I did a gig in the Belle Vue on Saturday so was among the Rugby lot and to be honest I was amazed as to how vitriolic Warriors fans are towards R L opponents as well as other sports fans. Every time Leeds had possession the often vile comments had me scratching my head. I am not a fan of either code but it certainly comes across if what I witnessed at the weekend is the norm is that Union is far more civilised. I have watched football for 40 odd years and can honestly say that I have never said or heard some of the stuff I did. Yes it was alcohol fuelled and yes it was a highly charged game but for fans to wish serious injury to opposing players is a bit naughty. Please don’t think this is just a rant at Warriors fans just because I’m blue thru and thru, it isn’t. I have always avoided being in the RL environment but couldn’t get out of it Saturday so I always thought that Warriors fans were ok and most I would imagine are indeed. The ones I was amongst let the club down badly.

On a lighter note, when Wigan took the lead I had a playlist ready including “We are the champions” needless to say I was happy to make a new one at the final whistle

Union IS far more civilised!

I didn’t say his tactics were idiotic I just thought his tactics in-play could have been a little better! To twice relinquish a lead and then to ultimately get beat is bad in anyone’s books. With a couple of tweaks here and there I personally think that the defeat could have been avoided but being bereft of a ‘Plan B’ was always Bob’s achilles heel! Hey but I’m no manager and so my opinion means jack shit! As for Caldwell, I wouldn’t have risked him, I would have played Jones who was well up to the task of playing at the back, anyone but Caldwell who later came back to fuck up our play-offs in The Championship and then contributed to our FA Cup semi final defeat against Arsenal, he is now our manager! You can’t make shit like this up can you!
As for Golobart, signed by Martinez as ‘A Future Talent’, currently lying in the ‘Where Are They Now’ files, well the Spanish third tier to be precise!

The same Gary Caldwell who scored that important winning goal at Anfield that sparked our revival, and whose chest thumping and leading by example was instrumental in our 2012 ‘Great Escape’ and him collecting the ‘Player of The Year’ award? You’re right, you can’t make it up! ;)

As for that game v Swansea, the issue was at centre half, and David Jones has never played centre half to my knowledge. Therefore, the only centre half on the bench that day was Golobart – who by all accounts, was even less fit to play than Caldwell.

So Martinez, in the most important league game of the season, is down to two fully fit recognised centre halves and brings in the recovering club captain / last season’s ‘Player of The Year’ (who sets one goal up with a brilliant ball through the middle, but later fluffs a clearance to allow Swansea to equalise) and he is blamed for ‘idiotic tactics’?

Nah, sorry, I’m not having that!

but also all those idiotic tactical decisions that relegated us

And what tactical idiotic decisions might they be oh “Special One”.
Swansea at home wasn’t his finest hour I must admit! Perhaps Donny is referring to that proverbial nail in the coffin?
But where was the idiotic tactical decision in that game?

We were leading twice in that game, and unless Martinez instructed Caldwell to fluff his clearance, then I don’t see how he can be blamed.

It also portrays the journo as someone who really should have done his homework before looking for someone to blame for English RU’s epic failure. Not knowing Bradford, Sheffield, Salford & London are cities in England is pretty basic stuff!

Inaccuracies regarding the number of cities with RL clubs aside, it’s an interesting article and I find a lot of truth in it.

I played League at school but chose to play Union at weekends and did so into adulthood. My eldest son now plays Union.

Most of the other dads who watch their boys playing on Sunday mornings are a mixed bunch of ex-Union and ex-League players, but they all watch both codes and also watch football.

And when you visit other clubs, even if they haven’t played League, they’ll still watch it, and likewise football.

With my League supporting mates however, it’s completely different. Many of them can’t stand football (calling it wendyball, puffball etc) and would point-blank refuse to watch any game of Union (calling that yawnion, kick n clap, rah-rah etc).

It’s pure bitterness.

So what this writer is alluding to, I think, is spot on.

And he’s hardly trying to blame England RU’s failure on anything to do with Rugby League – confirmed in his paragraph:

‘When one of the greatest individuals to have played the league code…was characterised as a cause of English failings, it confirmed every preconceived notion about the southern toffs’ game….As perceived acts of betrayal go, the Burgess business has not been far behind the French rugby union collaborating with the Nazi puppet Vichy regime to stamp out league during the Second World War.’

