So, before the EU came about we competed with Germany

It’s not difficult to compete for 30 years with a country crippled by its own war, paying reparations and trying to rebuild itself. And while it was rebuilding we rested on our laurels thinking we were cock of the world, got caught up by them and Japan, got overtaken and then took apart our manufacturing industry cos we couldn’t compete any more. Nout to do with us joining the EU and leaving won’t make it any better unless we rebuild like they did.
I never implied it was anything to do with joining the EU that was the problem Galactic? I was pointing out that since the referendum UK manufacturing has benefitted, mainly due to the weakened pound.

Nail on the head, oh please.

Can’t you learn to look b a future beyond capitalism? It’s a busted flush. It’s failing now to make us all more wealthy. Marx predicted this over 100 years ago, and politicians on all sides agree he was most often proved right.

In 20 years’ time, the driverless car will make redundant just about every bus, taxi, train, coach and delivery driver. Nanotechnology will put even surgeons’ jobs at risk. 3D printing will decimate manufacturing.

There simply will not be enough jobs to go around. Governments will have to pay us a basic human income just to keep the whole capitalist multiplier going. With more job-sharing and part-time work on the agenda, the benefits of leisure time, creative pursuits and doing things for our communities will become apparent.

We need to take back our infrastructure, create proper jobs and apprenticeships, rejuvenate our social housing stock and then plan for this shared future. Or we can sleepwalk into being a zero-hours, low-tax, small-state economy, desperately attempting to compete with the might of Germany, with financial services our only major industry.
Forget France, we should be taking our lead from Scandinavia, and forget the delusion of being a major nuclear power while we’re at it.

As for wearing a poppy, it’s a free country. Of course I respect the efforts put in by our forefathers. But they didn’t die for us to be a one-party monoculture, rather a free democracy that looked after us from cradle to grave. Someone should remind Kensington council of that.

Forget France? But their recent political decisions are the very same political theories that Labour are promising the young generation of Britain… The last Labour government made a hash of things and this mon could well bankrupt the UK in 10yrs with his give away manifesto.

Your above theory could happen if businesses are allowed to keep influencing politics. This wave of “nationalism is dangerous” rhetoric comes from politicians & business leaders who are all out for their own. It is these arse h**** that are the problem.

And by the way, our manufacturing sector is doing very well of late. Which in turn creates jobs. So, before the EU came about we competed with Germany, and will do in the future if we ever leave the EU that is.

This thread has gone from a Wigan flag at Glastonbury to a political preference 

For those Corbyn lovers, you only have to look at France’s economy for what will lie ahead for us if Labour get’s in. Corbyn’s policies are very similar to that of France. Tax the rich, tax the corporate lot & give more to the poor.

France currently has the weakest economy of the big three in Europe, one of the poorest growth forecasts for 2017 for the whole of the EU predicted, larger than average EU unemployment rate & even worse (24%) for the youth.

Government debt, now stands at almost 90% of GDP, up from just 58% a decade ago.

Be careful what you vote for..

Let’s hope Man Utd don’t come knocking again then. Hope our new gaffer treats these friendly’s as a proper work out for first team rather than a work out for most of the squad.

David Sharpe is expecting a few more ‘ins-and-outs’ before Wigan Athletic’s squad is ready for next season. With the new fixtures released on Wednesday – and the players back in for pre-season training this weekend – the appetite has already being whetted. And Sharpe says plenty of hard work is going on behind the scenes to ensure new boss Paul Cook has a squad ready to compete for an automatic return to the Championship. “There’s going to be a couple of changes before the start of the season,” Sharpe confirmed. “There’ll be a couple of players hopefully coming in, and maybe a couple of players leaving.“We’re actively talking with clubs, and different things are popping up every day.”Sharpe also underlined his belief Latics will be in the promotion shake-up.“Every club in League One is looking at promotion, and that has to be our aim,” he added on Radio Manchester. “There’s no point looking at it differently – everyone is in it to win it. We’ve got to use our experience of last time in League One, we know what it takes as does the manager.“But there’s some good teams in there. It’ll be tough.”

Well let’s hope it is only a couple and not the stupid amounts we’ve seen in previous seasons…
disappointment of last season fading and quite looking forward to this next one..

Doesn’t have quite the same excitement in League 1 does it?

Disappointed we’re away both first and last days of the season (it’s usually one or the other).

