Those looking to renew have just under two weeks to decide if they want to take up the cheapest option. If at that point the situation is still unclear regarding the intentions of the owner then I would certainly think it unwise to renew unless you are willing to risk kissing goodbye to £300/£400. In the grand scheme of things I seriously doubt any season tickets sales are likely to be enough to guarantee the viability of the club.
It’s unlikely that funds for any season ticket sales collected/paid by credit card are actually going to the club. It is standard for credit card processors to have stipulations in their merchant agreements that allow them to withhold funds if they suspect financial risk or potential fraud – especially for ‘high risk’ transactions such as a season ticket sale where you are paying a large amount up front for future delivery of services. They constantly monitor their merchants financials/news, and would be aware of the missing wage payments, and that would likely trigger temporarily withholding the payments for these transactions to cover any potential future losses from the cardholders being denied services.
So, in that respect: you don’t have to be as worried about losing your money if you do purchase the season tickets (funds are likely being held for potential refund by the credit card processor); but, on the other hand, don’t purchase now just because you think it will help get funds to the club (It likely won’t). My guess is that likely had something to do with the season ticket program getting delayed/not being available last week (since the club isn’t likely going to get those funds, or at least not a good portion of them).
Butter it up all you want but Maloney must start planning for league 1. Keane,Fletcher, Lang won’t get us goals…..Power has Zero creativity. Our quality of crossing is as bad as I’ve ever seen. F###### Ibrahimovic would get goals here. What did we actually produce in the 1st half against as poor a side well play ???
Burnley’s so far in front, they are vitally guaranteed promotion and it’s possible we benefit from them heavily rotating the squad against us/trying to concentrate on a cup run. Unfortunately, it looks like their schedule sets up as Wednesday FA cup, Sat Blackpool, and then Saturday us, before another game Wednesday. So Blackpool might reap more of that benefit, or maybe we both face Burnley lineups at partial strength. Really, if I’m Burnley, I don’t want to drop points; but, if I do, it might as well be to a bottom club vs a top 10 club.
I think we need @ 3 premium young/up and coming loan signings in to have a chance to stay up – of quality similar to the Jedi and Reece James loans of the past. Much easier said than done.
I think there’s a strong chance it’s a threat/negotiating ploy by these large clubs in order to get greater %’s of revenues/rules in their favor. The domestic leagues need to hold firm – no reason to give in to them or make any special allowances for these teams.
If they do pull away/start this EFL in place of the champions leagues, even if the FA’s can’t ban them from competing domestically outright, they can certainly make life extremely difficult for them via scheduling/etc. These “big” teams need their domestic leagues – without them, their fan bases will shrink as they won’t be successful consistently when up against other ‘super’ teams.
They ensured we werent taken over by a bunch if idiots
We hope. In fairness, it will be several years before we have the verdict on this.
The sale price was well over £3m at the start. Sadly we’ve been pillaged to the point where there’s nothing left.
They wanted to liquidate us don’t forget.
I don’t believe they ever lost the 40 mill. I just think it was laundered from one company to the other and the liquidation of the club was their way of removing the evidence. This is probably what happened.
I would love to see a thorough investigation/facts come to light; but, I think everything will be swept under the run like nothing happened (seems like great material for some young investigator/documentary film-maker).
The big clubs have too much influence over the EFL, and ultimately, they want far less teams – enabling them to have bigger market shares and make more money & keep themselves secure. I think they really don’t want any more than the 4 big clubs in the Manchester/Liverpool area (maybe keep Blackburn at a lower level for traditional purposes since they’ve won the EPL). They’ve love to see Wigan go the way of Bury (and probably want Blackpool/Preston & others to go also, thinking they can pick up that fan base). The big clubs would love to see half the EFL clubs go under, and be able to cement market share for clubs in different regions – say the EPS made up of 4 Manchester/Liverpool clubs, 4 London, a couple of south coast, midlands, northern, Leeds, Sheffield, and whatever to fill it out, with a few other remainders in the 2nd tier.
Let’s hope the light at the end of the tunnel is not a fire.
Or a train coming in the other direction.
