What’s all this “I’m not bothered if we get relegated, it was going to happen sooner or later”.

Well I’m sorry but I would be bothered if we got relegated. I don’t want to see the team I support go down. Despite what another thread has said we are at the pinnacle of the English game, playing against some of the best players in the world on a weekly basis.

Why would anyone not be bothered about dropping down a division and seeing us play against mediocre opposition at, let’s be honest, some shyte grounds.

I want my team to be successful, punching above their weight and confounding the critics.

I had a conversation with a Rangers fan last summer where he asked me how I could support Wigan when we invariably hover in the bottom half and get a good thumping off the big boys.

I explained that our existance in the top flight is still a dream to me. I never thought 15 years ago we would be in the Premier League let alone that we would stay there for six seasons. And yes while we may take a few drubbings, I look forward to us every year maybe sticking two fingers up at the big boys and pulling off a shock win, which we did THREE times last year.

We still have one big scalp to claim, but I believe one day we will do it and maybe, just maybe the ref will smile on Little Wigan.

I think a lot of our fans need to take a reality check. Most clubs’ fans are jealous of us, yes jealous of us because we are a small club who are playing cup finals every week while they travel to Torquay or Hartlepool on a cold Tuesday night. We get the p&ss taken out of us by other fans for our poor support, but who cares we are Wigan and proud.

I for one want us to have a few more cup finals against the big boys next season so anyone who is not up for the fight and give their support to the lads can F*ck off and support a small team who dream of one day doing a Wigan.

I can understand where you’re coming from & I know that watching it on telly is not the same as watching it on a TV/computer screen
    BUT
at the end of the day they are a wigan athletic fan & I assume that before they moved to the middle east for work that they did used to go to games. As such if they are watching the same 90 minutes of football that you are then (IMO) they are just as entitled to say what they think is right & wrong about the team. They are after all watching the same game of football at the end of the day & can see the same things as you

Maybe I’m a bit touchy coz I fall into the bracket of a local fan who can’t doesn’t go to anywhere near as many games as he used to. IMO it doesn’t make me any less entitled to have an opinion

in reply to: sympathy for SAF #61252

Without wanting to take any sides here, I’m baffled as to why someone who lives in the middle east due to work but gets to see all the games live on a PC is less entitled to an opinion on Latics than someone who lives locally due to work & pays to watch them in the ground

Either way, both are watching the game & IMO perfectly entitled to an opinion

I’ll leave the personal insults from both sides out of it

It was definitley the Shevvy End coz I can remember it clear as day.
I can also remember where I stood on the St Andrew’s side & that was towards the Shevvy End & I was one of those who moved position depending on which goal we were attacking

I also remember shouting myself hoarse & barely being able to speak the next day at a job interview. Which needless to say I didn’t get – meaning my dole money had to continue funding the remaining few Latics games

Without the slightest hint or intent or trying to start an argument or trying to get you to trip yourself up or sarcasm or anything like that, can I ask you Standish what exactly it is that Bobby is trying to achieve that you like. Or indeed what it actually is that he’s trying to achieve

I’ve genuinely tried – I even get tired myself from time to time of being so negative & try to see the positives I genuinely want Bobby to be a success coz of who he is & the type of bloke he comes across as
    BUT
try as I might, I just can’t. I can’t see a) exactly what he’s trying to achieve & b) even if its his much vaunted “good” football its bloody awful to watch the vast majority of the time

I really can’t see what it is that people are clinging to with regards to Bobby that sees him still in his job & still getting a large amount of support from the Wigan faithful (other than he’s a Latics legend from his playing days & he says all the right things about the club in the press & to the fanzines)

Micky Quinn is bob on in some of the stuff he is saying particularly in relation to the crowds. I think our average is circa 16k this season whereas its always been around 18k in the past. In Bobby’s defence however, for the most part the heavy kickings that characterised most of last season & the first 2 games of this season have been cut out
For the life of me however I can’t see how he is still in his job – Bobby that is, not Micky Quinn

At which point in time are you using as a basis that “football was awful before TV came along”

