Poor in defence. The football equivalent of losing your man at a set piece

I’m sure the cost would have been much less come summertime and another 5 months warming his arse on the DW bench.

I’m not so sure it would
I’d beg to differ.

What price would you put on the head of a striker with one year remaining on his contract with 8 goals in 43 Championship games that cant get into the starting XI of a bottom-5 championship side?
Now our front 4 is available (well minus him) who says we wouldn’t play him every week?

Difficult to support the welsh at anything, but yes hopefully Flynny adds another achievement to his CV.

I wouldnt exactly say we sit back, although I’m not sure what we’ve done in away games as I’ve not been.

I think we lack that creativity at times, especially as we’ve missed Nick Powell, and until recently, Jacobs and Massey. I like how Morsy drives forward though.

Agree. We certainly don’t set out for a point but as games go on, things change and you have to change accordingly.

It became obvious 2nd half that they would be the more likely side to nick it so first things first we had to make sure we got a point but we still had Massey, Jacobs, Powell and Garner on at the end. We didnt take forwards off for defenders like Joyce would have done.

Exactly. Baines made mistakes but in a team that was winning and full of quality. Make a mistake in a team losing and not actally that good and you get found out as there is nobody to sweep up his mess.

If you think Wigan fans be them football or rugby dont complain then you dont hang around the dw much

Oooh….truth pricks a nerve !!…. If you enjoyed Rotherham/Stoke games then you really must have an entertainment vacuum in your life. Lose /Draw/Win….I really couldn’t give a w@@@….that’s sport but this last 4 months has seen us not only struggle to compete but be drawn into a footballing void. A couple of games aside its been shocking ,but I still cheer them on and get behind them when I go unlike a lot who sit around me.

We win games and the opposition were shit.
We draw and they were dull affairs in which we were shit.
We lose and Cook is out his depth and we’re shit.

You’re not the tit who I used to sit near at the rugby who booed when we were 20 0 up are you?

I seem to remember everyone on here having an absolute meltdown when we played all the youngsters against Accrington.

And seeing as they were hammered 4-0 by a League Two side what chance do they have at Championship level?

I’d disagree slightly with that – from last night’s game Clarke is very effective at winning the ball that is played out from the back.
Problem is that whilst he wins it virtually every time, he’s a “flick on” man & not a hold up person & our other attacking players are either too dumb to read that or are instructed to stay deep & wide so his efforts in winning the ball are wasted
As for Garner, from the brief bits I’ve seen of him he is utter pigswill

Agree. Clarke flicked on at one point and nobody was there aside from Jacobs about 10 yards back who almost got to the ball after their man fluffed his clearance.

It didn’t do Baines or McManaman any harm and by all accounts some of these young un’s could be better

Leighton Baines was playing in a side that was winning every week and he had an easy job.

Let’s just say for example that Gelhardt is put on the bench next week. A goal down we throw him on. Now it could be the making of him and he bags a brace and never looks back. Or he could miss a chance, get bullied by a lump of a defender and have a stinker. I can guarantee you that if he was to miss a chance to get a point or a winner that the fans would turn on him in seconds. Similarly, if we played the kids and lost they would berate Cook for playing the kids. It’s a Wigan thing. Happens at the rugby as well.

Cook is trying to protect these players by not throwing them into the fire. If/when we are safe he will blood them or he will blood them in nothing cup games be that the league cup or the JPT if we do go down. If Gelhardt is seen as being ready then he will probably go out on loan to get that experience of being around the first teams etc and playing every week like Callum Lang currently is.

BTW, for anyone at the fans forum or who bothered to listen to it as opposed to just ranting about this that and the other, Cook said that the young lads train with and play against the first team each and every week so they will be around these experienced lads they can learn from. Similarly Cook will see whether they have the ability to step up. Gelhardt (sorry to keep picking on him) could for example get bullied by Chey Dunkley each and every game/session which indicates he isn’t ready for the level we are at.

I thought it was a well deserved point against a Stoke team littered with valuable players.
My only gripe was Clarke, for me he’s just not good enough. I thought that first time round and nothings changed my mind now.

Out of a Vaughan, Garner and Clarke, Clarke would be my 3rd choice. God knows why Vaughan left for him

I thought so too. Same story first half of creating a few chances but not taking them. We probably shaded that half and them the 2nd. Draw a fair result.

Not great with Reading winning but still 5 clear of the drop.