At least we’ve a home game on Boxing Day (if it doesn’t get rained off like 2 years ago).

Home against Portsmouth 26th August may get moved ;) . Apart from that there won’t be many other changes unless we get to the 3rd round of the Cup…

Oh well, roll on 5th August…be here soon enough. Anyone heard how ST sales are going?

You’re right Leyland not many stand out matches…. Blackpool away is a Saturday

I’m sure Hart only had two things to do in that second half & he royally messed both up… Definitely time for another keeper to be given a go.

Only saw the second half and it was like watching Sunday league stuff, as far as quality goes anyway. England are poor and play with no idea, pass pass pass pass pass….. with no end product.

Scotland were even worse, two great free kicks and that was it from them. Russia will be the same old same old with Southgate in charge.

he was on loan at oxford last season, scored a few for them, may be a good squad player for us, maybe if Flores doesn’t sign he would do as a replacent for him. I reckon Flores will sign for Blackpool.

Don’t think he’d sign for Blackpool anyway after what they did to him just before play off game? Sending him back to Wigan so he couldn’t play was a tad harsh.

Thought we’d signed an Indian tribe, but it was Chey Dunkley. Young upcoming defender, does that mean he is one for the bench?

He’ll be a starter. Highly rated.
By who?, some fans reckon he’s not the best ball player more of a straight forward get rid defender. To be highly rated you need both attributes
Say’s who?

A defender’s job is to defend. If you can play the ball out – then it’s bonus.

Dan Burn came with the reputation of being a liability and a hoof-merchant at Fulham, and that didn’t turn out too badly did it?

Forget what some of the Oxford fans are saying about him. That’s what fans do when a player leaves your club for one of your league rivals.

He was linked to Birmingham and Forest before we signed him, and this lad seems to rate him:

“corners lead to goals, something largely been missing from our game for nearly two decades”.

I think we can relate to this quote from that article.. All’s we need now is someone who can deliver a corner kick..

Make it law that anyone who commits an act of terrorism subjects his or her own family to incarceration for life. Bollocks to human rights for them bollocks to its not fair you destroy a life you destroy your own family as well.

On wat planet would that work? “Hi mr and mrs bloggs. Your childs a muppet so we are going to jail you for life. We dont care about the shop you own or surgery you work in. Look after your kids better. Yes the family whose son killed someone last week are allowed to be free because they arent muslims”
I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that the Israel’s operate like that? I’m pretty sure they even used to flatten the house of said suspect’s family.

She will always put her party before the people of Wigan, that’s why she was a remainer and the vast majority of her constituents wanted out. She did what her party wanted not what the people of Wigan wanted!

She had one vote, like you and I and she voted the same way as 48% of the voters did. Since then, she has accepted the result, voted to trigger Article 50 and her party is committed to leaving the EU.

Unlike Cameron who quit and the Lib Dems who wont let it go, she is now representing the views of the majority of her constituents by working towards a satisfactory exit from the EU.
Irrespective of what Nandy votes for, she knows that labour will never fully leave the EU, as that is not what Corbyn wants. He’s already stated the first thing he will do if he wins is fly over to Germany to strike a deal with Merkel.
They are happy to keep the Schengen area & EU laws which is tantamount to staying put..

Personally as few as possible but who knows. Obvious ones that will leave are the long term loaned out players from last season. Hopefully we won’t be selling the likes of Grigg, Burn, Powell etc. I hope we have a small squad fighting to get a game. Do we really need to bring any players in? All have been brought in to play the type of game Cook plays so no need for them to adapt. Two strikers is ample as only one will be playing and providing none are injured. As little disruption as possible should see us ok. Paul as inherited a squad that should fly up the league. They just need managing.
All that said, this is Latics so it will be more likely ten out and ten in and a practice ground for half a dozen loanees whose heart and minds lie elsewhere.

Hope we don’t see the usual amount of ins & outs Donny. Stability would be nice, for once in a long time!

Something needs to be done & quickly. The punishment for these terrorists is nonexistent, there is no deterrent for them.

Heard some chap speaking on the radio last year who was from the security services (can’t remember which) and he eluded to a number of Islamic fundamentalist “suspects” that was in the thousands!! Radio commentator asked him to clarify that figure but he wouldn’t as he didn’t want to “scare the public”!! If they are a suspect then the security forces need to allowed to ship the lot of them back to their respective countries before they kill anymore innocent people!
