After that today can’t say I’m that optimistic. Lots of good football but zero creativity or goal threat. Grigg looks one paced, Davies just a big lump who can’t move. Still. It was only a friendly. Positives were Junior, Power and McCann until he got injured. Roll on next Saturday! Though both like having the last word if it came to a MENSA test I’m pretty sure old Tez would come out a loser. After scoring in the Scottish challenge cup against second tier Scottish opposition (containing the mercurial Fraser Fyvie) it’s obvious these lads would have set the league on fire for us. They were both tremendous in the Latics shirt and played a vital part in our success last season. Why we sent Tavernier on loan is beyond us all and why Bristol City showed no interest in signing him is beyond me. Absolute disgrace! Looking at Bristol City’s squad last year I wouldn’t say that looked like a 99 point team. I’ve not a clue what standard is in this league. All I know is that most of those that have left were miles off in the championship and if that’s where we are aiming to get back to I would start again. Spoke to Gary in May when he commented that most of the squad seemed flat and mentally scarred from last season. Least he has done what he said he would. Aye. Taverniers a real star! A journeyman whose played for 9 clubs at 23. The majority in the bottom 2 divisions. To be fair Tavernier hardly pulled up Any trees when he played. Average at best. Not crazy. He was utter shite too as the ratio shows. The reality being we haven’t seen enough of any of them players you mention to make a real judgement!3 goals in 40 appearances collectively suggests they didn’t exactly pull up any trees! Think I’ll reserve comment before seeing the players coming in. We’ve all been excited about your Holts, Rieras and Delorts but the reality was something quite different! After all James Tavernier walked into Bristol City’s championship winning side! Fair point. Would respect him more if he gave us more details of this derisory offer. If a bus driver approaching his 70th birthday starting hitting cars, dozing off at the wheel and driving at 15mph he wouldn’t be offered a new deal if he was on 30k and an apprentice bus driver who had his best days ahead of him was cheaper. Can’t believe he expects sympathy. It’s not like he’s been working for free. At almost 36 and after some of his performances last season I can’t see the problem with him being offered a deal that pays him for the games he plays. There is no room for sentiment in football and I think we all know Boyces best days are well gone. He might get a one year deal at a club in our league but can’t see much else. I speak as a relation of a boy who plays at Liverpool. Basically club’s like Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool now have satellite academies in Wigan to monopolise all local talent from the ages of 5-7. Wigan meanwhile only begin training boys at 7 and 8 at poor facilities meaning by then any local gems at that age go to one of the big 3. Games then start at under 9s where Wigan play the likes of Rochdale, Bury and Blackpool whilst the big club’s play each other. At that age their would be little point in a lower league club playing a Liverpool as in my experience the score can be humiliating. Because these club’s have these satellite centres in around 10 places they are obviously in a stronger position as they have sifted through all local talents. At the ages of 10-15 we would generally get those released by these bigger club’s. If you look at those signed professionally this year the majority have been released by bigger club’s from 14 onwards (Macmanaman and Baines came similarly). Sadly the approach of the big club’s and our lack of vision/ambition renders us sterile in attracting the best local talents. Kind of sums up what’s wrong with English football! No we can’t. Academy football is tiered on facilities and Christopher park can’t be improved to have the number of pitches (both indoor and outdoor) so we will continue to be in Category 3 playing the club’s with the poorest facilities and against the poorest players. We play some of our academy games at John Rigby with pretty awful facilities in comparison to most other clubs. Let’s just accept second best then. Costs around a million a year to run a top level academy. Amazing lack of foresight by the club for us to end up at this point. If we had made that commitment when we got to the premier league who knows where we would be now.
