If we don’t win the world cup then surely every Latics fan will want the Belgians to do it. Is it not part of our incredible story if our former manager wins it. Bobbys best times were with us so if it ain’t gonna be us then let him add the biggest trophy in football to his cv.
I don’t want Belgium to win it any more or less than any other country left in it that isn’t England
Nothing against Bobby & Jonah in the way they left but whilst it’s amusing to see Jonah on the sidelines at a World Cup 20 years after a mate of mine told him to “Put the biscuits back Jonesy, you’re starting to look tubby” when they all piled into a shop we were in at Hammersmith after an game v Fulham, I don’t see how them leaving is part of our story – they’ve left.
They’re ex players/managers/ coaches just like hundreds of others.Mind you what is even more amazing than Bobby & Jonah at a World Cup is seeing Andreas Granqvist there too. I know he was relatively young when he was with us but bloody hell he looked slow & error prone – barely puts a foot wrong now
. I’m also sick to death already of seeing players and managers making the tv shape if they think a decision has gone against them.Agreed. Including Harry Maguire the other night.
For me it should be a cautionable offence just like waving an imaginary card at the ref isSo what’s the view with a handful of games left? Personally I think it has been a good thing, plenty of decisions changed to see the right outcome, and a couple of dodgy ones don’t tip the balance to negative for me.I’m the opposite- far more negative things from it than positive in my opinion
So because it was a push it was red. Had he hacked him down it was yellow like the Denmark game. Thanks TL.
If the foul had been in the penalty area then yes it was a red coz it was a push
As for the hacking – not necessarily. if you slide in from miles behind & trip him it’s stiall a red. If it’s a lunge that’s dangerous it still a red. If it’s a challenge where they have no chance of getting the ball, it’s still a red
To escape a red the ref has to deem it a genuine attempt for the ball (if it’s in the penalty area)TL – Am I right in thinking the Swiss lad shouldn’t have been sent off if the ref is giving a penalty as the keeper was there?
That’s not my interpretation. Nothing to do with in teh area for a penalty, or outside for a direct free kick.
The offence is DAGSO – denying a goal scoring opportunity. Would he have had an opportunity to score? As all he had to do in that position was to beat the keeper (and I know that many miss, but it’s the opportunity that is key) so he was denied that opportunity, a red card is correct.
The law was changed 2 season’s ago – if you commit a foul that the referee considers to be DOGSO (denying of a goal scoring opportunity) in the penalty area, the referee shouldn’t issue a red if they feel it was a genuine attempt for the ball.
As a result it has to be an attempted tackle.
If it was a push or a pull then it should still be treated like the old DOGSO & be a red. That Swiss defender shoved the Swedish player so it was correct to give him a red when the ref thought it was a penaltyIf the foul is committed outside the area the old DOGSO guidance applies so in effect if you’re gonna challenge it’s better to do it in the penalty area if you want to keep 11 men on the pitch
Would you have given Spain the penalty TL or would you have ‘refereed the occasion”?Be honest.
If I’d have seen an offence at the time I’d have given it without thinking- I also like to think I’d have made a big deal before the corner about pushing & pulling so that if I had to give one I could say they’d all been warned.
If I’d missed it & then VAR said it should be looked at, I’d have been praying to God that I could get away with not giving it. This ref can possibly just about get away with it but I think in the 18th minute he’d have given it!!
It’s like if a team is attacking & 90 minutes is up on your watch, virtually every ref will allow that attack to reach its end whilst praying they don’t score
But, how the spanish were denied a penalty, VAR only knows.
Coz it was in the last minute, against the host nation, in Moscow, with a place in the quarters at stake
He’d have had to have been punching him in the face for that to ve given
My thoughts exactly TL so what is the answer coz if your right it is cheating pure and simple.
There isn’t an answer unfortunately – there was enough there for them to be able to justify (however unconvincingly) that there was no foul so they’ll just stick to that line.
But I did say when watching it at the time (even before seeing the replay) that there was no way that the ref would give a penalty at that moment against Russia & so it proved.Just like when Scholes wasn’t sent off at the DW for that title decider & I heard the referee’s head justify it the next day by saying that some times an official has to referee the “occasion” rather than just the match

He’d have had to have been punching him in the face for that to ve givenShower of shite that shows England have no strength in depth. LOLIt doesn’t show that there’s no strength in depth at all – what it shows is that if you make 8 out of a possible 10 outfield changes & put together a team that hasn’t played together as a unit before, that the performance will be bitty & disjointed.
Latics put out a scratch side in competitions this year & we lost some of them – it didn’t mean we didn’t have strength in depth just that making that many changes means poorer performances.
Strength in depth in a squad means being able to handle a couple of injuries or suspensions & when Latics had those the team did fine. Just as England willthe only worry for me was that our first choice keeper looked shaky at times
You’re right there. England have scraped by Tunisia
Bit harsh that mutty. I personally thought they battered tunisia, but just couldn’t take their chances.
