We will start with a new team again, and will have to gel again. It’ll be a hard task.

No we wont. Last time we went down, we had players who were wanted by championship clubs. No Championship side will want these plodders.

Where did it all go Wrong ?

Easy answer: when Roberto bailed out after taking us down, cos he hadn’t got the balls to prove he could get us back up ! His excuse was that he couldn’t adapt his style in the Championship.

Was that the same time as half the squad also bailed out because they hadn’t a shred of loyalty to the club?

Truth is there was a fire sale in the summer of 2013 as DW wanted to recoup as much cash as possible, which included a pot of compo for the manager.

Hopefully not Pie. With a winning side and reasonable priced ticketing we could see similar crowds to last season. The extras from this compared to last will most likely drop off again so it is essential to have a side playing positive attacking football. No massive turnover of playing staff required. This squad minus the borrowed invalids could storm League One with the right man in charge.

I don’t doubt they’d storm League one with the current squad, but those who consider themselves to be worthy of Championship football and don’t fancy being back on League 1 wages will have their agents agitating for a move all the way up to 31 August. Similarly, if the club foolishly haven’t included relegation clauses, then they’ll be trying to peddle some of the higher earners to save cash.

Throw into the pot no manager for next season, so no transfer targets, no news on what price ST will be and the fact that Wiganers are generally tighter than a duck’s arse when it comes to spending money on sporting fixtures, and there is very little to convince anyone but the most die-hard blue to put aside £200+ for next season’s campaign.

We were down to around 7,000 last season, which was a drop of 10,000 from the Prem. This season, the euphoria of promotion and the lure of dirt cheap season tickets managed to persuade 3,000 of the deserters to come back.

Sad as it seems, with no announcement on ST prices for next season, no parachute payment to subsidise them, and every reality we’ll be swapping trips to Newcastle for trips to Southend, then I can see the desertion gathering pace.

Because the 10,000 who used to watch us 4 years ago haven’t gone watching Liverpool, Everton, Utd, City or any other NW side, so using them as a pull factor when comparing to clubs in dispersed locations is irrelevant.

The missing 10,000 were glory hunters – similar to the thousands of tourists who used to pack out the Neutral end at Fulham when they were in the greed league.

How many would follow the Toon if they had Utd,Liverpool,City and Everton on the flamin doorstep. This is the point everyone misses when comparing our crowds. Enough people in the past have took the piss out of us for small crowds they don’t need any help from our own fans as well.YAMS.

                  That’s not a realistic comparison.

The 10,000 or so that used to come to the DW in 2013 haven’t gone to those clubs, as their average crowds are pretty much the same as they were 4 years ago. They’ve just stopped watching live football and found something else to do on a Saturday afternoon.

Say what you like about Newcastle fans being deluded or mugs, but they’ve stuck with their team after both their recent relegations & sell out almost all away games, even though they are repeatedly fleeced by ticket prices.

I think the 7 and 4 comment was referring to Ipswich

So did I GL, hence my tongue in cheek comment.

I’m glad to see someone actually read and understood the posts before jumping on the outrage bus.

It’ll be like the Man Utd game – fans seeing this as a last chance for a long time to be visiting stadiums like this for a game in front of over 50,000.

Soon we’ll have to rely on winning two League/FA Cup ties to even have a sniff of playing at the likes of Newcastle.

I bet we haven’t sold out for Ipswich on Tuesday night though!

It sounds like they have exploited a loophole in the Tories Free Schools policy to set up a free school within their stadium, knowing full well they could charge oodles of rent and the Tory Govt would bankroll it because to not do so would admit that the Free Schools policy was flawed.

Other than it being Bolton and we don’t like them, is it any different to us paying rent to use the DW, even though both are owned by the same person?

The squad that won League 1 should have been good enough to finish above the bottom three without any additions. We also had Emyr Huws returning to the fold after his self-imposed exile, only to be flogged just as the season started.

The transfer activity in the summer was uninspiring, and did nothing to improve the strength of the squad. Player retention/recruitment is usually dealt with by the Chief Exec and/or Chairman. However JJ is still in post whilst two managers have been sacked.

There are two companies within Wigan Athletic Holdings – Wigan Athletic AFC Limited (which is the football club), and Wigan Football Company Limited (which runs the stadium).

They are separate companies, but Dave Whelan has underwritten both.

Have a look at the two sets of company accounts.

Probably explains why Whelan cant even give the football club away, as the value is contained in the bit he isn’t offering for sale.

A bit like an Estate agent trying to flog the fresh air surrounding a property.

Burton or Forest could implode; so we have to keep the pressure on and keep our fingers crossed.

Keep the pressure on implies we are at the very minimum matching their results. Burton have taken 3pts from their last 2 games and Forest have taken 1 point. We’ve lost both.

I imagine that a club of our stature makes building an academy another major drain on resources so its always gonna be low priority. Like SW says we wanted top players brought in on high wages at the time but now we should have set up the academy instead . Don’t know what the club could have done differently to be honest. I think that Euxton was maybe seen as an offer too good to turn down.

And the way its going, we’ll be selling it back to Bolton once they change places with us. :(

DW, for all his good intentions for WAFC and the town, was a “want it now” type of Chairman. Lets not dress it up – he bankrolled the club from the lower leagues to the top tier with signings and wages designed to bring rapid success at whatever cost. His focus was purely on reaching the Premier League. Once there, signings and wages were almost compulsory if his club and him were going to have any sort of attention – anything less would have seen us in the Swindon & Barnsley categories of blink and you’d miss them.

During that meterioric rise at the start of the millennium, DW didn’t build an academy – the foundation to underpin the club. Football is a very popular sport, yet in all those premier league years, I cannot remember a single Wigan-born and academy developed player making any meaningful contribution. Even now, Flores and Chow are the best we seem to have produced, and they were deemed not good enough for Championship football.

The horse has now bolted. The premier league cash has gone and the parachute payments are about to stop. If an academy is to be built, it will be small-scale as any money spent on that is money that wont be spent on improving the poor squad we have now.
