The fact still remains that Wigan didn’t give away any tickets.

If I wanted to be a **** I could slag off everything the rugby are doing and give them no credit.

I haven’t because they have done some great targeted marketing on a selection of games. This is something I hope Latics replicate when the new Chief Executive takes up his position.

Hiding behind technicalities to justify your ‘no free tickets’ stance is a necessity on your part as some rugby fans have slated Latics for similar initiatives.

By giving even an inch of ground you’d label a whole host of rugby fans hypocritical.

It’s not just what they would have offered as individuals it’s the message their inclusion would have sent out.

Hart was outstanding yet left out because he was considered too young yet our team was taken apart by a German team containting much of their U21 squad.

A.Johnson was left out for similar reasons in addition to proving we are willing to play players out of position simply because they are a big name.

As for Dawson he should have been included on form alone.

Thats before you even look at recalling Carragher ahead of Jagielka or Scholes at the expense of J.Cole.

The three form players at the end of last season were Hart, Dawson and A.Johnson yet none of them got so much as a kick.

”but when talking about England I think he’s spot on”

Why the hell should the premier league have any say in the running of our national side??
The premier league is the biggest money grabbing organisation in the history of football that cares about nothing but profit. What positive input they could have on teh English national side is beyind me

Englands failures reflects poorly on the Premier League so it’s in their interests to have a successful national team.

The FA are waisting millions on all sorts of projects yet English football is going backwards from the grass roots to the national team.

You mean a couple of sponsors paid a nominal fee to sponsor the St Georges Day game and in return were allocated a few 1000 tickets apiece so technically they were purchased?

Purchased. So they weren’t given away.

Or the thousands of tickets given away to players and their families for the Community Day and the sports clubs given tickets for the Leeds game?

No tickets were given away. Of course, if you can prove otherwise and back up your claim then I’ll gladly admit I’m wrong.

After a couple of early season 12k crowds the club took it upon themselves to boost attendances and I’ve always given them credit for that but jumping through hoops to claim these are not giveaways isn’t fooling anyone.
The club know with so few fixtures they only need put a huge effort into 2 or 3 games and this will see the average jump from 12k-13k to 15k-16k.
              It’s a clever marketing tactic.

Yes, as another poster put it, the Wigan marketing team has come on leaps and bounds over the past few years. Since Eric Pollard took over from Whelan they’ve certainly got their act together.[/quote]
You are obviously well upto speed on all things rugby related.

You know the St Georges Day game was a marketing excerice were a couple of sponsors were given tickets as part of a package so they were technically purchased. Don’t you think the rugby would do similar every game if it was such a money generator?

You also know the Community Day saw a couple of thousand players and their families take in the game with complimentary tickets.

It’s like those discussion about professional footballers coming from Wigan which descend into farce because some rugby fans won’t given an inch of ground to Latics fans.

You have to conclude some rugby fans really do believe only a couple of thousand Wiganers watch Latics while there is something in Wiganers DNA preventing them from playing professional football.

It’s not desperation it’s simply the rugby taking advantage of a cheap time slot.

That doesn’t mean it’s going to be all that effective which is why sports clubs don’t advertise on TV.

I take the point about differing perceptions however.

Latics average 18k-20k which is labelled poor by some while the rugby average 14k-16k which is considered magnificent by the very same people.

The excuse is football is the national sport but this omits the crucial point many Wiganers grew up supporting out of town teams which is a situation that will only change many years down the line.

On the flip side the rugby attract the vast majority of rugby supporters from the town which is why they target the likes of Bolton and Preston to expand their fanbase.

Likewise Latics get over 20k for an end of season TV game against Hull and the same people say we are desperate because jumior tickets were offered for £1. When the rugby gave away 5k+ tickets for the Harlequins game these people praised this as superb marketing.

Mick Hogan was the guy who shook things up at the rugby with concepts like the Big One and Community Day but with him departing they seem to be reverting more towards ticket giveaways and gimicks.

Hopefully Latics new Chief Executive does great things for the club.

Like him or not Ashley Cole was the only player to live upto the world class tag.

Gerrard and Lampard have never delivered on the international stage and Rooney is fast going down that route.

You don’t need a superstar manager you need a motivater.

