I’m not alluding to it at all. I have seen nowhere near enough of him to have an opinion as to whether he is good enough at Championship level
I’ve seen him play in the flesh once for Latics reserves against Liverpool in 11/12 & he was awful. I saw bits if Northampton’s play off games last season & he played really well in all of them
Nor am I being pernickety I just fail to see how playing well in League 2 proves in any way shape or form that a player is good enough for the Championship. I’ve already explained how I rate the Northampton fans opinions. Aidy Boothroyd’s comments carry far more weight but still even though he has seen him at close quarters for the best part of a season he doesn’t “know” he is as good as Ben Foster until he makes that step up
It’s a chicken & the egg situation. We won’t know till he does step up. I hope to see him do that it’s just he hasn’t proved anything about his ability at this level yet vtgat’s not being pernickety it’s factIf you’re not alluding to Nicholls being below standard for the Championship, then of course you’re being pernickety:
You are correct in saying Jay’s statement that Nicholl’s has proven he’s good enough for the Championship is not factually correct, but, you are just picking up on the word ‘proven’ – as it isn’t proven, it’s Jay’s opinion.
And likewise, Aidy Boothroyd doesn’t ‘know’ Nicholls is better than Foster – it’s merely his opinion.
If that’s not being pernickety, I don’t know what is!
In my opinion, I think Nicholls will be more than good enough for that level based on the standard of some of the goalkeepers already playing for clubs in the Championship.
But I agree that Nicholls proved last season that he is up this league…
Did he??? When? I thought he was on loan at Northampton Town
I’m not saying that he isn’t good enough or that he shouldn’t be given more of a chance but playing well in the 4th division does not prove you are in any way shape of form good enough for the 2nd division – Lee Butler (after a shaky start) looked a good keeper in the bottom division but I’d never have said he was good enough for the level Latics are at now
No you’re not, but you’re alluding to that – unless you are being particularly pernickety just for the sake of it!Aidy Boothroyd who managed Ben Foster at Watford said of him: “I genuinely think Lee is as good as Ben Foster. He was outstanding,”
To back this up, I speak to a Northampton fan through work, and he claims Nicholls is the best keeper he’s ever seen at that level and we’ll be lucky to keep hold of him.
At the very least, he’s well worth having at a back-up keeper in the Championship in my opinion.
Some bargain basement options…
DL – Fabio (Loan)
DR – Danny Simpson – Free
DC – Titus Bramble – Free
DC – Richard Dunne – Free
RW – David Bentley – Free
STR – Carlton Cole – FreeLooks excellent, maybe we could then rename the team, totallyshite FC?
Out of that lot I’d consider Simpson and Fabio, but I doubt they’d consider us.Bramble – as well as he did for us last he played – would be a disaster.
Coyle’s style of play is more akin to Martinez’s than Bruce’s.
Has Di Santo been snapped up by Barcelona yet? Better be quick before Martinez comes in for him. Didn’t he say that he was good enough to be playing alongside Messi B) Notice he hasn’t come back for our other Barelonaesk player GOMEZ, who he said was as good as Iniesta
You mean Gomez who was included in the Championship Team of The Season for the one season he played in that league, and who now has played in the Premier League for three seasons?
I think we’d be better keeping hold of him.
To be honest I never thought Figueroa or Baines to be good defenders.
How many pictures exist of our early years in the Premier League of a goal being scored with Bainsey on the near post looking baffled, arm outstretched.
Anyone remember Chimbonda at Charlton that first season being absolutely lost as their wingers ran at him?
I have no problems with backs going forward, overlapping down the wing, or whatever. But their primary role is to keep that ball away from the goal – launching it into the proverbial row Z (I’m OK i’m in row T) if necessary.
Completely agree about Figueroa (Didnt he mostly play as a LM for Honduras before he joined us?) and Chimbonda who was always better going forward but I think Baines stats speak in volumes over the past 3 seasons and I am of the opinion he is one of the only players ever to leave us in the PL and actually take his game to another level.
