I just wished that a little honesty would be used instead of bullshit like wanting to be near Notts. FFS I travelled further as a fan every home game even in the 90s when things were dire. Mostly I would come straight from work. If the lad wants away and go to another club then just say that of if the club wants to reduce the wage bill then be upfront about it. Fans will respect it more. Buxton will be a Brewer before the season starts.

I get where you are coming from NL, but if you had to make that trip 4-5 times a week it may be a bit less fancy able.
Its part of the job today jr the travelling. Many players and managers travel many miles per week so they can live in the place of their preference. I just think its a lame excuse on the lads part and would rather him be honest. Nobody can blame him if he wants to play in the championship and he would probably have preferred to go to Burton last season had they paid the money for him so I wish him well despite being disappointed he has left.
You’re right, commuting is part of life, but if he has a young family, I understand where he’s coming from.

I struggle with time to fit in my kids’ sports and school activities, and I only commute to and from Cheadle, so it must be a nightmare to try and do that if you’re in Wigan and the rest of the family are in Nottingham.

He was born and raised in East Midlands, and has only played for East Midlands clubs prior to Wigan, so it was probably a wrench for him to move out of the area.

I remember David Unsworth doing something similar in the 90s when he left Everton for West Ham, but his family didn’t like London, so they moved back up North and he signed for Villa, but he then found the commute too much and he resigned for Everton.

In this case I don’t think it has anything do to with wanting to play in the Championship – as he was being paid more at Wigan than Burton could offer him anyway. I think it is him genuinely wanting to go back to where his family is.

Don’t worry there will be plenty more leaving. All of them wanting to be close to family or unhappy. Who is next? Why could the chairman just not be honest and say there was going to be a clear out.

    Why should he?

The new manager has come in, and maybe doesn’t like what he sees in Buxton. Or maybe they’re actually telling the truth and Buxton can’t be arse driving all the way from Nottinghamshire every day for training.

Either way, if the club think it’s best for the morale of the other players, or if they don’t want to alert other clubs that they’ll be offloading players cheaply, that’s up to them.

They’ve already said publically they’d like to keep the nucleus of the team – but ultimately it’ll be Paul Cook who decides who he does and doesn’t want.

Buxton 2 years left on contract im sure they could have got something better than nothing in this situation regarding our finances
I just think its madness to give away players that way

Burton wanted him but were never going to pay – considering they tried to get him on a free last year, and he wasn’t exactly in demand.

    in reply to: Gilks #159873

I think some are reading too much into this.
It appears that he was, for whatever reason, unsettled. Perhaps he felt that he wasn’t necessarily going to be first choice keeper, and therefore preferred to move on.
The lad Walton who we are being linked with, is an England U21 keeper who has had a couple of successful loan spells elsewhere, including one at Luton. I’m trusting Paul Cook with this, as he will have faced him last season. Paul can bring in as many players as he likes if he is going off players he has seen who have impressed him. It’s what managers do! The problem with Joyce was he was bringing in players who had looked good at youth level, yet had actual limited league experience. The step up in class to first team football was the problem.

Walton is being chased by 3 or 4 clubs, which is a good sign. Hopefully we can get him. We may already have him, given Gilks departure.

The problem is vat its another loan signing and our own player has left. Loan deals come with conditions as we found to our cost last season and a loanee can always be recalled by his parent club if they suffer with injuries. We don’t know what the conditions will be but it will obviously be in Brighton’s favour so is it not a risk. Bring him in by all means but Gilks needs to be replaced with a permanent signing as well.
That Al Habsi lad was a decent loan we got from Bolton a few years ago….

I don’t think we’re in a position to be paying for a keeper that’s up to the standard that Cook wants – so a loan is probably the best option.

As Vat said earlier, it’s likely that Cook will want to play the ball out from the back and Gilks isn’t that type of keeper – so would only be a back-up, which clearly, he doesn’t want to be.

I’m Scouse and wouldn’t want the job for a big clock (as my Nan used to say)

    Ah, that explains it.

I just thought you had a speech impediment.

Where is Buxton’s home town? Barcelona? Venice? Surely on the money we pay him he could live anywhere in this country and play for us.
Move to own town is a bullshit term for letting a player go to save a Championship salary.

Average League One salary is around £100k

    It’s not mega bucks.

    in reply to: Gilks #159818

To let him go at all would be stupid. Has to be number 1.

