Paul Jewell fancies us
Former Wigan manager Paul Jewell is refusing to rule out another FA Cup shock by his old club. The Latics, who beat Manchester City in last year’s final, return to Wembley on Saturday to face Arsenal in the semi-finals. Arsenal are fourth in the Premier League table, while Wigan are fifth in the Championship.
“You can’t predict Wigan,” says Jewell, who masterminded the club’s promotion to the Premier League in 2004-05. “Arsenal have had a few struggles since Liverpool beat them terribly and I watched the game on Sunday at Everton, they were very well beaten.
“I look at the way Wigan have played this season and they’re aggressive in their style of play, their movement is good and I think they have a chance.
Maybe a strike partner for our so called strikers would help. Seems to be a problem we have had for 5 seasons now.
4 4 2 does work. Well it as at Leicester and Burnley.
Smashed disc?
We make around 7/8 changes on a weekly basis.
That side should have been good enough to beat Millwall but didn’t look interested. Collison and McEachran gave us no fight in the middle at all.
Carson is in goal tonightI have no issue with that. I do think Ali will be in goal on Saturday though given his recent form.
Hopefully the time will be right for Maloney to get a run out tonight. He HAS to be on the bench on Saturday for me. Will add that spark in extra time if needed and is also a confident penalty taker.
Millwall 4 4 2
Al Habsi
Boyce Kiernan Rogne Crainey
Waghorn McEachran Collison McClean (bring Maloney on at HT)
Fortune MaynardSaturday 3 4 3
Al Habsi
Boyce Barnett Ramis
Perch McArthur Gomez Beausejour
McManaman Powell McCleanThe more I see from Arsenal of late the more I fancy us to turn them over. The punters must agree as well because we’ve come from 8/1 to 9/2.
With regards the playoffs, despite the defeat to QPR the other week they haven’t worried me enough in the two games we’ve played against them to make me want to avoid them. I think we can beat each and every one of the sides in the mix and am quite confident of promotion.
Just to say as well I was on a Chorley game on Bonfire Night against Matlock Town & Chorley were by far & away the best side I’ve seen at that level including Chester when they were battering everyone a few years back
Whichever Flitcroft brother it is who is in charge there has them playing some really decent football
Unfortunately for them FC United are on a real roll & I think may pip them to promotion. If they do though they should be safe in the play offs
I think they play each other on Tuesday night at Gigg Lane & whoever wins that will win the title I thinkGary is in charge at Chorley.
Even Wigan Warriors recent trip to Australia was described by the media as the battle between the Champions of both countries, good god Wigan won an end of season knock out trophy to qualify for that match, they were not even the champions of the domestic league, a league system which is an argument some of you are putting forward as the only rightful method to be called ‘champions’Like it or not, but Wigan Warriors are the Super League CHAMPIONS. Huddersfield were the LEAGUE LEADERS. The Champions in rugby league are the winners of the Grand Final.
It’s stupid, but rules are rules just like nobody on here will complain when we get promoted from 5th/6th as opposed to the team that finished 3rd.
Promotion for me.Nothing will beat that day last season but that was us against the odds, beating City with a last minute goal.
Beating Hull or Sheff Utd, wouldn’t create the same euphoria for me.
Think we’d be a different proposition in the Prem under Rosler and I’d like to get back there sooner rather than later
The whole campaign is against the odds though this year :)
WBA won it in 1931 & got promoted from the 2nd division that same season. Maybe lightning will strike twiceMay have been that stat that I saw. Would make sense.
No Ozil that’s for sure
The reason why nobody has used it is a perfectly good argument though. It isn’t true. We are not the Champions of the FA Cup. We are the winners of the FA Cup.
Did Liverpool and Man Utd trade “Championees Championees” chants in 2001 when one won the cup and the other won the league? No, because Liverpool were the cup winners not the champions.
The club have produced a t-shirt with it on now and it still doesn’t make it true just like my belly would not be the fuel tank for a sex machine should I purchase one of those t-shirts from Benidorm.
It isn’t a perfectly good argument though – all you & Griff (& others) are talking about is your own personal preference (& admittedly the preference of the vast majority of others) for the word winners over champions
Unless there is an official FA regulation stating that the team that wins the FA Cup must be referred to as winners & not champions (& there isn’t) & as the Oxford dictionary’s definition of champion is “a person/team who surpassed all rivals in a sporting contest or competition” then I’m sorry but a team who wins the FA Cup can quite rightly claim to be the FA Cup champions
For what it’s worth I was at a cup final involving United at some point in the 90’s & when they won, their fans (& players) were singing “championees” so they considered it acceptable too. I didn;t hear any pedanitc feckers in the crowd round me whinging that people should stop singing it coz they were the “winners” & not “champions”I have neither met you, nor seen you getting down & dirty, to be able counter your argument that your belly is not the fuel tank for a sex machine – Mine is & I’ve got the t-shirt to prove it!! ;) :woohoo:
As mentioned I would say the fact that the FA had big boards printed saying WINNERS and announced as we lifted the trophy that we were the cup winners and have displayed on their website that we are the cup winners that we are indeed the cup winners.
FA Cup gobshitesThey exist though. There’s one in your avatar.
;) :P
Just had a quick glance and as far as I can see, I don’t think a lower division side has ever successfully defended the FA Cup.Even more reason to win it.
Sure I read somewhere at the start of the season regards that part that we would be the first since the 50s but I may have mis-read
FA Cup.
First lower division side to win it since 1980 and the first to defend the trophy since the 50s I believe.
You might be right with teh first bit of that, but in my lifetime alone (since 1975), Tottenham won it 2 years on the bounce (81 & 82), Arsenal won it 2 years on the bounce (2002 & 2003) & so did Chelsea (2009 & 2010)
Going back a bit further, Spurs also won it in successive years in 1961 & 1962
I meant lower league side to defend it which I thought was obvious but clearly not ;)