Putting aside he has had the biggest fantasy football points haul out of all premier league defenders for the third season in a row , he created 116 goal scoring opportunities over the course of last season (more than any other player in the top 5 leagues in Europe) and created 8 chances in the Aston Villa game alone (last seasons PL record) He also made 92 succesful tackles last season with only 5 players in the whole of the Premier league completing more tackles.
That last statistic speaks volumes in comparison to all the CB’s, FB’s and hard tackling midfielders in the Premier League but if you look over all his defensive stats he is up there with the best despite his attacking endeavors.
Sorry Salford, I’m with Garswood on this.I always much preferred Steve McMillan to a young Baines.
I’m sure Baines is very much improved these days, but he always looked a bit suspect when defending in my opinion.
For me, Melchiot is the most reliable out and out full back we’ve had in the Premier League.
I see Jonny had his say ! ha ha haOf course. Polite but informative.
Good stuff. I wonder what Coyle thinks about Adrian Lopez. Roberto liked him, but I couldn’t understand that. We can’t be sure about Ramis’ recovery, but he would be superb at that level. Another strong centre half alongside him would do. Owen had Strven Caldwell as his Captain at Burnley, so we know the type of centre back he prefers.
I don’t think it was a case of liking Cladwell, I think it was more of a case of that’s what they could afford.
From what I remember he played well for them too.
Incidentally, I’d have like to have seen Lopez play in the Championship. I liked what I saw of him.
Jonny, if your spelling of Caldwell was a genuine typo and not a sarcastic play on words then it should have been ! Cladwell is perfect because as is with most words in our language they morph over time into other words and so Clodwell is only just around the corner ! In fact, lets skip Cladwell and just go straight to Clodwell ! :cheer:
It was a typo but I like it, and from this day forth, he and his brother shall be known as Clodwell. It has a Wigan tone to it.
With us needing to sign up to 10 players, wouldn’t staying in the UK be the sensible thing to do ?Why stay in the UK? The whole club won’t be going and we live in a world of the virtual office.
It’ll be a free trip and a chance to promote the club and win fans and investment from outside the UK.
I think it’s great news.

Widnes Vikings from the North West Counties – that’s the men we should be playing ;)Bloody rubbish Wiggin.
Trip to the States now arranged, but Morecambe and Oldham cancelled :angry:Not sure I like that – do the club not realise that we’d like to watch the team in England?

That’s what happens when you’re a famous,in-demand, cup winning football team….
He’s gone. Out of contract, along with Golobart, Figgy and Uncle JoeThat’s a pity. He was mint.
If by some miracle Maloney was persuaded to stay, under no circumstances should he be shoved out on the wing. Putting him out there in the Championshiop would be a complete and utter waste.
We obviously dont know what Coyles plans are yet but if push came to shove and he really wanted to play the 4-4-2 you would have to drop Beausajor and play Maloney in a McCulloch type role coming in as a third forward although you would need a strong LB to hold the fort if he is sitting up top alot.
Alternatively I think he could do well playing just behind two strikers but again you would need someone to hold the fort in midfield as with a couple of wingers it would leave us with 5 up front.
Alternatively to that you could play him as one of the two strikers which means pushing Kone up as the front man which IMO is a waste of his better qualities.
If as you say by some miracle we managed to keep hold of him I would like to see us switch between a 4-3-3 and a 4-4-2 at will using Jeany B as a back up plan to get some extra balls in the box if we struggled to break a team down down.
No idea what he’ll do. As Phil has pointed out, none of us are tactical geniuses, but my little knowledge tells me that if you have a player as technically gifted as Maloney playing in the Championship, the last thing you want to do is have him stuck out on the wing.Coyle may have only played 4-4-2 in the past because that’s what suited the players he had. I suppose it depends on who he brings in.
If by some miracle Maloney was persuaded to stay, under no circumstances should he be shoved out on the wing. Putting him out there in the Championshiop would be a complete and utter waste.
The football should also be an improvement, surely without the tippy tappy in defence rubbish and the one up front garbage. Lets hope Owen gets all that drivel changed.Ah, Mr Clough. Glad you could join us in the 21st Century.
Hope you found your journey in the Delorean pleasant enough.
