Too many would rather sit in a pub, spouting all their ‘expert’ analasys on the game, rather than actually going to the game.

People in the pub are the last people we should be worrying about as a club, it’s the next generation of support we should focus on.

There are five season ticket holders in our group, when the 3 for 30 offer was on we brought seven people over the course of the three games, four of which were juniors, all of whom want to return.

Most of the central sections of the West stand, who are season ticket holders, didn’t hold back in their criticism of Gomez and the decision to put him on.

No they didn’t. Some did indeed criticize. Some clapped the team off, as they normally do. Most had already f***** off by the time the players had left the pitch, as they normally do.
The criticism of Gomez started the moment he took his top off and didn’t stop all game.

He was first off the pitch and got more stick, the same handfull of fans stuck around to clap the rest of the team off.

Instead of urging the team on for the last 25 minutes Martinez lost much of the crowd, in most cases it was simply frustration, but rarely have I seen a managers substition change the mood of the crowd so much.

Caldwell, Bramble etc. were clapped off.

You can get away with a lack of effort if you produce a killer pass or two, but even his regular passing is short, nevermind anything as ambitious as playing someone in.

Like it or not bringing on Gomez lost most of the crowd, we lost the midfield battle and added nothing to our attacking game.

At that point in the game we looked likely to concede, bringing on Gomez made it an inevitability.

If we had brought Moses on we would have given Stoke another player to keep an eye on, they had enough trouble dealing with N’Zogbia, Rodallega and Scotland.

That’s cheap compared to the rest of the Prem and plenty of Championship clubs.
We’re talking about the best league in the most popular sport on the planet.

We are far from your typical Premiership or Championship club, what the rest do doesn’t apply.
We should have South stand only offers giving each adult ticket holder two junior tickets for £1. If the scheme is popular extend it to the East stand wings, if demand oustrips supply, the club can then consider offering ticket prices inline with the rest.
What’s the difference?
About 50 years football league history and generations of lost support, meaning we as a club can’t click our fingers and attract 15k-20k extra fans overnight like, for example, Stoke.

We have the 5k South stand sitting empty most games, would any Latics fan begrude it being used to offer very cheap family tickets or for community projects?

I couldn’t afford to take my two nieces into the West stand, offer a decent deal for the South stand and the club would have two new season ticket holders.

On this occassion the blame lies squarely with Martinez.

I’m sorry to say he lost the majority of the crowd tonight, and it’s difficult to defend him.

We were comfortable at half-time, McCarthy needed to be replaced due to an injury, but for some perculiar reason Martinez then shuffled the whole team.

Wouldn’t it have been simpler to keep changes to a minimum, then give Moses a run out on 75 minutes as a straight swap for Scotland.

At least Caldwell appears to be instilling a bit of fight in the defence, while Boyces pace has helped at right-back.

Wigan, Bolton, Blackburn, Fulham etc. have to go above and beyond to fill seats.

Unfortunately we have by far the worst marketing efforts in the Premiership, we are even humiliated by a Super League team’s backroom staff, who leave no stone unturned to get fans in.

The only people going to Latics games now are the hardcore and whatever family or friends they take to games. The club makes no effort to bring neutrals in aside from the odd school or sports club.

Football and rugby support doesn’t crossover, but whereas Mick Hogan and his team have embraced competition and broadened their horizons, our staff appear ashamed of the club, you never here anything from them unless it’s a belated defence of another awful attendance. Theirs no ambition, no excitement, no drive.

Last season Blackburn were on the brink of relegation yet the club managed to pack out Ewood Park for the crucual relegation battles with great ticket incentives. Latics on the other hand seem to be going from bad to worse, I’ll be suprised if there’s many more than 13k on against Stoke, which for any Premiership club is a disgrace.

Honestly we should just ignore the morons in the blue side of the town….yes I know some shatics fans who are decent blokes but they are the exception rather than the rule….90% of them are skin head hooligan idiots and their collective IQ wouldnt be above 60.

The best way to deal with them is just ignore them, eventually they’ll go away and die because latics in the premiership is just not sustainable

It would be quite amusing if they weren’t so sincere.

                      Cringeworthy.

It doesn’t matter who causes the damage, the point is there is no recovery time once the rugby season starts.

Neither does it matter what Latics, the rugby or Whelan thinks, once the Premier League get involved action has to be taken.

A couple of reasoned responses above without the vitriol usually associated with this ongoing topic.

I think the reason the Bolton game was re-arranged for this period is purely financial, i.e. improved cash flow, money in the bank in early February rather than in April / May.

I also agree that the Rugby does far less damage than the football, in that the sliding tackles in football tend to dig into the pitch.

Both clubs are a victim of circumstances.

Everytime this issue is dragged up it’s by the misinformed press, at which point the RL lot go off on a tangent and portray Latics fans as a bunch of thugs who beat up their dear old granny!

Latics suffer from this press treatment week in, week out, we get a ‘poor’ crowd in the FA Cup, it’s all over the national press, you get a sub 5k crowd in the early rounds of the Challenge Cup, it isn’t even mentioned, that’s the way it goes.

Pitches always get **** up at this time of year, but most other clubs can give their pitch some rest, we can’t.

The last time the pitch was repaired it cost £500k, a SL clubs income is only a couple of million, so your rent won’t be much more than a few hundred thousand per season. Latics Premiership income is around £50m, even in the Championship it would be around the £10m+ mark.

Ultimately both clubs would be happier with seperate grounds, but unless you go through with your back-up option at a revised LSV, it isn’t going to happen.

PS, I’ve never been convinced about the football causing more damage than rugby argument, based on nothing more than myself seeing the pitch first hand. Not only are sliding tackles a thing of the past in football, surely every rugby tackle is equivalent to a sliding tackle?

Even if we stayed up on the last day of the season you couldn’t seriously argue the club is in a mess on the field.

Off the field is an entirely different matter.

To be more accurate, Latics popped up, numerous times.

It’s like an open therapy session, there’s more interest in Latics than their opening fixture.

Whether he was there or not, it is bang on again. Who in their right mind would pay £20+ to watch that every week unless they’re a diehard?

If your a fan it shouldn’t matter what is served up on the pitch, watching a successful team is the icing on the cake.

Whatever way you look at it, with Premiership football, a database of thousands, a self contained South stand, and sufficient resources to pay certain players tens of thousands of pounds per week…….yet never get near the first team, there are no excuses not to have that stand packed each week.

Instead we make an effort for a handful of games, then our marketing and promotions disappear off the radar.

Pack that South stand, and rather than attempts by rivals and the press to take the ****, we’d only be 2k-3k off home sell-outs.