I realise many don’t like Beckham but Maradonna has proven all you need is a motivator for the national team.

It’s time to dictch Gerrard, Lampard and much of the rest of the squad.

The only player that has proved himself to be truely world class in Ashley Cole.

All is not lost as we have players like Joe Hart and Adam Johnson who weren’t even given a look in.

The former Wigan rugby league chairman has replaced long-serving chief Derek Shaw in the Deepthroat hot tub after joining Trevor Hemmings’ Nob End revolution.

“I’m a ****, I’ve made many promises, but what I can say to Nob End fans is that I will do everything in my power to help Nob End back to where they belong in the basement of English football,” said Lindsay.

“I know Nob End fans will want their wet dreams fulfilled, every fan does, and I want that to happen – but there is a tough road ahead.

It will not be an easy ride, it will be rough and hard, but there is so much going for Nob End.

“I walked into Deepthroat yesterday, saw the stadium and came in my pants, ‘Wow, what a **** hole’.

“Maybe some supporters will be deciding whether or not to buy a season ticket after I was appointed chairman, but I’d say to them, ‘Have faith, we can achieve something special working together, something real special’.

“Preston’s cum through a difficult time, and it can only cum through with the determination and penetration of the players.

“We don’t want people who are just in love with their pay packets, love me too.

“They will have to bend, twist and blow, be hungry.

“I hope that everyone who wears the white shirt of Nob End is hungry and fit and has that desire to play for the once famous badge.

“The manager will know that better than me, but that’s the philosophy I’ve always worked with.”

Lindsay got straight down to business this morning and one of his first tasks was to suck off manager Darren Ferguson and his backroom staff.

“He has a fantastic member but I’ve always loved a challenge,” he added.

“In 1979, when I took Wigan Rugby League club over they were bankrupt, when I left them they were bankrupt and homeless.

“When I took charge as the dictator of Rugby League I sold the sport down the river, negotiating the Sky deal with Rupert Murdoch and I was tournament director of the Rugby League M62 Cup.

“There are many things I want to do at Deepthroat, but my first duty at Preston will be to propose a groundshare with the Wigan Warriors, try and bring some confidence to our investors, then make sure the club is run into the ground.

“I think one of my biggest assets is that I have a liking for sportsmen, how they tick.

“I was team masseur of the M62 rugby league team for five years and I understand how a dressing room works.

“Sport is all about winning, and while Nod End have no divine right to do that, I’ve found the harder you **** the luckier you become and I’m determined to ruin Nob End.

You have to feel sorry for the rugby lot.

All these years they’ve convinced themselves Wigans a rugby town yet they now step out of their front door to be confronted by a sea of St Georges flags.

They are baffled by it, baffled!

But that generation hasn’t been pushed enough by the following one, for whatever reason – Premiership cash, foreign managers etc. Try and name an England back four from outside this squad aged 24 and under….Half of Germany’s squad is aged 23 and under. Have a look round the top 7 clubs for how many English players Capello has to choose from.

We’ve got virtually no strength in depth and the top players aren’t up to it.

I do agree with much of what you say but I believe key additions like Joe Hart, Adam Johnson, Michael Dawson, Joe Cole and Phil Jagielka could add quality, desire and balance to the team.

They can afford to miss out on a few weeks wages…………

If it wasn’t for the fan and press reaction I’m quite sure a number of them wouldn’t even turn out for England.

Blame the manager, blame the ball, and especially blame the press who brainwash people into believing England can win the World Cup, when in reality we are just a very ordinary team with very ordinary players.

I don’t believe anyone seriously believes we have a chance of winning the World Cup but we do expect the players to make the most of their ability.

It’s like saying “oh look my horse has won” when winning two furlongs out only to be beaten into third by some late chargers.

Football is the most unpredictable game in the world, that’s why its the most popular.
Mr Rooney could bag a hat trick against Algeria and go on to get the golden boot in helping England pick up the Jules Rimet.

And like ’86 and ’90 the players will be praised if they turn things around.

Everyone hopes that happens but we see the attitude these players show in the Premier League.

English football from the grass roots to the national team seems to be in utter chaos but so long as the administrators, officials and players take so much out of the game it isn’t in their interests to change anything.
