Careful. Whelan and Cook are best buddies don’t you know!
May Brenda live long and prosper.
in the fifties and we would have been in the Cheshire leagueLancashire Combination I think.
I reckon that Newcastle match in 1954 must have been the biggest difference in league positions.
So many but here’s a few of mine.
Championship against Reading 2005
No need to explain thatThose home games against Norwich and Hull in 1987 which saw us get to the quarter-final of the FA Cup and lose to Leeds.
How did Bobby Campbell miss that header?Freight Rover Final against Brentford 1985
We played them off the park when everyone else including Screen Sport – who did the TV coverage – thought we were there to make up the numbers.FA Cup against Birmingham 1978
Although we lost 4-0 we played some great football which won us lots of votes and got us elected to the league.FA Cup against Man City 1971
Fairytale stuff which nearly, but not quite, came true. Not sure about the players on the bus but take a look at the 4 civvies immediately above the Latics scarf being held aloft. On the left of the 4 is a fella who looks Jim McDonald off Corrie. Next to him is a bird sporting a dark bob. To the left of the 4 is a young lad and blow me down if the other fella (clapping) isn’t Alan Partridge.
A-ha! ;)
They say fashion has a habit of coming around again.
Let’s hope not eh!its not davey breen i dont think – but are you serious about being the one with the big tach and scarf – because i know him and the 2 lads to his right but i cant for the life of me think of there names.ernie do you know what event that was celebrating ?
I think it was something to do with playing Scarborough at Wembley that year; the first time Latics had got there.
Probably a welcome home parade, even though we lost in extra time.
Happy days ….

Happy days indeed.Les Rigby and Ian Gillibrand I recognise, but who’s the other chap?
I don’t think Zaki endeared himself to anyone at the club, not just the tea lady. He had a handful of decent games, got peas-above-sticks and caused disruption. Leave well alone.
Trust me, Adebayor will not get a regular run in the City team. This is because I paid £10.5m for him in our fantasy football league. Since then, he got banned for that daft goal celebration, has been out injured for weeks, his form deserted him and he has barely survived an assassination attempt. My joy at his potential early return from the African Nations Cup is tempered by the nailed on certainty that on his return to England he will either a) be seated next to a more competent underpant bomber than the guy who went to Detroit, b) fall down the steps of the plane and break his leg, c) be arrested and imprisoned for drug smuggling, or d) be the next surprise addition to the Celebrity Big Brother House.
Don’t think there was much of a celebration in front of the gunners on Friday though.
11 January 2010 at 7:53 pm in reply to: Latics attendances given another slant by the Daily Mail #17889we are all different.I’m not……!
Maybe there’s a clause in his contract that says he can only be transferred to a club which play in red and white stripes?
Stop moaning, tha’d a bin alreet in trenches wi me, in ’17.Been round the stadium tonight; perfectly passable. Not a patch on the Boxing Day ice.
Not nearly as bad as Christmas Day 1915. Can’t believe that match went ahead.
Gents
Whilst it is correct that Jack Walker was a true fan of Blackburn (and a gentleman to boot according to my father who was a director of a Blackburn company for thirty odd years), and Whelan probably invested in Wigan Athletic for egotistical or business reasons, Walker’s legacy to Blackburn is not an ongoing fairytale.
Bear in mind that nobody envisaged the future meteoric rise of the English game back in the early nineties. The average player’s salary is now over £1 million, and Blackburn’s English record of £6 million (Sutton) for a player is small change these days. That can’t exactly be attributed to inflation.
Sorry for posting a link but..according to the Guardian link below, Walker spent £97 million of his own money on Rovers. Whelan has spent at least £60 million of his own money which isn’t bad for a non-fan.
You’ll also see in the article that Walker’s funding has now run out.

Whelan, the man is a toad. Whelan the football club chairman however, is the reason the club is in the Premier League – no matter which way you look at it. Who else would have invested that amount of money in Wigan Athletic at the time?
It’s not a case of rose tinted glasses; it’s appreciation. Until I win the Euro Lottery rollover jackpot four times and have sufficient money to buy the club and bankroll it, I’ll be thankful of Whelan.
If he did sell up, and take as much money as he could with him, could you blame him? I bet his office has not exactly been inundated with letters of gratitude over recent years.
i think we are all in agreement with what he has done for us, that is not being questioned.
It’s now and the future that is worrying us.
Will he invest, to at least maintain the status quo, or will he continue to strip our assets now he no longer needs Wigan Athletic to boost his personal standing in the community etc.[/quote]
Maybe the Wigan public also need to invest in Wigan Athletic. How can you question our defensive coaching…..Barrow turned Altrincham and Bury into a tight back line….give him time.. :)So that makes him well qualified for the job he’s now doing then?
You can call me Michael Fish but I reckon all the ice and snow will have gone by Saturday. The match will definately be on.
Why do people insist on using “fact” to follow a manifestly unquantifiable subjective comment?Dictionaries all round please, Santa
I don’t think people do it on purpose. Noboby likes to be proved wrong and so tend to present their opinion as fact. It’s human nature.
The only except of course is me….!