You would have thought so wouldn’t you especially after the keeper faux pas of last season. Can’t get my head round this one.
I suspect Cook has a new Number 1 on the way, meaning Gilks would drop to the bench – which I’m guessing he doesn’t want to do.

That’s what I’m hoping is happening anyway.

i think some of you are letting time cloud your judgement a bit – Harry Maguire was one of the few bright spots that season & performed really well during his time here. Maybe not £17mill well, but good nonetheless.

At the time he’d been frozen out of the picture following his move from Sheff Utd & there were plenty wondering whether Latics may even be able to keep him.

I’ve seen absolutely nowt of him since his time at Latics but I have heard numerous pundits on talksport last season banging on about how good he was

    Agreed 100%

McGuire and Kim Bo-Kyung were the stand-out players of that season.

    in reply to: Bogle #159788
He did get a mention in the January transfer rumours but no it’s just me, I’ve been championing him for the long standing ‘much needed suitable central striker’ role and a poster over on ours* works with a Latic who reckons he’s Sh**e

I’m not his biggest fan to be honest with you.

Granted, we were poor and he got little service, but his positioning and awareness of his team mates were woeful in my opinion.

Hopefully it will improve with coaching and playing with better players, but I’d already been warned by a Grimsby fan at work that he’d probably struggle in a higher league, and as his confidence wanes, he’ll start missing good chances – and his prediction seem to be pretty accurate from what I saw last season.

As Tyldesley Latic says, the jury’s still out on him.

I am in the ‘ABE’ club. Anybody But England.

I might be getting on abit these days but I just don’t get it.
I especially hate the guts of Raheem Sterling. He epitomises the tossers. Whatever happened to us having players called Stan, Billy, Bobby etc?
Bit racist
Trying to work out why that was racist.
Talking about Raheem Sterling and saying what happened to names like Stan Billy Bobby. No mention of Eric Joe Gary or Harry, just Raheem.
I bet you think the milky bar kid is a member of the KKK.
I’m not saying it was the original poster’s intent, but I can see why someone might think that there are some racist overtones in what was said.
I don’t like Raheem Sterling, but if I was to say that he epitomised what is wrong with the modern English footballer my explanation may be a little longer than asking what happened to names like Bobby, Stan & Billy.
What has his name got to do with anything?
Yeah. Prob not what he intented but picking on one of two guys with a “non english name” wont help with that comment.

Like saying “local lads” when Mooeen Alli and Adil Rasheed get picked for the cricket team.
Include Eoin Morgan in that!

Younger voters favoured Corby…older voters favoured May.

Life’s good when you’re young until you have to pay for it…

Tax and borrow today and you’ll pay tomorrow.

More than twice as many people in Wigan voted Labour than voted Conservative.

    So that’s not true.

You make it sound as though a couple of top clubs were after Dunkley (Forest and Birmingham) and we should be grateful for his signature.

Don’t forget Forest and Birmingham only escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth, last season those two were has bad as us! I cant imagine why this lad didnt make the step up to the Championship if he had the chance or did Forest and Brum lose interest?

They did only just escape relegation, but they are still in a league above us and are bigger clubs.

What I’m getting at is, he was obviously on the radar of other clubs – and is obviously rated highly enough for them to be enquiring about him.

    in reply to: Cheyenne #159642

Thought we’d signed an Indian tribe, but it was Chey Dunkley. Young upcoming defender, does that mean he is one for the bench?

He’ll be a starter. Highly rated.
By who?, some fans reckon he’s not the best ball player more of a straight forward get rid defender. To be highly rated you need both attributes
Say’s who?

A defender’s job is to defend. If you can play the ball out – then it’s bonus.

Dan Burn came with the reputation of being a liability and a hoof-merchant at Fulham, and that didn’t turn out too badly did it?

Forget what some of the Oxford fans are saying about him. That’s what fans do when a player leaves your club for one of your league rivals.

He was linked to Birmingham and Forest before we signed him, and this lad seems to rate him:

They pretty much had free reign with Haworth as the target man. That was our best football for me and I’d have liked to have seen Mathias take it on in 99/00. Didn’t turn out too bad in the end.

Our problem with 1 up top is that the wide players and centre mids don’t help the striker enough and it leaves him like a fish out of water.

Would Bogle make a good Lee McCulloch mark 2? Shove him wide and use his strength and pace there to free space up for Grigg and offer an outlet at the back post.

If you’re quoting pace, he definitely won’t be McCulloch mark 2!

For all of Lee’s attributes, pace was not one of them!