Spot on Runcorn we completely dominated Tunisia and could have had six against them as well. Its ok for the others to struggle to beat the dross they will just get brilliant instantly but not England. But if we do progress deep in the tournament watch the back trakking from some on here.
I’d just like to point out that I have been impressed with how England have played – when a lot of people were criticising the Tunisia game I said we’d played really well 1st half, got done by a silly error from Walker & then had to face a Tunisian side who packed everybody back & sat on the 1-1 that they had. When a team does that it’s hard to break them down no matter who you are as Belgium found out against Panama in their 1st half.
Against Panama we never looked in any danger & took our chances – thoroughly professional performance bar one switch off late onMy comments were more tempered with a realism as to how far the team can go. I think quarters at least but we can’t escape from the fact that out of the first 2 games England created the 2nd fewest chances from open play – against sides who can defend set pieces well & without fouling we’ll need to create more chances that aren’t fashioned from set pieces
I also agree that by the same token i haven’t seen a side that England should be overly worried by – Germany have looked poor, Brazil have looked poor, Argentina have looked poor, France looked okay but nothing mind blowing, Russia struggled against the first decent side they played. Ditto Spain & Portugal. Uruguay, Colombia & a few others have blown hot & cold. Croatia have looked the best so far for me
Tyldesley, at the time when we had the 3 amigos kit, i was at wolverhampton uni. I went in to the wolverhampton jjb store one day wearing said kit. All the staff were wearing the same. The only difference, mine had a badge.Firstly, I had all the staff wondering who i was.
Secondly, this guy comes in & with the thickest of black country accents, asking how much these trainers were. My reply in my thickest of wigan accents, “Do i look like i work here pal?” Then showed him the badge.
It was more funnier at the time of it happening.
I got quite excited in the JJB in the middle of Manchester when i thought there was another Latics fan in.
Then I saw another, and another, and another before thinking FFS he’s just whacked a Latics badge on the JJB uniform
I did also get stopped by someone in Aberystwyth when I was a student back when that kit was out who approached me from behind to ask if a JJB had opened in townIt never felt comfortable when it was warm & the sizing was wrong – and before anyone says that’s my excuse for being a chubber & buying a bigger shirt a mate of mine who is much skinnier had to get 2 sizes up from his normal size
But yeah, green doesn;t belong on a Latics home shirt I’m afraid – Whether the club is going “Retro” or not
Of all the kits that Latics have had since I started to support them. That blue white & green monstrosity Puma produced was my least favourite of the lot.
Asides from the fact that it was made of an awful material that didn’t allow your body to breathe properly, what the feck did green stripes ever have to do with Wigan Athletic other than fitting in with the corporate colours of JJB??
At least with the demise of JJB people wearing it won’t look like shop assistants this time round
However, following a poll I saw on some Latics Facebook group it seems I’m in a minority as this was voted the favourite shirt
Oh & I hope that as Whelan’s selling the club that DW Fitness First are paying the going rate for sponsorship
The Addidas kits also with green were much better than the Puma 3 amigos one. Quality shirt made of good material. Funny enough I was never a huge fan of the said Puma effort which are on sale in the Grand Arcade as we speak.
Haven’t liked any of our kits with green as its not a Latics colour – at least not for a home kit. But you’re right the Adidas ones probably were the best made ones we’ve had.
The home shirt should be blue & white stripes or all blue with a bit of white – that’s what our club colours are, not feckin green
I’d also like to see the return of the yellow away kitPersonally, if the manager thinks that both would add to or be better than we currently have then I’ll go with his judgement & I don’t care what they’ve done or said before.
My issue with both players is that they only ever produced their best for us in a specialised positions – I suspect that since leaving that they’ve both been played primarily as wingers and that’s why neither have achieved what they’re capable of. Played as part of a flexible & free role front line they’re both good enough (or were)
On top of that, Wildschut blows hot & cold. Did in league 1 & did in the Championship – strangely it was that muppet Joyce that got the best performances out of him in the Championship.
McManaman had a brief purple spell in the top flight relegation season but didn’t do a great deal for us after that as he was either played out of position as an out of out winger by Coyle, or was injured & suspended a lot under Rosler. Even in that purple spell his end product was often found wanting (watch his FA Cup Final performance). His attitude also seemed to stink at times & I’ve heard quite a few stories of his unprofessional attitude towards his fitness & training from people I trustSo i don’t know is the short of it – trust Cook’s judgement but these are 2 players that we possibly know more about their strengths & weaknesses than he may. But yeah, not bothered about the past
To be honest, i thought that England played much better in the first half against Tunisia than they did against Panama.
Not complaining about the result one bit but the zip, chasing down the opposition & neat passing that carved Tunisia open in those first 45 minutes was missing yesterday. I appreciate that the stifling heat & humidity may have played a large part in that but we didn’t create anywhere near as many chances yesterday as in the first game.
I also worry slightly that out of 8 goals scored, only 2 have come from open play & one of them was a jammy deflection. If we play against a team that can actually defend a corner without fouling they may struggle to score. That said, for the first time I’m enjoying watching England at a World Cup with no expectation & I think reaching the quarter finals should be considered a success for them
