Yet another example of the sneery, glib, non-sensical, non-amusing remark that naffs people people off about the anti-Martinez brigade. Come up with some realistic alternative solutions to our current predicament and I’m sure there’ll be a reasoned debate. You may even find that we on the light side of the fence actually agree with many of your concerns. But we’ll never really know because you never seem interested in presenting them in a rational manner
….and there we have it Griff – but we (the lightside) are more concerned about how the club is, it’s condition and it’s future. I gave a personal analogy recently about our Maude….married for years but she has her faults (as do I) but I don’t continually harp on about them (nor does she)…..I can’t stand my daughters partner, but I’ve not disowned her – like Roberto says – big picture and look at the positives, however I don’t see that rational presentation coming our way any time soon.
Micky, in my opinion, the real problem we have on this site is there are many who judge all purely from what they see in and around ninety minutes of football.
I know all is not going well on the pitch, or we wouldn’t be in the position we are in. I am not, however, going to be drawn into the view that all things Wigan Athletic are bad at present, because, they’re not.
Martinez is currently being ridiculed for his signings, his choice of formation, his player selection, his substitutions, his style of play, his pre and post-match comments, his lack of a team talk, his perceived lack of emotion, his lack of ambition, his lack of discipline over the players, his lack of flexibility, a poor result for the Youth Team, a poor season for the Development Squad, and on occasion, his choice of vocabulary printed in the national media.
With so many faults, I don’t know how the man sleeps at night. His choice of shoes and scarf are so far unscathed, however, another couple of defeats could change that.
I am aware of what has been done behind the scenes at the club since Martinez took charge, and I’ll support the club with Martinez in charge. If someone wants to dispute what developments there have been within the club since Martinez took up the position, or the respective merits of those developments, then that’s their prerogative – and to be honest, I really can’t be bothered arguing the toss with them anymore.
I consider the development of young players and local talent, the club’s perception and standing in the local community, and the club’s financial stability as primary objectives, with success on the football field as secondary. (Ask the supporters of Darlington what they’d prefer)
Some may see that as the wrong attitude, but unless a club like Wigan is financially stable, and has the ability to produce its own players – with some of them being from the local community, success on the pitch is a bonus. Without a football club there would be nowhere for success to happen anyway.
Apart from cutting the wage bill which needed to be done I’m not seeing any progress from within the club at all. The first team is struggling the reserves are doing poorly and the youths got walloped 9-1 by Notts County. And before you come back with Rome wasn’t built in a day we already had a youth team before Bob arrived.
How long does he need as i don’t know of any other manager who would have got away with the results he has for nearly 3 seasons.
Hope we get him, think he will play well with Hugo in a front two

Mickyc we are all concerned about the club and it’s condition for the future which is why for me Bob must go. We have had very few positives in nearly 3 seasons and looking at the bigger picture we are in a worse position than when Bob arrived. I just don’t see how you can still think Bob is the man for the job and as you do could you answer these questions.
If the club has no money we have to sign bargain basement players how can these be expected to play Bob’s passing style???
If a team is struggling for goals why continually play with one striker???
Who at the club thinks Gohouri and Caldwell are footballers???
Why play the same boring passing for passings sake style when it’s obvious it doesn’t work with the players we have???
If Bob is building a squad which he claims is the best we have ever had are we bottom of the league and can’t beat Swindon in the cup???
Why buy players then never play them???
And the last one how long do we give Bob to turn things around???
Ah but Griff,Jewell is a far better manager than Martinez.(he was a better player too)
Jewell got lucky as a manager and we got lucky as supporters
Dave Whelan bankrolled our much sought after promotion from the 3rd division (now league 1) and our very much unexpected and very premature promotion from the Championship to the Premier League
Jewell’s true credentials have been found out since leaving Wigan
Hard to think of any realistic managerial options who would be able to do much better for us than Martinez will next season whichever division we are in
I would be hard pressed to think of anyone who would do a worse job.
I have no doubt that part of Bob’s remit when he took the managers job was to get the wage bill down. Common sense tells you that if you can only sign poor quality players it’s impossible to get them playing like Barcelona. Arsenal play that way with top quality players and they don’t win things so what chance do little Wigan have????
Im of the view lately that Mr whelan has just left us stranded in the premierleague. floating like a dead fish.If Martinez was manager at the birth of our premierleague days when money was being injected into wages and transfer fee’s i think we’d be in a much better position. I think Martinez is by far the best manager we have had in the premier league.
