair, if we get relegated it will because we don’t get enough points not because Blackpool get too many (regardless of who/what sort of side they get them against)
if we can’t get enough points to stay up then we deserve to go downvery optimistically – a draw and a narrow defeat could be enough
in any case, good for us that by the time we play west ham next sunday we will already know the results of wolves, blackpool, and blackburn from the day before
We are now in a position where we are relying on more than one side to mess up …mathematically – 2 wins would definitely give us more points than West Ham and at least as many points as Blackpool; it would also give us as many or more points than Blackburn and/or Wolves given that they play each other last game;
we are not in a great position but at the minute we are NOT really relying on more than one team to mess up;
unless Man United lose both of their last 2 games (Blackburn, Blackpool) then 2 wins would (almost definitely) keep us up… we are very nearly a good side.I agree.
Saturday saw us play (and win) in exactly the manner in which the manager insists and illustrated perfectly how good it could be.I take it you’ll not be supporting the plan. Shame but maybe this approach is not everyone’s cup of tea.

I’ll be as giddy as a baby giraffe – and probably as stable – by 3pm. However, I’ve never been in a ground 20 minutes before kick-off in my life so I’m afraid I can’t comply with that one.
My colour of clothing depends on what my wife has ironed and I will only be carrying a phone, a wallet, door keys and a change of skids, so no space for a scarf.
Other than that I’m in.

Ditto. Ditto. Ditto.
To be of assistance – if you need a change of skids, I have just seen an advert for some rather eye-catching fancy pants apparently for sale on Hindley Market which may be of interest ;)I dont think they are going to be sat around or playing golf whilst in La Manga and chances are they will probably play some kind of behind closed doors game against a local teamAt the risk of sounding unduly critical, I personally don’t think that either a trip to La Manga or a friendly against a tappy-tappy no tackling team (should it happen) is any way the ideal preparation for the 9 blood and guts game which are left starting with Birmingham who will be the absolute opposite of a local Spanish team.
I only hope that Graham Barrow has taken his air rifle to keep them on their toes and that they come back with a bit of fire in their bellies.I’ll start of by saying the population of Wigan compared with the home attendance is the best in the Premier League. There’s a rugby club in the town, Orrel Rugby Union. Oh, and Wigan Warriors. :?
We are by far the newest club in the Football League and only 2/3 generations have past since we began life in the old 3rd divison – and were ammited to the football league.
With so many well established clubs already in the North West, people in the town already have a club to support unless (like griff) you change team … which not many will do.
We aren’t the most attreactive team to support with us being smashed 9-1, 4-0, 6-0, 4-0, 5-0, 3-0, 8-0, 4-0, 5-0, 4-1 etc….. all under Roberto Martinez. Lets not forget being knocked out the cup by Notts County last season.
Unemployment is hitting the town hard and with so many pubs providing Latics games live it’s hard for the club to get them filling the seats. Also, WishFM have all home and away games on their station.
People that support the Rugby Club 1st off are likely to support a club like Man Utd, Liverpool or Everton because loyalty to both Wigan clubs is hard to come by.
Away support at certain grounds have sparked a bit of talk this season … including Everton (where we took more than Bolton) and Spurs (which we weren’t far off Bolton).
The ‘joy’ of Prem football is fading away and many hardcore fans are starting to drop off waiting for the club to be relegated … then starting following us again.
Ok, there’s my points … i’m ready to be ridiculed. :teasing-knob:
P.S – We took about 400 fans to Arsenal with some not being allowed tickets because the away end was ‘sold out’ Only a few Arsenal fans were in the away area too ….
not sure that this exactly makes us the best fans in the Premier League but fair play, good reasoned response
I hope they ask him what colour shoes he’s wearing :)
I hope they also ask him really mean questions like: “You were the lowest scorers in England until last week and you let in countless goals …. your supporters have also booed the team off repeatedly for the last 13 months. This didn’t happen with Bruce or Jewell in-charge. Why?” :angry-boxing:
Maybe they should ask him, “Wigan Athletic have some of the worst supporters in the country, how do you put up with their none-stop moaning?”
I get behind my team more than most, I just want some real answers from him about subjects such as some Wigan fans wanting him out. I want him to stay.
If you want some real answers then maybe you should offer some real questions – questions which invite answers rather than ‘questions’ which simply act as an attempt at a telling off.
I would suggest that asking “why have supporters booed your team off for the last 13 months” would be stupid. We have possibly the BEST supporters in the United Kingdom, certainly better than all in the Premier League. On what basis do you think that this is true?

He also – on another thread – only watched the 2nd half of the West Brom game, through no fault of his own, I might add. But his assumption is that we were the same in first as the second. So, he’s a glass (first and second) half empty man
sounds like he would benefit from a bit of a matt jackson nudge ;)
Really? Villa we played for the last 10 minsdid you not watch any of the the first half?
glass half empty
if relegation is the only way to get rid of the manager who has taken us backwards 6 years?backwards 6 years?
seriously – did you watch any of the games during most of the 2nd season with jewell, the time under hutchings, or the 2nd half of the bruce’s 2nd season?
i would argue that we have as much potential (good young players) in the squad as we have ever had and if we can get through the next 3 months intact (whichever division we end up in) then we have some very good players to go forward with under a manager who is trying to build for the future and is not only ‘living for today’MARTINEZ IN
could you see us going to Stoke the last game needing a win and getting it?honestly, YES
Watched the documentary last night about our first season in the prem and I noticed a few things.
First of all the team spirit and togetherness that was in the team was incredible and what we are missing now (could you see the current crop going round to someones garage)
Also Whelan said that the most important person at the club is the manager and it is vital that he can do a good job. A bit ironic with the clown we have in place at the momentkettle, pot.
I would suggest that it is easy to have team spirit and togetherness when things are going well, as they were.
I would further suggest that a similar video of the second season – with the same management and most of the same players – would not display the same level of team spirit nor togetherness (the Sheff Utd game apart).
It is exactly the same with the fans.
There was great spirit, togetherness, and lots of back-slapping when things were on the up for about 10 years. Now that things aren’t going as easily (whoever you think is to blame, and it hasn’t just been the past 2 seasons) there are more toys being thrown out of prams than at mothercare on a busy sunday afternoon -
