I had a laugh when they appointed Dowie. What were they thinking? He helped take Newcastle down, now Hull. Didn’t he take Palace down(?) and would have done the same to Charlton if they hadn’t sacked him first

Brown was a permatanned fool of an egotist, but he’d took them up and kept them up. Like Jewell with us in 2nd season in Prem he deserved a chance to try and keep them up.

Lets hope neither they nor Burnley win at weekend so we can enjoy the Hull game.

33-1 – its a good price that – may have a few quid on that.

I remember the home game as well. Think Plymouth were top or nearly promoted, so they all came up for the party and we stuffed them.

They were nearly as mad as the Sunderland fans on the muddy hill

Can’t understand the leaving early either – especially whenthere’s one goal or less in it.

The only time I’ve ever done it we were losing 1-0 and so dire under Swain or someone, the moment I started walking out with my back to the action, Andy Pilling equalised. Never again.

    Bruce. At the moment.

Better balance in the team, used the flanks better, more fighting spirit, less prone to collapse like a pack of cards, more adaptable against different sorts of teams in style of play than Martinez’s side.

Martinez should do some serious thinking about why he can get some good results against better sides, and not against the rest. To me its because he plays too narrow against lesser teams with his winger policy, making us easy to defend against

But he’s learning, and may become a better manager than Bruce.

I don’t think Watson has ever been given a long enough run to make a judgement. From what I’ve seen he’s at least as good as Thomas, and a better midfielder than Scharner. Add his goals and set piece delivery and you’ve got to say he deserves a run at least

in reply to: Martinez vs Wenger #30057

Finally realising your mistake is not tactical genius. We’ve always looked a better side with Rodallega down middle, and when Moses has been on the pitch. That should have been the formation/personnel from the start

Lets hope Watson gets a good run now. We need goal threat from midfield, and his set piece delivery is miles better than Zogs.

They’ve just sold their centre half, Smalling, to Utd for a fee that could rise to £10m. They, like all other clubs below the top 6-7 are basically a selling club, but they haven’t got too many that could fetch a decent price. Hodgsons gift has been gelling a group of ordinary players to overperform, like Jewell in 05/06.

“Very true…Valencia was no better for us than N’zogbia has been. (Bar defensive duties, but I would probably give zoggy the edge in attack.)”

You must be watching different players to me mate. How many goals has NZogbia actually set up this season? OK he’s hindered by playing on the wrong wing, but how many times does he get the ball, cut inside, beat one player and lose it. Too predictable, and one of the reasons we’re not beating the lower teams – no width.

He’s a decent player being completely misused by Martinez. Judging by his tactics this season, he’d have played Valencia on the left.

I agree with a lot of what you say, but this has mainly been the case for the last 10 years. When Whelan first came in and put some cash in we had loads of people at end of careers coming for the cash – e.g Redfearn (try reading his book….). Jewell had to clear most of them out.

In my mind the only team at Wigan that had any real identity was the one that came up through the Championship and survived the first year – I’m thinking Filan, Baines, McCulloch, Bullard, Roberts, De Zeuw (cos of his earlier spell), Kav to a lesser extent, Ellington if he had stayed. Since that team was broken up, there’s no identity at all, and our longest serving player was booed off yesterday (deservedly).

I don’t mind being used as a stepping stone as long as its clear that is happening – e.g Palacios, Valencia, Chimbonda (if that had been managed better). We’ve also done well rehabilitating quality players who lost their way (Heskey, Kirkland, Bramble). I’d like to see more of two things though.
    1. Trying to bring some local lads into the team. I know people will throw competition from Utd and other big local sides at this idea, but we could offer kids/parents the real prospect of first team football. It’d also build a bond between the team and town and maybe help with gates.
    2. Try picking up more British talent from down the leagues or bigger teams reserves on the promise of first team football. Again people will say Cotterill, Folan etc, but we managed to persuade Moses and McCarthy and we’ve not even played Moses. He must be gutted he came here. And Sinclair must be too.

in reply to: Roberto Martinez or Jack Sparrow? #28190

His signings have been patchy, especially weighed against his sales.

But Moses and McCarthy look quality. Maybe if he gave Moses a game, and played McCarthy down the middle (he’s always looked very average wide and great down the middle).

To me, playing Thomas, Diame and Scharner in the middle is overkill, especially for someone who claims to play the passing game. If he really wants to play everything through the middle, as he seems to want to do by playing the wingers on the wrong wings, he needs better passers in there.

Great – more money to waste on wages of foreign journeymen

Don’t suppose any clubs will use the money to cut ticket prices for fans

in reply to: Mario and Scharner #27485

Mario isn’t the player he was. Boyce is looking better, both defensively and going forward at RB

I’d keep Scharner for versatility, and he’s a better centre half than Caldwell if he can be persuaded to play there

We’re a nice little team, its just that we’ve chosen to play in the backyard of the biggest Rugby league team in the country/world.

    Or words to that effect.

    Thats why we hate them.

in reply to: ONE TOWN #26085

Anyone who has been a regular throughout Latics league existance will find it hard to ever have anything but hatred for Wigan RL.
