Gomez wasn’t great; but, I didn’t think he was any worse than most of our players – without him I think we would have looked even worse than we did attacking the 10-men. I thought that McCarthy was really poor today – though everyone passed poorly & had giveaways – even Maloney.

Live in/from USA (Milwaukee).

Didn’t really start following the sport at all until the ’94 World Cup, and then started following the EPL because I loved the review show (on Sky/Fox here) – a great/interesting recap -I think every professional league sport should have a similar show. Started tuning into the games (early Sat/Sun mornings here) & got hooked. I generally don’t like rooting for the big/dynasty teams, so rooted for Newcastle originally, or the underdogs and/or teams with American players (there are a lot of Fulham fans in the States due to McBride/Bocanegra/Dempsey). Decided I would pick one team the year Wigan came up. Saw a replay of that first game against Chelsea & pretty much was locked in only rooting for them a few weeks later. A little tougher to get news/info & see all of the games where I’m at. Web search led me to this site – which has cemented me as even more of a fan. Hoping to make it to a game at some point – or for Wigan to do a pre-season exhibtion tour in the US a la ManU

Overrated: Charles N’Zogbia – I’ll always be thankful for the West Ham game; but, that’s probably the best bit of business we’ve ever done – getting that price for him. He couldn’t cross or defend at all, a one-trick pony (pace) who would routinely make the wrong decisions.

in reply to: Figueroa to West Ham #104211
N’Zogbia could be available at the end of season!

Maybe on a fee. I’ll always be grateful Wigan had him for the West Ham game & the Arsenal comeback. He had pace & would take on people 1 on 1. But really, he played no defense/did not track back, could not cross the ball, and in general had very poor decision making/game IQ. Either he got by somebody 1 on 1 – or often he turned it over. I don’t think he was up to the level of Valencia, Moses, Maloney, or even Bullard.

I can’t believe we sold him for what we did – by far the biggest ripoff we’ve ever executed on another club (no – I’m not forgetting Palacios).

LWB is our greatest need, Beausejour is absolute garbage and I don’t think he wants to put Figgy there.

Yes, but I was basing my thoughts on what I think Roberto thinks, not what you think. I don’t think that Roberto thinks Boozy Joe is garbage.
I didn’t say you was basing your thoughts on what I think Griffamunda. Just thought I was just putting my opinion of what I think our greatest need is out there.

Martinez needs to realise that Fat Jean is our weakest link! ;)
Yes but, my little card shark, my point is that Martinez doesn’t think Boozy is our weakest link so don’t expect him to look to replace him
Have you asked Roberto this question? If not how do you know?? He may think he is the weakest link but knows nobody that we can realistically capture to replace him so isn’t bothering? ;)

But seriously, even I don’t believe that what I wrote above is true (although technically it is possible).. And I don’t expect him to replace JB, I just personally think that he is currently our worst player so I personally would want him to look for a replacement for that position. I do think a LWB is our greatest need in all honesty. Suppose it’s just wishful thinking then ay? B)
Although Espinoza’s best position is defensive midfielder (in my opinion anyway); he has played as a defender & is left footed – so I’m thinking that Bobby is viewing him as cover for Beausejour -or maybe competetion.

This guy is a defender /midfielder I wonder if he his a replacement for Boyce in the wing back role maybe next season ? So that those who complain of signings pulling splinters out of there arse will get there wish to carry on complaining

Why would he be a replacement for Boyce for next season. If he is signing him now surely he should start inducing him into the team shortly? As even if the signing is for a longer term replacement, if we have him now surely we should give him games this season so he is closer to being ready and up to pace for the full season next season. So by that logic I believe we should see glipses of him at least. (That is if he even is a replacement for the RWB role)
If he takes anyone’s spot, it’s most likely to be McCarthy or McArthur in the current formation. I don’t see him as a wingback; but, Martinez may see something I don’t. And while he may not see 90 minutes every week, I think Rog will definitely get some minutes.

in reply to: Roger Espinoza #97650

I think he’ll be a good fit. At the very least, provides some cover with Watson injured, and should we should see less of Jones (unless Jones is needed at left wingback).

in reply to: Roger Espinoza #95886

What reports? SportingKC’s site hasn’t posted any injury updates/is still saying they expect him back from his ankle sprain for the MLS playoff opener on Nov 4th.

This window or are we waiting until his contract runs out/we can get him on a free in January?

Kansas City has been the best team in MLS this year (IMO), and should be setting themselves up for a championship run. So, in theory they might be willing to keep him until January & risk losing him for free (or at least risk driving up the price). Also, they just lost one of their better players for the rest of the year (Bunbury – ACL) – so that could either make them less likely to sell (thinking they can’t afford to lose anyone else if they want the championship), or more likely (as the MLS playoff is no sure thing to begin with, and now they are down an important piece already, so might as well cash out).

What ever happened with Pappa – was that just rumor, or considered a lock come January?

in reply to: Excellent stuff #92221
agree with fatfan a little bit on gomez, he’s too good for the championship, but not quite good enough for the prem, a shame really coz he’s got the brain and the skills, just lacks the pace.

Agree. Still think he’s a very useful prem player depending on opposition and situation.

Good catch. Does the BBC have an ombudsman (link) we can flood with e-mails to point out that stupidity?

in reply to: Moses Gone #92062
Moses isn’t a one-trick pony, he’s a show pony; he has all the tricks and flicks that make him look a blinder on Match Of The Day, but for every bit of brilliance he shows, there are another half dozen times that he elects to dribble and loses the ball instead of passing, or he ambles back, uninterested, allowing his opposite number free rein.

In all honestly I would have liked Moses to stay, but I’m not overly concerned that he’s gone as I think this will signal the appearance of our young Japanese loanee, who, by all accounts is a team player, and shows intelligence – which is something Moses is severely lacking in.

Good luck Victor, but I think you’re a silly boy who’ll end up leaving Chelsea in a sulk with very little playing time under your belt.

Add me to the list who agree with this.

I always thought that N’Zogbia was the same way – he really wasn’t great at crossing either seemed to often make poor decisions re: dribble/shoot vs pass.

Still a little sad to see Moses go though. Agree that I don’t see him getting the playing time he needs at Chelsea.

in reply to: After Match Thoughts….Don’t Be Too Critical! #91733

I thought the team as a whole had a sub-par passing performance – too many unforced give-aways (even Ali’s distribution didn’t seem to be quite as good as normal to me). Also, some questionable decision-making in the final third (I’m still not sold on DiSanto).

I thought Kone looked very good once he came on. I thought we actually played as well or better than Chelsea if you take away that one counter (well taken by Ivanovic) and the penalty (Ramis should have let him go – I think Hazard was running out of room to the line).

Overall, team looked just OK, not great, not terrible. Next week should tell us more.

in reply to: 40 nations #91549
Would this be their actual nationality or the country they have represented at international level?

Chimbonda was from Guadeloupe but played for France
The Observer really needs to clarify this!! ;)

Just a note – Guadeloupe is a territory of France/inhabitants have french citizenship – so I don’t think that one matters – though still an important distinction in all the other cases listed.
(Aside – FIFA doesn’t recognize Guadeloupe because of this, but they do play in CONACACAF’s championships – if they were a separate country, some of those french teams may not have had as much success – I believe both Henry, Thuram, and 1-2 others are actually from Guadeloupe, not France proper).

in reply to: Marco Pappa #90118

Since Moses seems to be on the way out, I think Pappa would be good – one of the most creative players in CONCACAF. Came on & turned the momentum in the last qualifier against the USA.
