Best manager we have had since Jewell

I agree vat. But what about our “cup winning” manager.

I hope the January window I about forward planning. It has the potential to be disruptive and short term. In my view the squad is good enough to win the league, despite one r two shortcomings. We should be using this window to sign players that we can with us next season so getting a running start for next season rather than signing when players get back from summer hols. It will be difficult to sign players on the promise of promotion, but that would be my preference. I would rather not sign anyone than inflate the squad with players that we will have to get rid of if we go up.

You make some good points there. And i agree, get players in now who will help with the promotion push & beyond.

Being top of the league SHOULD mean that we dont sell anyone. But, this is wigan.

A sign of a good team is one who can grind out wins even when it isn’t playing well.

”In form” are you having a laugh?
Winning games in a poor league yes but in form no way, we’ve played shite the last half dozen games.

    Big difference!

But we have still been winning. Do you expect us to batter teams every week. Doesnt work like that im afraid.

Shite first half, decent second half and only really started to play when they had a player sent off, not the best of games, Wimbledon not up to much. Some good goals though.

    Are you ever happy??

Top of the league and still people are having a dig. Only in Wigan.

    Only certain members

How come the cherubs cannot play every week yet whenever a lucrative pre season tour of the USA or the Far East is on the table wild horses couldn’t keep them from going.

You asked earlier what the difference is between players nowadays and players who played every game in the past, and the answer is Sports Science.

Most players would play every single game if they could – as was the case in the past. It’s not them demanding a rest, it’s the sports scientists.

When players get to this level, they’re all of a similar standard, so it’s all about fine margins, and if a manager thinks he can get an edge on his opponents by resting his players and keeping them fresh and knock-free, he’ll do it.

When you get to the level, stature and age of someone like Rooney, then they might request some time off, but your average Wigan players is told when they are playing and when they are resting.

Bear in mind between now and New Year’s Day, they have five games to play – including one against Shrewsbury, so Cook’s more than likely resting players in anticipation of the busy Christmas schedule, rather than because they’re tired.
Got no problem with certain changes Standish but 8 in an important game is too excessive. The main problem I have is that the top clubs in the Prem have 25 top international players of real quality so rotation can be really beneficial. At our level we do not have that quality throughout the squad so in big games league or cup we must go with a strong side to get the job done. What really gets my goat is that lower league clubs are following the lead of the big boys coz its the trend and not because they have the resources to rotate. I also agree its down to the managers and not the players who have exasperated this phenomenon. None of this however detracts from the fact that we should not be gambling so much in a game of importance as last nights was. Obviously the league is our priority but our best players should be able to cope with the games that come thick and fast. They always have in the past.
I get what you’re saying about squad sizes – and rotation not being suited to lower league teams, but I think the issue here is, you saw the game as being much more important that Cook did.

Personally, I wouldn’t have been heartbroken if we’d been knocked out last night, and I suspect Cook felt the same.

Realistically, we’re not going to win the FA Cup as a third tier team, and promotion is pretty much the be all and end all this season, so if we lost one of our vital players to injury or suspension against Fylde in an extra match we didn’t really need and it derailed our promotion bid, then Cook would be under the spotlight.
Basically what i said on page 1 of this thread. Sounds like we’re on the same page.

Ok guys & gals. Supposing we played a full strength team last night from walton/jones right through to grigg, & the likes of burn, byrne, jacobs, morsy & grigg as examples picked up very serious injuries. And, lets say for arguments sake, those injuries put those players out for the rest of the season. This would then result in fringe players, who many on here claim to be not good enough, getting regular starts & hence, our promotion push goes t*ts up.

Our goal this season is to WIN promotion from league 1, NOT (sad i know) the FA cup. Yes it would be nice to progress as far as we can. I believe that where fylde gave their all in both games against us, i believe that we too will give our all against bournemouth, & who knows, produce a giant killing result. Its the FA cup, & giant killing is part & parcel of it. Had fylde won last night, i would have been the first to congratulate them.

Can’t remember who has already said it, but i agree with them that our main focus this season is promotion & not the cup(s).

It’s not over yet but it does suggest some of our fringe players just aren’t good enough.

    Soon be january grumps.

The only players i can think of who had this contractual thing of having to play, was bogdan, who thankfully got injured & had to return, & the godawful excuse of a goalie we had from stoke.

Cook did state that if jones had have been fit, he would have played.

Cook does what Sharpe tells him to do, simple as that, just the same as Yootha did last season with the goalkeeping debacle, same shit different shovel!
I would love to know where you get your information from.
