I always think that a forward should take them, their forte is or should be scoring goals. I was screaming for Delort to take that at Blackburn. Get him off the mark and get his confidence right from day 1. No pro should miss from 12 yards but when you see our players practicing the one two and shoot in the pre game warm up, the strike rate is about 15%.
But there are plenty of defenders who regularly take/took penalties:
Leighton Baines, Julian Dicks, Phil Neal, Dennis Irwin, Graham Alexander, Ian Harte etc.
Strikers usually don’t have time to think before shooting, so I think it’s just a matter of confidence as most professional players have enough skill to walk up and kick a ball from twelve yards into the part of the goal they intend it to go into.[/quote
All I’ll say on this matter is that if one of our players is running in on goal with just the keeper to beat, I would sooner it be Riera, Delort or Fortune rather than Barnett, Boyce or KIernan.

What a journey! He can pick and chose when he wants to go to whatever game he feels like going to. What has it got to do with any of you lot, or your opinions of how good a supporter he is? You don’t have to attend matches to be a fan. There is no code book or set’s of rules as to qualify as a supporter. Fucking hilarious some of these posts. He has a voice and has a right to air his views like everyone else whether he goes or not.Wigan Athletic fans club mafia on here, some more than others. If you have a different opinion you are a rugby, Man Utd or Liverpool fan. Some of you need to take your heads out of the sand and try to use your averagely small brains to to realize that you are just another person with an opinion and barracking, bullying and name calling just confirms that. The ones that think their opinion is more valid than others resort to these 3 things, a few in particular and just confirms that you are insecure and cowardly.
I sorta agree with you Yosser, but if you want to make public statements on a forum mainly frequented by staunch latics fans, that you have stopped watching the tics because they are not playing well, expect to get some stick from the die hards. Particularly if you also bring the chubsters into the equation. It certainly ruffled my feathers up, so much so I felt the need to respond.
I would never think of trying to be a cyber bully, like some posters on here get the kicks from being, but by the same token I will defend my principles and speak my mind thank you very much. From Matlock to ManU
What a journey! Its about time the players showed they cared
3 crucial games against 3 teams below us coming up.
Today was a fine win, no doubt about that. However one win doesn’t cast aside all the recent problems. We need to kick on from here and win at least 2 of these next 3 to really start moving up the table and prove today was not a flash in the pan.
Fulham are running nicely into form so next Saturday will be a very good indicator of where we really are. The players will hopefully take confidence from today, whether they will be playing next week or not :cheer:
I think beating the top team in this division might be a better indicator as to where we are as a team. The players are there, Uwe just needs to pick um. The midfield today was awesome, ignore what the brolly man said, his team wasn’t poor, they were made tom look poor by a very good Wigan team. I have never seen us win as many seconds in a game.

What a journey!Could be some Derby déjà vu at weekend! If we get another battering off them I feel that it will set the wheels in motion for a little meeting in the office Sunday or Monday morning! If we just get beat by the odd goal then maybe just a final warning, mentioning that the next 3 games on paper are very winnable and anything less than 6 points is not good enough! By the way, how are you guys who commented on this thread earlier feeling now? The same? I reckon we could be languishing worse than 16th after 15 games eh ‘jrfatfan’!!
What I said at the time was bang on, things have obviously changed since and consequently my opinions have changed. You can only comment on how things are at that moment in time, hindsight is a wonderful thing.
I don’t feel embarrassed about saying those things, but apparently if we beat Derby on Saturday and go on a 8 game winning streak, you will be. :P
I’ll be over the Moon not embarrassed! What a ridiculous thing to come out with! I was merely pointing out that my concerns were and still are warranted! I was asking whether the ones who thought I was being too negative back then still thought the same/ had the same opinions as they wrote! Anyone thinking I am having a go is way off the mark, I am just asking the question as well as adding what I think may happen anon!
What a journey!5 or 6 competitive games a season is not my idea of VFM. I know lads who are warriors season ticket holders, but miss several home games because they will be over with after 15-20 mins.
I’ll admit I hate those type of games but no matter how bored I am at these I’ve never been as bored as I was on Saturday and Tuesday. The fact that I don’t recall the only “highlight” shown on Sky Sports from the Brentford game has led me to believe that I did indeed fall asleep.
Games against the lower sides in rugby league at least normally have the odd full length try or cracking team try to wake you up. Saturday and Tuesday had fuck all.
I’m not turning this into a rugby v football debate because there’s no point, but I’m pretty sure I’d have had more enjoyment from a chess match than our last two games at home and that is the problem that we have at the minute. We have next to no creativity whatsoever.
You just have!
I was sat there at all our recent draws, hoping and praying we would nab a winner, whilst at the same time hoping even more, that they wouldn’t do us late on.
How the hell can you say that if your team is winning by 40 points you are sat at the edge of your seat hoping you might see a full length of field try. I’m sorry Egg but your comparison is nothing short of a big load of horse dung.