Our future looks very very bleak. we cannot expect to continue in the premierleague acting like a divison 2/3 out fit. buying lower rate players unfortunately isnt working for us. we could have wenger, ferguson, or mourinho and under our chairman not one of them could keep us up know
being forced to make cutback after cutback, im not sure how the manager is supposed to compete in the premierleague.
Jewell was given money on wages and transfers, yet still managed to play dog awaful football. Bruce was worse. Martinez is giving us a fighting chance with both our arms cut off and and gangrenous leg.
Roberto has had no money and no way of atttracting any player with an ounce of talent.
not sure where we go from here……….
Steve Bruce was by far our best Premiership manager, bar Whelan selling a team from underneath him we would have played in Europe.
Not seen enough of the lad and therefore don’t know if he is an out and out winger or someone who can play more centrally (in place of Gomez, maybe?) or even as a sriker??? If he is just another wide player then it does seem a bit of strange one. Unless he has a really good mate who goes everywhere with him who can play centre-half
Fingers crossed.
Unbelievable, about the only position in the team we are reasonably strong with Moses, Crusat, Mcmanaman & Maloney, plus Hugo can play there. Can’t remember him being too hot at Birmingham either
We will need him for the FA/Carling cup games we can have a look at him then if he signs
But he will be told not to try to hard as we don’t care about cup competions
:evil:we are losing fans now, poor turn out against city for example, i think the way fans are protesting is by staying away, i know a few season ticket holders who refuse to go whilst martinez is in charge, not my stance by the wayI still go with my season ticket but I have to admit it’s not very enjoyable and you can’t really blame those who don’t.
GO
I think you will find most people on here do actually go to the games. I know I do which is why I can say hand on heart Bob has to go.
You were posting hugo hugo hugo yesterday when it went to 2-1
I suppose you did it from your phone at the game
I’ve done all the travelling in years gone by even under Kenny Swain I used to go with my Dad home and away and used to enjoy it even though we were shit. But things change and now I don’t go to more than a few away games. If you went on Saturday fair play to you because under Bob I find it difficult to go to the DW with a season ticket.
I speak regularly to around 20 latics fans (who actually attend games) and all are happy with him at the helm.
A very important point Royston. Far too many internet fans get their expert opinions from live feeds and radio commentary. I`d much rather listen to the ones who make the effort to go to games rather than people who get hysterical while sat in the comfort of their armchair
Swindon, Notts County bad results yeah for sure. 9 changes from the normal starting 11 tho wasn’t it for the Swindon game?As for Crystal palace & Blackpool, don’t make me laugh, what gives us the god given right to be beating these teams. Is this the same Crystal Palace team that knocked Manchester United out of the cup?
And Blackpool beat Liverpool home and away last season?
Please correct me if i am wrong. Please think before you post tripe fella.Nedber I’m correcting you because from what you’ve posted you talk utter bollocks. How you can defend Bob after the last 3 seasons is beyond me. Do you actually go to games??? because if you do and you still think he’s doing a good job you no nothing about football
Regarding Paul Jewell’s appointment i would say yes that was his remit, without a doubt. It’s called ambition. What do you think he said to him?
Roberto is not “a joke”. I seem to remember his doing a splendid job down at swansea. Was he not also the first manager to turn over a so called “big four” club?? He has his faults, yes. He also has his qualities.
If you are so keen on getting rid, please post a list of potential replacements who, first of all would take the Wigan job and secondly work within the restraints of the club.
This i am looking forward to.
Firstly at this level of management Roberto has definately proved himself to be a joke. Piss poor signings shit tactics no plan B no idea how to influence a game with substitutions and post match interviews were he rolls out the same pathetic lame excuses. Secondly Not sure what wages Bob earns but I bet after turning down Villa and signing a new contract he will be on a good screw. I would imagine there are a few managers out there who would take the job as for a few more months we are a Premiership club. And how would you or I ever know who would take the job??? we can only speculate because you don’t know unless you ask.
Right. This is the solution.
It is getting quite boring on here with multiple threads ranting and raving about Martinez, Whelan etc etc etc out.
It’s easy, nail your colours to the mast instead of hiding behind your gay computer screens.
Do as they do in Spain, if you are not happy with the regeime take your white hankerchief to the game and wave it above your head. SIMPLE.
It will be interesting to see how many “fans” bottle it.
For the record i can see no reason to get rid at this stage, what will be will be as disapointed as i am with the whole situation.
Keep the faith.Last time i saw white hankys on heads was when we played P.N.E at springy and it kicked off big time on the st.andrews side
Do people still carry hankys??? and if so I hope they don’t start waving them near me it’s flue season
