Like I have said many times, some of our fans hanker for the old days of basement football with fuck all attendances! ‘Little Wigan’ mentality!

No not at all fil. A lot of our fans have been with this club for a very long time. As a result they know where the club has come from. This does not mean they want to return to the third/fourth/non-league tier, far from it. I hated being relegated, but i just get on with it. I’ll still be there next season as will many. But as i say, most true fans accept who we are as a club.

& lets be honest. Without whelan we would not have gone on our incredible journey & thus, attracting fans like yourself who have only been with us a short time. Fans like yourself who thought this premier league thing would last forever.

One example. When we got into the premier league, i remember bumping into a bloke in the local shop with a latics shirt on. Ah! 2 people in runcorn as latics fans i thought. I got chatting to him. Turns out he is/was a liverpool fan but couldn’t get tickets for anfield. So “tagged on” to latics. 12 years on from 2005, i see that bloke on occassions & surprise, surprise he has gone back to wearing his liverpool shirt.

Yes! I’m afraid we are a little club. We always will be unless a billionaire buys the club & takes us on a journey of winning several EPL titles, cups etc..

Sorry fil. But we are wigan athletic. IMO you need to accept who we are.

Anything up to the £250 mark would be acceptable, but I think we might be looking at renewals being similar to this year.
I think new incentives should be looked at, perhaps a 5 or 10 game ticket for the floaters and those that can’t go every week and find on the day prices too expensive.
We should certainly be looking at cutting pay on the day prices as that has put loads off recently.

Audience in the East/South looked very thin today
Do you sit in the west stand, cos that looked thin from the east stand.

Nathan Jones nailed on!

What’s his links to wigan though, as Lostock said he had some links?
So it’s Adkins then?
Adkins has played for us. I thought the clue was he hasn’t played for us but has WAFC connections.

There is only one man to take the helm. Only one man could possibly begin to sort out the HUGE mess that has been left now. Wigan Athletic can’t buy their way up next season so the players that are there and will be coming in need motivation. A man who isn’t afraid of what people think or try and dictate to him. That man is Roy Keane. There shouldn’t even be any other name in the frame. If The Latics want to survive then Keane needs appointing and given longevity.

You’ve a good point there Yosser…Roy Keane would be an excellent choice. We can but hope.

Back to reality, we’ve more chance of getting his namesake Steve, whose tactical prowess makes Yootha Joyce look like Bill Shankly.
After reading his autobiography, he doesn’t seem too bothered about what league he is in as long as he is challenged. There is no bigger challenge around at the moment in terms of potential, stadium and facilities etc its all there if somebody can get them back up. A couple of things he alludes to in his book are how he has turned down big money moves in terms of playing and management because of 1. The challenge wasn’t enough and 2. He couldn’t uproot his family from Manchester so when he was in the Sunderland job he struggled to adapt because he was so far away from home and his family. He wasn’t concerned about his salary but was more interested in an incentive bonus. 1m quid for promotion. Thats what drives him on. The challenge to be successful. He is out of club management and could continue in his role with Ireland and he is 20 mins away. I think he would jump at the chance. I very much doubt the club have the balls to make such an appointment though. A born winner.
So this is the same Keane who has a caustic personality, who could start an argument in an empty room, who fell out with entire Irish coaching staff, caused all the Sunderland players to celebrate when he resigned as manager, and was an abject failure and eventually sacked as Ipswich manager?

Oh, and he once kicked up a fuss and wrote about it in his newspaper column when one of the girls at the DW ticket office didn’t recognise him and wouldn’t sell him a ticket?

Yep. Perfect for the job!
TBH standish i think he would be perfect & the job at wigan would be the challenge he might be looking for. As for causing arguments, is this because he has passion & committment as well as not being a yes man.

Whelan is now long in the tooth & too old to run a club.

Sharpe is young & inexperienced. To gain experience, not just at a football club, but life in general, one must learn from one’s mistakes. I think sharpe will have learned fast from this.

I can honestly say hand on heart that none of us have been entertained this season. It has been cr@p TBF. I would love to go to games every week, but can’t due to work. I’m going sunday as it will be my first game in a month. I go to watch my team whenever i get the chance. No matter how exciting or dross the football is, i can’t wait to get to the stadium to see MY team – a team who next season i will have been supporting for 40 years.

Get behind your team through good times & bad.

I said it before fil on another thread in a slightly different way, but you sir are NOT a real fan/supporter.

And, what is it exactly you expect from a club like wigan athletic???

Well don’t know about Phil but I would expect them to at least hold their own and compete in this league and not the shambolic shite we’ve had to endure this season.I wouldn’t complain about us going down if we at least had a go at staying up.

I won’t be there on Sunday either – if its a nice day I’ll be doing me garden.

I guess that makes me a shit supporter as well.

I’ll live – and have a clear concience.

