If this story is true then all integrity of the game is finished in my opinion if the EFL deduct those points as it sets a very dangerous precedent going forward throughout professional football. Has to be a NO POINTS deduction if we can survive the season and beyond given these alleged exeptional ‘Force Majeure’ circumstances, the most crucial month in our history is now upon us for sure! One thing is cetain is that no team talk will be needed tomorrow by Paul Cook or the coaching staff.

Agree. If true – this calls into question the integrity of every single league match – including the premiership, as all football fans assume the games are legit/fair. Furthermore, if true, surely there’s a law broken, and if possible any funds still in the UK in the owners hand should be frozen while investigations occur. If true, a lifetime FIFA ban should be in order; however, the only way to restore integrity of the game and set an example for all sports is to prosecute and put someone in jail for fraud.

To summarise, new owner also had a stake in old ownership, old ownership have lent new £28m to buy the club, decided not to fund it and put us into admin to recoup £28m, which is £13m more than what they bought the club for. SCAM and the EFL are also accountable!
These lads make the Oystons look like the Dalai Lama! How can this not be illegal? They should never be able to enter the country again let alone own a club!

I’m not an expert in the laws; but, on the surface this does strike the accountant in me as illegal in some fashion – to swap out the loans like that I have to think they would recognize a gain on sale or revenue of some kind and pay tax on that – I’m thinking it might be very hard to account for that properly for the publicly traded company/pass muster, and I doubt Stanley plans on paying tax. Chinese companies have had many accounting irregularities over the last few years…

portant. Start a new season only when it’s totally safe and ethical to do so

2 Wait until it’s safe and complete this season at your own venues then start a new shortened but agreed season. Everyone knows the rules before they start that one.

I fully support this option (and really don’t understand the need to complicate matters by voiding the current season or agreeing to end the current season when everyone hasn’t played the same schedules).

Finish out the year/schedule. Shorten next year – likely to just playing everyone 1 time vs home and away, luck of the draw who you get at home. Hopefully things will be back to normal enough that cutting next season’s schedule by half gets everything back ‘in line’. Also, doing that, everyone knows the rules going into the season/is on the same footing.

That should avoid most of the lawsuits as well. Only real issues are player contracts possibly running out; but, it’s really just like adding an extra transfer window in season.

in reply to: This season #186006

My solution would be: suspend ‘as normal’ during summer break. Continue the current season when the new season would normally start – and finish the 19-20 season in the fall. This season just essentially has an extra transfer window. For what would have been the 20-21 season, cut the season in half (play everyone 1 time instead of home and away).

in reply to: How many points will we need? #185699

I said 50 a couple of weeks ago, and I’ll stick with that. With Charlton/Hull/Middlesborough sliding…there’s an outside chance that 47 could be enough; but, I wouldn’t bet on that. I think we need 52 to be absolutely sure; but, 50 should be enough.

in reply to: The “WE ARE STAYIN UP” Thread #184660

Hopefully, the wins keep coming; because I’m not sure we can rely on someone else going in the tank. Looking at the table, looks like it may take a minimum of 50 points (or more) to stay up. Unfortunately, with few really good teams this year/so many being beatable/average, everyone is getting some points, and it doesn’t look like a year with 3 or 4 teams averaging less than a point/game.

in reply to: New manager !!! #183927

“What we can afford” should not factor into the decision to fire Cook. If the board/or fans think we ned a new manager, action needs to be taken – Cook’s salary is a sunk cost. If Cook is retained, it had better be because the board thinks these are the best results anyone can get out of this group of players and they are OK with going down to League one.

I’m of the opinion that a change needs to be made. If funds are limited in brining in a new manager, then the board should take a flier on a new/first time manager. That’s probably what Wigan needs to do in order to be successful/punch above our weight anyway – to think outside the box/be on the cutting edge and take chances – Not go after “safe”/retread choices.

in reply to: Payoff v Gardening Leave #183499

If the board comes to the conclusion that he needs to go (which you would think they should at this point), his salary really shouldn’t be a stumbling block. His contract is a sunk at that (this) point. Granted, even though those on the board should know the concept of a sunk cost, in reality, people get emotionally tied to decisions and have trouble actually separating the sunk cost from the decision making process. I think it’s fairly clear at this point that they are better off without Cook in charge. Without knowing the details of Cook’s contract, if they want to avoid a large payout now, they should be able to re-assign him (put him on gardening duty) and pay out his salary as normal.

