What’s this first season nonsense? Did football only begin for Wigan in 2005? ;)

We’ve not lost to them in the Prem at home, but we’ve only managed some serious bore draws since Chimpbonda’s last minute header.

The last time we lost at home would therefore probably be early 90’s, when we were last together in the lower leagues – the old Div 3 wasn’t it?

So odds on for a Fulham away win then…

is that why he wasn’t even on the bench tonight, or is he also crock?

Interestingly, I think we were actually worse once we changed formation. The midfield seemed even more crowded and our front players have been so used to the passing game of late that they weren’t used to dealing with any long balls.

I am no tactical genius, and am willing to bet that neither are you, but why would going to 352 automatically bring about the need for people to chase long balls?
I’m not saying it would, but vs Newcastle it resulted in a crowded midfield, prob cos rodallega was playing slightly behind and wide of boselli and cos Newcastle were hell bent on shutting down any passing. As such we clearly reverted to route 1, as both the manager and some players admitted post match.

If Martinez would take the risk of playing Bos and Rod up front we could see him bag a couple and put the hoodoo behind him.

Moving to 3-5-2 on Sunday was his attempt at that, but was pointless as it was only done with 30 min to go with us already 1-0 down.

For me, yes. I think this is the biggest game we’ve had all year and if we lose it will be a hell of a struggle to get out the relegation zone.

It won’t make or break our season but it is a big test and big opportunity to get some points.

This is only the second time we’ve been in the bottom 3 at Xmas over the last 6 seasons – the last time we were worse off points wise, but the step change had already been made by Whelan (Bruce for Hutchings) and we eventually pulled out.

Worryingly, what I don’t see coming this time is any obvious step change from either Whelan (in Barbados now I imagine) or Bob – more of the same or little tweaks are not going to steer us clear any time soon.

I’ve been seeing posts about the lack of goals this system brings that Bobby plays.

Jewell 05/06 – 45 goals
Jewell 06/07 – 37 goals
Hutch/Bruce 07/08 – 34 goals
Bruce 08/09 – 34 goals
Martinez 09/10 – 37 goals
Martinez 10/11 – who knows, but its on a par for 33ish.

So taking Jewell’s 1st wonder season out, Martinez has equalled or bettered the goals scored in the othe three top flight seasons.

So what is this lack of goals under this system comparing against? Man Utd, Arsenal?

That is in some ways is the most reassuring post I’ve ever seen on this site, but also highlights just how tight our results have been/will be.
The focus therefore has to be on freezing out the opposition until we get the first goal and then seeing the game out (ideally with another goal). My view is that is probably the system Martinez is trying to play, but we’ve only see rare flashes of it and often not in combination.

What are we still doing with Kirkland on our books? What other club relies on a keeper (or any other player) that’s made of glass?
Not even starting his first game for Leicester (and for ages) due to a self inflicted injury (again!) in training says it all. We are wasting money on him.

Likewise Jayt. Just a shame the match truly was an Arse.

I’m all for a CL list of player opinions, maybe we could have a laminated card to take to the game in case of confusion.

I think Di Santo has played ok in the games I saw him in, maybe I havent been to that many.

I can handle you having a go at Thomas, but not Figgy. Where, sorry WHERE did that come from !

I have to disagree. Thomas has been one of our better players this season, but I get very nervous when watching Figgy. In fact he looks very nervous when I see him play.
Thomas being one of our better players is a bit relative though isn’t it? It’s not taking much for anyone to shine at the mo.

A few of us London Latics were talking before the game and we were all of the opinion that we didn’t really ever notice either Diame or Thomas. All of us felt they were both generally invisible, and we were surprised by how much everyone rates them, esp. Thomas this season.

None of us really knew why this was. Maybe we’re missing something as we don’t get to as many games as we used to, and when we do 50% of our attention is on the banter. Maybe it’s a sign of how good they both go about their jobs and don’t draw too much attention to the fruits of their labour. Maybe it’s because none of us feel any real connection to any of the players like we used to.

One of our more talented and solid centre halves over the last few years I thought, but didn’t seem to be given much of a chance to prove himself – a bit like Johannsen and that little Norwegian fella that made 1 mistake at Chelsea and was never heard of again.

Is there something about Scandinavians and Wigan that doesn’t work?

How many times do folk on here need to be told that we are never ever going to play 4-4-2 whilst Bob is in charge. Stop dreaming.

Possesional passing play is not mutually exclusive from direct football.

I was watching the DVDs of our first couuple of Prem seasons the other week and we might have been playing direct balls to the box, but once we had it there we passed it around beautifully, but didn’t over pass, before knocking in a dangerous cross that at least 2 players were in position to pounce on.

Last night’s overpassing, pussiness to stick a ball in the box and then passing back/giving the ball away in the box had me tearing my hair and my eyes out.

How can Bob after nearly 18 months not see that it just isn’t working?

The machine’s not the issue as long as you use it for what it does best. There’s no point hoping that a machine that’s designed for putting away widgets given to it from a similar machine is going to produce grommets all by itself.
