In Lehmann’s terms they’re just not that funny
I understand what you’re saying Doug and I assume you’d be a lot happier had we qualified for Europe via our league position as that would suggest he had the resources, size of squad and quality of player to enable us to take Europe seriously, right?
But it’s also a BIT like saying a team shouldn’t get promoted cos they finished in the lowest play of place or they finished 2nd but 10 points behind the champions.
I don’t think we should be looking this gift horse in the mouth as even if we are relegated, Europe gives us something else to look forward to and
From a pure fan perspective, having got into the Prem and stayed up, the next and I’d say final achievement for me was to see us play a competitive game in Europe. I could have probsbly stopped supporting us extra income to support our parachute payments and healthy financial footing, and should therefore attract players who can take us straight back up.after that ;)
But I always assumed that qualification would be via league position as never in my wildest dreams did I think we’d reach a major cup final and especially not the FA Cup. So qualifying for Europe via a major cup final is a double boost and still gives me the dream of league position qualification to look forward to.Unfortunately Galactic, there isn’t a huge amount of money to be made from playing in Europe.
For each qualifier a club receives £100k, which, after the cost of flying the team there and back, plus hotel and ground transportation, doesn’t go very far.
For reaching the group stage, a club gets £1.3m, which, minus travel etc, would probably come out £750k – £1m at the most.
Even winning the group would only bring in an extra £1m.
So, realistically, £2m for winning the group stage – the equivalent of two players’ wages for the season.
Where we will benefit, as you’ve pointed out, is by appealing to a better quality of player because of out participation in Europe.[/quote]
Bloomin ‘eck – that’s a bit paltry isn’t it? Better than nout tho I suppose. Can we get paid in Euros?
That’s quite funny considering the typical Deutsch sense of humour!

He looked pretty good vs Hudersfield (wasn’t it?) and a damn site more solid than that flyweight Lopez. We took a punt on young Callum, and his youthful exuberance has shone through. Why not Roman’s? Got to be better than tortoise Caldwell and maybe even tired Scharner.
Research or no research, Allardyce has no right to mouth off about us when his own team are not in Year 1 by any stretch and have been relegated once, BY US, during the 8 years we’ve been maintaining our first ever stay.
How many more chances is this animal going to get?
Shame on the scousers for standing by him again.
The sooner he leaves football, not just English football, the better.Terrible shame to see how such poor stewardship of a once successful club, not unlike our own, has led to such a sad demise.
We have 31 points from 33 games, having just played 4 away games on the bounce, 3 in London, 3 in 7 days, 1 vs the Champions and 1 vs a team that has only lost 4 league games at home all season. Something had to give.
Last season we were in exactly the same position – 31 from 33 – having narrowly lost to Chelsea and then just beaten Utd.
Two seasons ago we had 31 from 32 games.
Admittedly there were more teams still in the mix at those stages, but actually with just one relegation place to avoid and (theoretically) only 1 other team to monitor, it does simplify things somewhat.
As Griff says, as long as our worst case is that on the last day of the season it’s still in our own hands then that’s all we can ask for.
And as someone else posted elsewhere – a winner takes all game at home vs Villa on the last day of the season? I’ll take that now.very strange but what would the betting have been for wigan to get in prem league and in first season get to league cup final lose 4-o to manu
last eight years in prem league then in last season get into FA cup final against the other manchester club and another 4-0 hiding
what a price that would have beenBicky – do you ever have any positive thoughts?? :(
its a promise i made not to go ages ago not to to walk in the DW while whelan is in controlYou do know that the final is at Wembley and not the DW don’t you?
Even deeper now.
Looks like it’s between us and Villa for the drop…Me and me mates got emails from him last night and we thought it might be a scam, but we did some research and it all checked out. Spoke to him twice this morning and ordered all 6 of our tickets in one go over the phone. Was able to specify the block and he even said he’d try to group the 6 tickets in 2 adjacent rows of 3.
He was extremely friendly and helpful, despite clearly having the first of many very busy days ahead.
If you’er sugesting Boyce dropping back to make a back 4 then I’d say that would be a mistake given what happened vs Liverpool.
Be interesting to see if Ben Watson makes the bench though to give us something different in midfield
. You must have better eyes than me Griff (tho that’s not difficult) as I was sat towards the back in the £50 seats in 503 and couldn’t see/work out where the cup would be lifted.