1992/93 when Sky got involved. Live TV in the 80’s. Live coverage of big games from around the 1940’s or highlights programmes from whenever MOTD started up

I’m almost 36 & can just about remember football from the late 70’s. I enjoyed it then as a 4 yr old, I enjoyed it throught the 80’s, 90’s & 00’s
Stadiums are for the most part safer & facilities in the grounds are better post 1989 but I’m completely baffled as to the basis for claiming that football was awful before TV

in reply to: Urban Myths #61210

You can wind up with cockroach eggs in your mouth by licking envelopes – Roach eggs are carried by the momma roach in a hard, protective capsule known as an ootheca. This is the only place roach eggs can survive, which puts the halt to the story right there. Even if they could survive outside the ootheca, roach eggs are too large to pass unnoticed on an envelope.

With regards to the Coca Cola/Santa myth I aint sure that you’re right with that one – I’ve never heard that the myth was that Coca Cola invented Santa. More that they changed the colour of Santa’s clothes to red to match their corporate colours in an ad campaign & that this is the image that has stuck since.
What coca cola did do was create the current image of Santa as a cheery, fat bloke with a white beard in 1931. before then there was no “standard” image of Santa Claus & by all accounts you can see various images of him from before 1931 as being big to small and fat to tall. Santa even appeared as an elf and looked a bit spooky.

Through the centuries, Santa Claus has been depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to an elf. He has worn a bishop’s robe and a Norse huntsman’s animal skin

Big Ben doesn’t have any faces – its the name of one of the bells inside the tower ;)

    in reply to: Diame #61207

Certainly has the skill to be a success at this level but he’s either incredibly lazy or incredibly unfit.
    or both

in reply to: Would you agree? #60878
I actually dont think that the majority or the squad is that bad. The likes of Al Habsi, Alcaraz, Diame, McCarthy, Moses, Hugo, N’Zogbia, Boyce and Cleverly are all good players plus McArthur, Di Santo, Figgy can do a job. The problem is the formation/system that they play in and the man in charge of them. As I have said before the group of players we have here are not one of the worst three in the league

i think you’ll find quite alot of debate on whether Alcaraz & Diame are good players
IMO Alcaraz defends like a school kid & Diame is either lazy or unfit or both
Rodallega misses far too many easy chances
Moses hasn’t shown a anything like the consistancy needed to say he is a good player
On top of that I’m not sure what jobs Di Santo & Figueroa can do but they aren’t good ones

My own personal opinion is that Al Habsi, McCarthy, N’Zogbia & Cleverley are good players. The rest are either average, not good enough or have yet to prove one way or the other

Martinez & his system need to take a big portion of the blame for the team being bottom but the players need to hold their hands up & take responsibility too
Just takign Saturday’s game as an example I doubt it was playing 4-5-1 or Bobby’s instructions that made Moses fluff his 1on1 with Van de Saar. Nor was it responsible for Figueroa not paying any attention to the opposition player nearest to him for the opening goal, or Alcaraz following the ball instead of his man for the second. I doubt whether Bobby instructed his defenders to try & play offside from within the opponents half for the 3rd goal & i doubt Bobby had instructed Gohouri to watch the ball go over his head & then turn round & let the opponent with the ball have a free go at goal
All 4 goals were conceded because of basic things that the players got wrong & weren’t anything Bobby could have done a damn thing about aside from him being the bloke that bought (most of em) & picked em in the first place

I think we’re both coming to the same conclusions (i.e. that Rooney should have been sent off at the time & that having not been sent off then some action should now be taken against him) but via slightly different routes

I also acknowledge that N’Zogbia’s “headbutt” was less severe than Rooney’s elbow (even my wife said she’d have been embarrassed to hit the deck like Wilshire did after that contact!!) but you do use alot of if’s in your argument – “if” McCarthy had stepped over a bit more, “if” rooney had been running faster.
By the same token “if” Wilshire had stepped closer to N’Zogbia & with a bit more speed in his step he could have seriously damaged one of his eyelashes!!