You reading it as an another Union writer trying to blame League, confirms to me that you, like a lot of other League supporters, need to grow thicker skin if you want your sport to grow in popularity.

How can we ever forget those amazing scenes when we lifted the cup but also all those idiotic tactical decisions that relegated us and all those statements about loving our club so much. Bob created the bad feeling by entering into the swap triangle probably before the season was anywhere near finishing. If only he had just seen getting Latics back into the Premier League as important as getting Everton into the Champions League or could I be wrong and it wasn’t about ambition but more about becoming a bigger millionaire than what Latics had already made him. This thread should never end. Thank you LHL who incidently at one time was a major fan of Bob but an even greater fan of WAFC. His football was shit by the way. Boring shit.Apart from about twenty games in his entire time here. Boring shite!!!

Most of that is your opinion though isn’t it? I prefer football played on the ground and obviously didn’t find it as boring as you did.

I doubt Martinez left Wigan just for the money. He left because his career at Wigan would be forever about avoiding relegation and making ends meet, whereas Everton are a bigger club and capable of more. So basically it was career advancement.

Plus, if he had stayed with us for another season, he’d have missed the chance of taking the Everton job.

Rumours were that at one time Whelan intervened on Bobby’s tactics and Graham Jones took temporary control, started playing football and kept us up in 2012. That was just a rumour though but what did happen was we started playing football and stayed up. We have players capable of playing that way but the decision is Garys as to when he does. At the moment it seems to be when we are losing but who knows things could start looking better when DLA Davies and Grigg are back.

What complete and utter twaddle!

Is Waghorn not proving himself at a higher level?

No!

He’s playing for a huge club but against non-league standard players.

in reply to: Great judge of forwards.. #145120
our club has become…Leon Clarke hits his 9th for Bury .Delort scores only goal for Caen to move them up to 3rd in French Prem,Waghorn having a field day in Scotland( Rangers would still dick us ) but granted that league is poor. Will we ever have a 20+ goal forward again or were Elington /Roberts the last ?Is it also partly because of the style of play we have adopted ,or just crap judgement ???

Did you not see Clarke play last season? He looked less potent than Fortune – and that really is an achievement.

When Caldwell took over he sent him back to Wolves because he was a trouble maker, and I’d suggest that 19 clubs in 11 years speaks volumes, plus his scoring record for most clubs has been woeful.

Delort, I didn’t rate as looked full of tricks and flicks but far too lightweight for the English game. His penchant for tweeting shirtless selfies and, by all accounts, his out-of-kilter ability to ego balance didn’t go down well at the club.

Waghorn was a decent player, but we couldn’t afford to keep him. He’s doing so well in Scotland because Rangers average 40,000 for home games and sign players from Wigan Athletic whilst other clubs average 2,000 and sign players from Barrow, Hayes & Yeading and Edinburgh University.

To put a bit of perspective on it: Rangers have scored 31 league goals this season – nearly 3 times more than any other team, and Waghorn has got 11 of those goals so far, but 7 of them have been penalties.

So basically, he’s got 4 from open play for one of Britain’s biggest clubs against non-league standard players.

Although I’d expect Rangers to beat us if they played us, I reckon it’d be a lot closer that you’re giving them credit for because other than the top 6 in the SPL, the standard in Scotland is pretty poor.

Mcann and junior why do u think Dorothy perkins and power are creative they r like a static caravan

Perkins isn’t creative and wasn’t bought as a creative midfielder.

His job is to win the ball back and give it to the creative players.

There’s a saying that for a piano concert you need 1 piano player and 10 piano carriers. Perkins is one of the piano carriers.

No convinced with Power though.

A great attendance really but such a shame that we were treated to such garbage. A negative set up with snails pace build ups, passing sideways, backways and to Milwall players. Yawn a minute stuff. Malky, Uwe and Coyle were booed off for better performances and approaches to games than this. Points thrown away in the name of dreadfully football. If Gary wants to play this yawn a minute rubbish 7991 will seem very good indeed.