What a journey!Griff, I don’t claim to be a top supporter who never misses. Like I said I have always followed both teams. But in my opinion it’s a two way street. You pay to watch and be entertained and judging by the gates there are several thousand fans who are doing the same. For what it’s worth I actually gave up my season ticket three years ago when we were still in the prem. As for the punches at old trafford yes it was a truly disgusting act which ruined a great day, paying 120 quid for three tickets I felt cheated to be honest but it doesn’t just happen in rugby. I was at DW when macmanaman nearly knee capped the Newcastle player, when Duncan Ferguson punched scharner, when lee mculloch smashed Chris Morgan in the face and at Springfield park when Graeme Jones butted an opposition player! But these players who got took out at the knee, was punched in the stomach, was head butted, were they lying prostrate on the ground and defenceless when they took the hit?
Don’t try and compare it to those football incidents, this was by far the worst thing that has happened live on TV in any professional game in this country.
It’s also not uncommon to see rugby league players banging hell out of one another week in week out, whatever turns you on as a fan I suppose.
Rugby Union players take far more shots during play, but just get on with it, yes the odd skirmish happens, but they soon kiss and make up.Anyway, carry on watching your beloved rugby team, although I suppose you’ll be back watching the tics if they start winning games, you might even get a cheap half season ticket offer.
Keep bobbing back on this forum and we’ll let you know when they hit some form.

What a journey!Totally agree with the lack of quality on show and unfortunately it is starting to turn supporters away. I have always supported both the latics and the warriors but always attended far more latics games. However now I find myself enjoying the rugby far more and so does my daughter, so we now attend the rugby more as we feel we get far more value for money entertainment. Went to Old Trafford for the grand final the other week and spoke to quite a few other supporters (Both Wigan and St Helens) who were doing the same. But I don’t suppose the overpaid latics lot will give two hoots about the decline in support!!Did your daughter enjoy that defenceless, prostrate player getting whacked by the big lazoom? Bet it was something for her and her mates to talk about in the playground or over a glass of wine.

Value for money?, 5 or 6 competitive games a season is not my idea of VFM. I know lads who are warriors season ticket holders, but miss several home games because they will be over with after 15-20 mins.

What a journey!needs to act swiftly to arrest this situation. The table doesn’t lie.Poor signings ,poor team selections and seems to have completely run out of idea’s.I don’t like the knee jerk ousting of managers but I have nil confidence that he has the management nous to put things right.4 strikers and to me the more capable of the 4 can’t get a smell in ……According to quite a few on here, we have to give Rosler more time to change things around, its a transitional period we are going through, they say.

It’s a bit like that cash out betting milarky to me, the longer you wait the more nervy it gets and you could end up losing all. I admit to sitting in the Springy stand on Saturday pressing my cash out button. Nothing changed last night to make me change my mind. I like most, thought Rosler was going to do big things here at Wigan, but it just isn’t happening.
It may seem a daft thing to say but in my opinion,we have too many players. There needs to be a nucleus of about 9 or 10 players who are the backbone of the team and are given time to gel. He also needs to select his favoured formation and stick with that. Every game seems to be a suck it and see job and its gone on too long.
Was surprised and happy to see Figs back, but on reflection, he has just compounded the situation.

What a journey!Just thought this deserved an bump after the 3-0 win today for Bobbies boys
Well done to Mr Martinez and even more well done to you for waiting for this win today. Still bottom half of the table, even though it’s a pretty shit Premiership this season. Chelsea will win it by a country mile and our ex manager will not get his magnificent team into the Champs league again. Are you listening Mrkenwrong?
Eh? What on earth are you going on about? In what way? Here’s a scenario: imagine it’s summer 2013, and Martinez has just announced that he’s going to reject the approach from Everton, and stay on as the manager and try to get Wigan back into the Premier League.
Would you have been happy with this news?
No right or wrong answer. I’m just interested to know.
Yes I would have been happy with that, its the only reason I am miffed at him. He could have given it one shot and then buggered off, no matter what the outcome had been. OK, you might say he would have been stupid to turn that offer down, but I firmly believe he did turn Villa and Liverpool down, so why not Everton?. I also wasn’t chuffed him coming back for McCarthy, Kone and OOC Alcaraz. It was a bit like what that Flowers geezer did to the Saints player, only without the physicality.
Anyway thanks Standish for at least engaging in some discussion on this. Your bosom buddy just seems to haul personal insults if I have a go at “our Bobby”.
