It’s funny how people keep saying Whelan is making a profit out of these transfers. Yes we sell for more than we buy for but do you think these players play for us for free? There’s the not insubstantial wages to pay you know!
To be honest I’d rather see Whelan selling players (like we always did to survive pre-Whelan) and trying to balance the books than to bring in some foreign owner, run up a load of debt and then go bust when they get bored.
People say we’ll miss out on a load of money if we go down, I don’t see it that way – being in the Premier League is starting to cost us (and every other club) big time. We’d probably be more financially secure in the Championship paying smaller wages to genuine footballers, not the mercenaries populating the Prem.
What the hell has the level Jones played at got to do with his coaching ability? He may well be a crap coach, I really don’t know as I don’t work for him, do you?
Why do people think that someone needs to have been a world class player to be a good coach / manager? Was Wenger any good as a player?Funny how it’s only England that were tired after the Premier League season – don’t half the players at the World Cup play over here?
Sunderland seem to!
Why do you think it makes any difference if his trailing foot left the floor? The tackle was clearly one footed, not two. If the argument is that he wasn’t in control because both feet were off the floor then any player who ever makes a sliding tackle should be sent off. From the moment a player begins to slide he has no control over his movement, the trailing foot being off the floor makes no difference in this.
“He wanted to go in the summer” – what exactly are you basing that on?
At the fans forum Bob stated that an offer had come in from you-know-who in summer but Maynor said he wanted to stay and repay Wigan for giving him his chance. Hardly sounds like he wanted away does it?It’s only 3 games if it’s for violent conduct (possibly if 2nd or 3rd red of the season too). Straight red for a professional foul is 1 game.
If a player wants to go AND we get a good price then yes he should be sold. However, I think on general principle we should tell Bruce that he wont be getting any more of our players. If Maynor does indeed want to leave then fair enough, he just wont be going to Sunderland.
Fair play to Martinez for being so sporting and reducing us to 10 men too.
Jo-Burg is notoriously bad, I wouldn’t go there if you paid me, but much of the rest of the country is fine. Like anywhere else really, if you’re silly you’ll end up in bother, if you’re sensible with where you go it’s a great place. I was over there for a number of months and loved it.
Well I’m glad it’s not just me feeling that way then!
To be fair this isn’t really much to do with our current situation, been feeling like this for a few years. The Prem is now ridiculous – there are 12 clubs in it who may as well just not bother, the other 8 can scrap it out for the available Euro spots and no-one really cares who wins the title just finish in the top 4 is all that counts these days. For all the frustration with us selling our best players (a throwback to the pre-Whelan days for those that remember) what else are we supposed to do? We have to try and operate like a business, it’s the only way we can stay in existence. There is no way we could possibly break into the top 8 this season even if we’d kept everyone we’ve let go the last couple of years. Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Villa & Spurs have way too much money available for anyone else to compete and Everton are fortunate that they already have a good squad and top manager.
We are not going to be taken over by some foreign billionaire and, even if we did, with so many now in the game it’s still no guarantee of even getting into the Europa League.Sorry Scholes but yes I was there (although I’m sure another 8000 or so will also claim that ;) ). My one and only season of going to every home and away match was the season we went down, so I remember it quite well.
Yes of course, the club on the edge of bankruptcy (again) inflated the crowd so we could pay more tax……
True but I think you’ll find there were a few more than 1200 on when we played Plymouth.