Sheridan was a poor appointment but probably all we could really go with. It was him or Grayson apparently.
Wouldn’t this have been (and isn’t it still) the ideal situation to take a risk and give a young first time manager a shot? Surely there had to other options out there. I would think someone looking for their first time in charge would jump at the chance. If you are successful, can move on quickly/build a reputation, and if not, could have just blamed the situation.
I would have much rather they gone in that direction than going with an mediocre (at best) retread.
Considering the assets that have been sold in front of their eyes while they’re negotiating a takeover the americans should be be given everything left for that price.
Agree.
If this is turned down, and the worst case scenario ensues, I would be willing to contribute to a new crowdfunder solely for the purposes of funding top notch legal experts to look into the EFL, administrators, and everything else.
If it comes to liquidation, could the fund be used to hire legal representation to look into the admin and/or others for malfeasance?
I don’t know how english law works, or how the administrator is assigned/who he owes fiduciary responsibility to; but, I think it’s fair to question. I know in the US, the mere threat of being sued can keep people in line, as even if they don’t think the lawsuit will be successful, they want to avoid the discovery process, were they have to often make all private documents/records available to all parties, and don’t want unflattering facts to come to light.
I’d love to see the unfiltered finance records/transactions and confirm if the admin is really performing their duties honestly/in the best interests of all parties or if any anterior motives are in play (in the case of either the admin or EFL). Sunshine/Light is always the best disinfectant, and such action may be the only way to clean up football in general.
They could do with extending it for a few more days as people will have to wait for payday. I don’t think the administrators helped by announcing the deadline of the 31st as it’s made our situation look a bit hopeless. Is anyone else starting to get suspicious about these administrators?
Yes, having read what they are charging as an hourly rate, and some other items, I’m not at all convinced they care about the well being of the club, and aren’t just stooges for the EFL.
They could potentially view the club as a bargain if the 5 Mil bid is true ( even with the debt, I thought it would take more).
I don’t know much about Frankel or Kalt; but, Frankel is one of 18 minority owners in the Tampa Bay Rays MLB franchise. Since he’s not really the managing/majority partner, it’s probably not fair to read too much into how the Rays are managed and try to transfer that into another sport/level/country. That said, if he would take Wigan over and manage them like the Rays owners have – it could be a great thing for Wigan. The Rays are a team that consistently has one of the lowest budgets, payroll & revenue in all of baseball. Despite that, they have been playoff contenders and quite successful competing with the bigger clubs over the last 10-15 years (since that ownership group took over). This could be a good fit.
FYI – I moved to the Tampa region @ 5 years ago.
The free-market/capitalist in me is generally against salary caps – I would much prefer that ALL revenues are shared 50-50 (gate receipts/sponsorship/local media/merchandise sales – should have to give half to the league to split among all teams).
That said, a salary cap should make the team more attractive to a potential buyer, as it brings more cost certainty. The ongoing uncertainty of covid & gate receipts is obviously still a huge issue/hindrance; but, the optimist in me wonders if a smart potential owner might see this as a moment in time where that uncertainty is pushing the purchase price lower than normal, making this the time to strike with more potential upside than normal (or at least less of a money hole than sports teams usually are).
Unfortunately, I think Cup Winners likely has the situation sized up correctly. What I’d like to know/see is: which bank holds the loan. Is there any possibility of voiding it/somehow saying it’s not valid if that’s a foreign bank based on all the shadiness (unlikely). I’m guessing the Choi probably raided most of the cash/assets – but, wouldn’t the board or someone at the club in a financial position have been questioning that. You would think there has to be some separation. If not – that might be a good thing as far as fighting this thing/bringing criminal wrongdoing to light – as that is probably what it will take – criminal charges of some kind, to avoid any point deduction. But, wow even just reducing a point deduction from 12 points to 9 could be absolutely huge.
Truly inspiring/uplifting effort by the squad. I’d feel better about survival if our hopes weren’t dependent on the likes of Millwall & Birmingham. Had to be this year, where someone with historically a fairly decent point total is likely to be relegated. Oh well, can only control what we can control, and the team has done their part & reinforced why it’s great to be a Wigan fan.