As for Roberts he may not have hit someone as he ran past them but some of his elbows were quite nasty & sly & he didn’t always get caught & punished for them – one in particular he did away at West Ham i think was a shocker

in reply to: This Premier Joke stinks. #60870

Which kind of proves my point that if latics players or players in games that don’t involve Latics do it then its neither here nor there. If however someone does it against Latics then all the footballing world should vilify them

in reply to: This Premier Joke stinks. #60868

No i don’t think latics would have got such leniency but its not Rooney’s fault that the ref’s are running scared of the power wielded by the big clubs & their manager’s & the fact that they have a big say in whether a ref gets appointed to their games

gerard got off with a (IMO) far worse elbow smash in someone’s face earlier this season but there was nowt similar on here about it

in reply to: Roberto Martinez: ‘The Fall Guy’. #60860
Appointing Jones and Barrow was a total mistake and is a big part of the reason we are in the quagmire now

Dave Whelan didn’t appoint Jones & Barrow – they were Roberto Martinez’s choices.
With Jones in particular Bobby insisted that he would not come unless he could bring his backroom staff with him & Whelan paid alot of money to ensure that this happened
You can’t appoint a manager & say you trust them to do the job & then force backroom appointments on them because you don’t think their own choices are good enough or because you don’t think they themselves are good enough
If that’s what Whelan would have had to do to ensure Bobby was a “success” then there would have been no point in appointing him in the first place – you might as well as pulled in any tom, dick or harry of the street & got alex ferguson in as their assistant

    Tyldesley

You’ve managed to turn Rooney criticism into an anti-Wigan post.

The ‘headbut’ you refer to was N’Zogbia’s, and it was more a ‘head-nudge’. A sending off offence –yes, but half-hearted, never likely to cause any injury, and provoked by verbal abuse from Wilshire.

Who committed the stamps and elbows? If two of the culprits were Cattermole and McCulloch, then they were punished deservedly.

Rooney however, was not punished, and his act was out of frustration and sheer malice. Prior to the incident, he’d had the first touch of Peter Sutcliffe, and was getting wound up by it. McCarthy stepped into his path, and frustrated, he went for him with his elbow. Had he connected properly, he could have done some serious damage.

Rooney shouldn’t be vilified, however what he did should have been punished as it is far more serious and malicious that ‘nudging’ someone with your head, or even taking a swing a someone when they’re facing you. What he did was cowardly and downright nasty.

Eh??? How was anything I posted “anti-Wigan”

For the record I agree that what Rooney did was wrong & he should have been sent off for it at the time but Clattenberg quite clearly didn’t see it properly
However having for some reason given a free kick for somet he didn’t see i think he’s realised that he would have created a big $h!t storm for himself by saying he didn’t see the elbow & so he has taken the easy way out & said he saw the incident & thereby ensuring that the worse he’ll get is a couple of points taken off his assessors report & it’ll all be forgotten about & he’ll continue to get his big match appointments

Back to Rooney, yes it was a disgraceful action from him born as you said out of frustration at himself & malice at another player. I accept that
My point, however badly made, was that Latics players have committed similar offences in the past and, whether caught & punished or not, I don’t recall seeing any posts from Latics fans on here stating that they should be vilified for all eternity for doing somet so despicable – quite the opposite in fact. People who were there still laugh about Graeme Jones sticking one on Terry Angus against Fulham back in 96/97. The same person who was cautioned by police for smacking people in the tunnel after a Swansea game but I didn’t hear people objecting to his appointment on those grounds. Did you?
Jason Roberts reagularly used to elbow people in the face when he was playing for us – think he got sent off for it once (against Everton) but he got away with it countless times. Did you or any other latcis fan demand he was booted out of the club & vilified by all opposition fans? Nope
And that’s my point, Rooney did it, it was sly & out of order & he got away with it. His actions (& gettign away with it) don’t IMO mean that we should expect every fan in the country to treat him with disrespect & not to back him next time he plays for England.
As i say it doesn’t make what he did right or the fact he got away with it but if you agree with the original poster then (IMO) you can’t defend N’Zogbia in the Arsenal game coz a) Wilshire had said somet to him b) coz the headbutt was soft coz by the same token all Rooney’s elbow caused McCarthy to do was rub his ear for a bit & c) coz he got sent off for it