I am all in favor of that.

Moving forward, Wigan really needs to hire a manager who is willing to think outside the box & do things differently since we have less resources than others at this level – that’s the only way to thrive. You can’t do it having an old time dumb jock who is set in his ways/predictable and just being conservative or doing what everyone else does.

Mate, in all honesty, I don’t think we will have a club to support within 5 years, maybe less. I really dont.

Can see Choi jumping ship if w

Certainly hope you are wrong. But, that possibility/conjecture is all the more reason why Cook needs to go, and should have already been sacked, regardless of any $ owed to him. Something has to change, and Wigan would be better off taking a flyer on a first time/possible up and coming manager – get some unknown who doesn’t cost much. If he’s successful and moves on after 2 years, at least Wigan’s saved. Getting an occasional point out of your ‘best’ performances just doesn’t cut it.

in reply to: Jordan Hugill #179853

How about Nahki Wells from Burnley? He’s been there a while now and getting nowhere and wasn’t even involved yesterday! He has scored goals at this level before and might not have the wage demands of Hugill since he’d be coming from Burnley…

Was reading somewhere that Wells has been on international duty in the ANC and has been given time off by Dyche to rest. That’s why he hasn’t been involved in preseason nothing sinister there.[/quote]

He was playing for Bermuda in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. He looked good in those games – scored a penalty vs Costa Rica and a goal in their win over Nicaragua. A Big reason Bermuda was competetive/punched above their weight class.

in reply to: Jamal Lowe. #179643
Not seen anything concrete to confirm it yet, so let’s not get too excited.
Lowe, Robinson, a decent right back, another striker (not Clarke) and maybe a centre half and that should give us a decent squad to build around.

Right back: another tip/scouting report from USA – would love to see Wigan sign Reggie Cannon – but, he probably doesn’t qualify for work permit yet. He’s looked really good in brief international callups (start vs Mexico), and would likely be cheap right now. Also would have loved to see/too bad Wigan couldn’t secure goalkeeper Zack Steffen on loan (Man City sent to Fortuna Dusseldorf). US may not export much talent; but, we generally do goalkeepers well – and he has potential to be the best.

The reality is we could stay up without gaining another point. Another 3pts and we almost certainly would stay up.

Wow. I realize you’re trying to make a point; but, that’s an incredibly optimistic take, bordering on delusional. With the form that Reading, Millwall, and even Rotherham are in, I think it will take an absolute minimum of 4-5 more points to stay up, and more likely 6, if not more.

in reply to: Well done lads (again) #164350

Perversely it is incredibly much harder to score against 10 men rather than 11, so for us to score a few is a reallypositive sign.
Going down to 10 means the team sacrifice any attacking ideas and concentrate on defensive work. Very hard to break down so we did extremely well.

Good Link. However, it doesn’t exactly address GL’s point that it is “harder to score”. The article measures “harder to play against” and measures by the team result/points gained. I’d be very interested to take the result out, and see if it’s really harder or easier to score against – regardless of if you are scored on (or what the score was before the red card).

in reply to: Can football evolve? #162296
    (nicked, but is interesting)
The better the entertainment the more popular it becomes. It must evolve. Do you have ideas to make football more entertaining?

To say “it must evolve” assumes that the game is not already at its peak entertainment value. Any changes or “evolution” will bring some risk of the game becoming less entertaining/turning off some fans.

That said, I think that generally most find a wide open game with a high pace of play to be the most entertaining. Fresh legs generally allow for more running/a higher pace of play. While I would be against allowing unlimited substitutions or re-entry of players who previously subbed off (think hockey or basketball) because I believe that it would reduce coaching strategy too much; I do think allowing a 4th sub could help. I’d also be in favor of allowing an extra sub in weather conditions where the heat index at game time was above a pre-determined level.

I’m also for transparency – let’s scrap added time and have an official clock so everyone knows how much time is left. Stop the clock if someone is injured or time wasting. Too much room for corruption currently, and when the extra time is longer/shorter than expected, it always seems to favor the big clubs or favorites in international competition.

in reply to: Stay or Go #156634

Just to add to the last part of my last post – who on this team could you possibly see staying with the club as we move up? Where is this team’s Jimmy Bullard or Troy Deeney? You can say the quality of the players isn’t good enough, but that too falls on the manager/shows either a lack of talent evaluation or development, or both.