Enjoy it – if you can ……………
In my book yes! As i said in my last post. This bad period is when the club needs us the most. Supporting a football club is for life not just for FA cups.

in reply to: Almost forgot we have a game on Sunday…. #158628
What a sad thread this is and it seems to show some of our fans, even long term ones, as being more than spoilt. I don’t think any club has given it’s supporters more value for money over the years than Wigan Athletic, but a crap season and you can’t see people for dust. Every team has lousy season, most teams have more lousy seasons than we do. Just man up you soft sods.

Well said “The Otter”.

As i say, i seriously do not know what people expect from “little” wigan athletic. Yes! It has been a bad season, a sh1t season even. But IMO, this is when the club needs us the most.

Thing is, were not a big club. We are a Rochdale/Bury that has been on a big journey. Years ago Stockport and Tranmere made it to what is now called The Championship and it was our wildest dreams that we could emulate them and get that far up the pyramid. We did eventually but we are still a relatively small club.
Look where those aforementioned clubs journey has taken them now.
We should thank our lucky stars Dave has given us some great moments but at times we should eat a little humble pie, take a reality check, have gratitude for being as high in the system as league one and enjoy our little club taking on the football establishment and big clubs with or without a massive financial backing.

I agree 100% with your post donny.

My worry is that as we once were a premier league team who won a major cup, people IMO still expect that. We are indeed a small club as you say on the ilk of those said teams & people need to realise this. We had a fantastic journey that those said clubs would have loved to have gone on. And, the likes of tranmere & stockport tried to go on but ended up in non league.

Yes, admittedly, this season has been sh1t – we all know it has. But, lets be grateful for what we have had & have still got.

I hope to god its not barrow (no offence to a latics legend), but i just can’t see it TBH.

in reply to: Fair Play ?? #158553

I’ll still renew if caldwell is re-instated. In a way, it is of no concern who the manager is/who the players are, this is still my club & i made a personsl promise to support it until the day i die.

I personally can’t see them asking caldwell again following his less than successful stint at chesterfield. Rosler! I’m not too sure. But i don’t think he would want to return if i’m being honest.

in reply to: Fair Play ?? #158551

I can fully understand where you are coming from JR. Apart from 1 or 2 games maybe i do not recall getting hammered by any team, & certainly, has no team worried me this season.

As you say, individual errors have cost us in games & as nuneaton says, 22 games without scoring is a concern.

I disagree in saying grigg is our best player. I personally do not think the championship is (& a few others) his level. If he stays he & bogle will run riot next season IMO.

The problem for me goes right back to the start of the season. Whatever happened behind the scenes to allow the likes of pearce, morsy, mccann et al to leave/go out on loan is mystifying. & caldwell is to blame for that. However, I do think his sacking was a tad too early & i believe he was turning it around, like he did in league 1. The appointment of joyce which i was looking forward to at the time with his promise of free flowing football, was one of THE biggest disasters this club has ever made. Barrow was on a no win situation since taking over.

I seriously hope mr sharpe (& jackson) have learned valuable lessons. I was expecting a mid to lower finish this season.

My other worry is for next season. If things are not going right at the very beginning i seriously hope supporters do not walk away & turn their backs on the club. I won’t. But you know how fickle some on here can be.

in reply to: Pre Season Starts NOW! It has to. #158536
I don’t know if the club read this board, but if they do, then I hope they take heed of this post!
The preparation for next season has to start NOW. Because we are up in the air manager wise, and quite rightly, we should now wait and see just who is available and looking for a new challenge at the seasons end, it has to be up to someone else to at least plan some kind of pre season programme out, regarding friendlies and training camp plans.
Forget the likes of United and Liverpool bringing fringe teams here, those are an absolute waste of time. As are playing the likes of Macclesfield and Chester, which will provide us with nothing useful to see where we are at and how we shape up. I’d be more inclined to aim for games against such likes as Preston, Huddersfield and Sheffield United, this seasons league one champions, to see how we fair. We need ‘competitive’ friendlies this summer. I think we were too cocky and blasé about things last summer. We thought we were better than we are. I’d also like us to go back to an Austria training camp, play a couple of games out there against foreign opposition.
But somebody at the club is going to have to get to work on this NOW! We can’t wait until a new manager comes in, because it might only be end of June and it’ll be too late then. JONATHAN JACKSON, it’s over to you to get these things planned!

Next season will be ‘driven’ by our preparations over the summer. We have to get the pre season spot on and get the ball rolling so we hit the ground running in August. I’d also start pre season training a week or two earlier than usual, concentrating on nothing but fitness (plenty running and fit tests) for those two weeks, before the balls are brought into training. If we start off the season fitter and leaner than other sides in league one, then that’s one advantage, before ability even comes into play.

We can dissect this season and be miserable about it until the cows come home….or we can look ahead and work towards addressing the situation and turning ourselves into WINNERS again.

We are ALL in this together! Roll on August.

And if you can do all that, you will be a man my son.

In all honesty vat, a very positive & upbeat post.
