Go. At this point, we have to assume we are going down, So the question becomes, is Joyce the right man to bring us back up? I just don’t think I’ve seen any evidence of that. In order for me to vote to keep Joyce, I’d have to be of the opinion that: 1) Our league position is more due to a lack of talent than management, and 2) Joyce’s predecessor/ownership is more to blame for that lack of talent than he is – essentially, that you have confidence in Joyce making transfer decisions this summer. Do we really want him at the helm for the decisions this summer, or are we better admitting the mistake and moving on – giving a new manager some competitive matches to judge what he has before the next transfer window? As much as the frequent turnover of managers (and players) does concern me, Joyce’s record & the team’s offensive performance has been so dismal, that I don’t think he can just turn it around/get the players confidence just by moving to League 1.

I will say this – part of our problem has been the whole sale roster changes. Maybe I’m mistaken; but, other teams who have been successful moving up (or after moving down) haven’t turned their roster over to the degree that we have. If you’re moving up a level, that should indicate that a certain number of the players who helped you do that are ready for the next level. I think the roster turnover is an indictment of our scouting and player evaluation over the past 4 years.

I think we must remember that the vast majority of football managers are not highly educated men

This. This runs across all sports. These guys may be good people; but, a lot of them are really utter morons/cavemen who have very little business being in the positions that they are in, and are only there because of reputation/notoriety gained through their playing days. In theory the coaching badges/credentialing should help minimize this; but, how much do they really prove (with enough time/prep, I would guess anyone can get these, just like prepping for any professional or university entrance exams). They get the positions based on past playing days/rep, and the thought that they may have some man management/leadership qualities that are a bit more intangible – not for their speaking qualities or overall intelligence. Tactically, probably 80% of these guys aren’t any better than an average person pulled off the street with no knowledge of the game would be if you gave them 1 year to study/learn the game (again, true of most sports, not just football).

……… very long tunnel. Can any one see any light yet??

Yes. Unfortunately, that light is the headlight of a train (League One) heading right at us.

I’d give Caldwell two more games. If we don’t see results vs Cardiff and/or Reading (4 points), I’d make the change.

That would allow some extra time for the new gaffer during the international break vs having to take over when the fixtures start coming more frequently during the holidays. Also gives the new manager a good length of time to get a feel for what he has before the January transfer window.

So, has anyone seen him play? Any thoughts? I was kind of hoping to see Nichols as the #1…it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I’d have to put Koumas near the top.
Big transfer fee, big wages (for us), little Impact and took an age to get him off the wage bill.

Agreed. People seem to be judging the Strikers more harshly. I suppose that’s fair, since they are in the spotlight; But, for me, Koumas and Kapo are easily #’s 1 and 2 – huge fees, and did nothing.

What did we pay for Forshaw? Seems to be conflicting info on the internet.

My third would be either Rierea, Forshaw, Boselli or Aghahowa.

Buttercup. words show concern, but doesn’t have to be depressing (Don’t break my heart!!!) Somewhat fitting, and fun for the fans, as demonstrated by my alma mater:

in reply to: Roger Espinoza: A retraction #136121

The thing is, Espinoza’s not really a creative player – his best position is as a defensive or holding midfielder, and his value comes from his flexibility (able to play left back, other midfield positions if necessary) and that he does the dirty work (or running around like a chicken) that allows the creative midfielders to get forward and not have to worry about tracking back as much – as let’s face it, the Mc’s and even Maloney don’t really do.

That’s why I’d always at least have him as a sub, if not starting. I’m not sure he’s always been played in his best position precisely because of his flexibility (& I think that flexibility is why Martinez brought him on). Last year, I would have always paired him & Gomez together, as I think they would have been excellent complements for each other – Gomez with the technical ability & creativity, and Espinoza with the energy & ball winning skills to help cover for Gomez’s defects.

Admittedly, I am an Espinoza fan from watching him play here in the US and in CONCACAF qualifying. That said, I think you can definitely make the argument that there are 11 players on this team that are individually better than him. However, it’s not about how good all the individuals are, it’s about piecing together the 11 who will work best together – and that’s where I think there’s a place for Roger in the lineup.

    Forgot the link:

I think Honduras will win a game or two in this year’s world cup. They had some key injuries 4 years ago that really hurt them.

in reply to: Espinozas mate could be worth a look #131713

Anderlecht won’t sell Najar (according to article below, Tottentham and Valencia are interested), and Wigan probably can’t afford him anyway. It’s rumored that Anderlecht bought him from DC United for between 2 and 3 million. He’ll cost at least that much and probably more now.

But yeah, he’d be nice to have.

in reply to: Beausojeur keeps the bench warm AGAIN! #124125

As I’m over in the States, I was able to see Espinoza play several times for both Kansas City and Honduras in CONCACAF before he transferred to Wigan, and I’ve always been a fan. No, he wouldn’t be a savior for Wigan, nor is he the type who’s even going to score much; but, he would definitely help Wigan retain more possession than they have been, & I really thought we’d see more of him. In particular, I think that his style would complement Gomez well & make for a nice midfield pairing (Gomez with the creativity, and Espinoza the industry & ability to win back possession).

I certainly expected to see Beausojeur and Espinoza a lot more than we have this year. And honestly, for me, outside of Maloney, if healthy Gomez would be the first name on the team sheet every week. We’ve seen a lot of Gomez; but even he doesn’t seem to be the automatic that I had expected (given his proven record in the Championship). It’s probably just coincidence (or maybe preferred style); but, I’m almost starting to wonder if Coyle has something against latin american and/or spanish players.

No Gomez Boyce or Espinoza. Gomez &Boyce can be squad rotation but that’s a couple in a row now without Espinoza…

in reply to: COYLE CONFIRMED #116228

I’ll feel better about this if Coyle can convince Stuart Holden to sign with Wigan instead of Bolton after this round of International’s ends.

in reply to: Premature but who would your next manager be ? #113036

Is Everton really a big step up for Bobby though? If we get relegated, maybe. But, Moyes hasn’t been backed with finances at Everton – & without Moyes, I can see Everton in a relegation scrap next year. Would Bobby really want to go from one club always in that battle to another one that seems likely to be?

Gotta figure that Moyes takes at least one, maybe two of Everton’s better players with him (maybe Baines finally makes the move to Utd?). Also that they lose Fellaini. Probably only get whatever funds they generate to go get replacements. Is that really attractive?

It’s too bad. If We can somehow manage to stay up, I could see Everton getting relegated next year – & if we would then stay up again, that could be the beginning of picking up more fans with Everton, Blackburn and Bolton all in the championship.

and Espinoza did the same, within 5 minutes of coming onto the field he did more chasing and tackling than Gomez has done throughout the whole game.

Gomez isn’t really that type of player; whereas, Espinoza is. I’d actually like to see these two paired together in midfield, as I think each provides what the other lacks, & they could make for a nice tandem – Gomez the creativity & possesion going forward, and Espinoza the energy & defensive cover. I Think that would be worth the try, especially with the congestion & need to rotate players in the next few games.