Garbage? Harsh. The problem we have is a lack of real quality. Or confidence, maybe. Almost all of the players need more than one touch and the first touch is usually backwards or sideways which takes the momentum out of a move. That, along with a dearth of forward players making runs and space, is a bit of a problem right now.

Jacobs and Grigg look like they have some quality and their first touches show that with things seeming to happen once they get the ball.

I think the players look hungry and they do bust a gut and I think they can only get better.
Agree.

We looked comfortable for three quarters of the game (although we struggled with the final ball) and didn’t deserve to be drawing – let alone losing – when their second went in.

Our goals scored is comparable with most teams in the league, it’s the goals against stat that is costing us, and throwing another striker on isn’t going to sort that out no matter what donnys page keeps blathering on about.

Junior made a big difference when he came on as he’s a complete different type of midfielder to the three we had playing in the middle for most of the game.

Not the best of matches, but by no mean as bad as some of the drama queens who come on here are making out.

in reply to: Tav and Wags #144996
I’m yet to be convinced about Grigg.
First impressions are that he’s a bit lightweight, loses the ball too much and doesn’t show much composure in front of goal. Runs about a lot though, which will always score him brownie points with fans.

I like the look of him. Makes some decent runs and clearly can score goals – as he’s already proven in this division.

Reminds me of more robust version of Boselli.

in reply to: Craig Davies #144986
No to Billy McKay

Don’t give up on Davies yet, as big an impact I’ve seen from a player at Latics for a long time in those early games. Plenty of options once all fit.

Where are we at for tonight though? Would hope to see at least Grigg or Davies on to give us a chance.

Agree totally.

Hasn’t the loanee from Spurs with the daft haircut come back?

I was impreessed with the brief appearances he’s made thus far.

in reply to: Tav and Wags #144985
Well I reckon that if we still had Waghorn he would be our best option up front, on saying that it doesn’t mean he would get picked! Tavernier would walk into that right wingback position as well but they have both gone and so it’s all theoretical ! Despite who or where they ply their trade now I personally think that they would stand out as good players in League One and both of them are better than all who have replaced them here!
As a footnote, let’s not forget what division James McArthur and James McCarthy plied their trade in,a division that they stood out in with the latter turning out to be one of the best midfielders in the Prem! Both Wags and Tav are currently stand out players in that same division and I believe they will also stand out in the SPL. It’s all about utilising them and working on their strengths rather than having them sit on a bench week in week out or sending them packing on loan somewhere! More fool us I say but like I said, it’s all notional now so bollocks to it!

Disagree totally there Phil.

I think both Davies and Grigg look much better players than Waghorn.

He was/is a decent player, and better than most of what we had last season, but Grigg is a very good striker for this level and in my opinion, Davies has looked streets ahead of any striker we’ve had since Kone.

Waghorn has scored 14 for Rangers this season and as great as that is, don’t forget 7 of them have been penalties, and 3 of his 7 goals from open play came against the might of Greenock Morton!

When Rangers lost to St Johnstone recently, quite a few Rangers fans commented that it had been a wake-up call for them with regards to how big the gap between SFL and SPL actually is, and Waghorn was kept extremely quiet by a mediocre SPL defence.

Tavernier on the other hand is totally different. All I’ve spoken to rate him highly and think he’ll be a big hit in the SPL.

in reply to: Tav and Wags #144949
A quick whizz round Twitter says the Rangers fans are more than happy with our cast offs, a good number literally pissing themselves that they got them both for 400k

Always makes me chuckle when folk say they weren’t good enough because the likes of Malky McKay didn’t like them in training. Brenda Spencer could have done better than Malky.

Good result today, but the same people, still jhave the same opinion.

Tavernier is a very good player but they’re not 100% sure if Waghorn will be good enough for the SPL.

They’re hoping for something a bit better for next season.

in reply to: Tav and Wags #144887

The general consensus from Rangers fans I know is that Tavernier is a fantastic player who’ll do well in the SPL if they get promoted, but Waghorn needs too many chances before he converts one – so basically, he’s decent but not brilliant.
