I wouldn’t be so sure – there were plenty of times last season when Bobby didn’t look up to the job & he didn’t walk then
Maybe Whelan needs to stop sacking managers and let someone build a legacy at the club, then you will see a more stable club.Barrow – sacked in 1995
Deehan – left in 1998
Mathias – sacked in 1999
Benson – Moved upstairs in 2000
Rioch – sacked in 2001
Bruce – left in 2001
Jewell – left in 2007
Hutchings – sacked in 2007
Bruce – left in 2009
Bobby – still here the last time I checkedSo he’s sacked 4 managers in 15 years & only 1 in the last 9 (& I don’t think you’ll get many who in hindsight disagree with that) – I don’t think he can be criticised on the sacking managers score
Personally I don’t think there’s a cat in hells chance of O’Neill being offered the City job if they sack Mancini – a) coz of the circumstances surrounding his departure from Villa & b) the owners will want someone far more high profile than a bloke who has managed Wycombe, Norwich, Leicester, Celtic & Villa
There’s even less chance he’d ever get offered the United job either due to his lack of European success
Anyway that’s going away from the point of my original post – if you don’t ask you don’t get.
i think that if/when Bobby goes then Whelan should aim as high as possible with his next appointment
Someone has posted that they would like O’Neill in charge but “he wouldn’t come” – well if you don’t ask him then you don’t find out & personally I can’t see many more top flight English jobs liable to come up in the near future.
Curbishley is another potential candidate & they’ll be plenty of others too (although not necessarily ones I’d agree with) like ErikssonYes, yes, yes – that may well all be true but don’t forget we beat Chelsea, Liverpool & Arsenal
Therefore Bobby must stay. All hail King Bobby!!!! ;)On a serious note – I’ve said since about October of last year that Bobby wasn’t up to the job & have seen nowt since then that would make me change my mind BUT i think to sack him after one game would be ridiculous. Saturday could (although I doubt it) be a completely freaky, one off result & Bobby should be given 10 games of this season to prove he’s learned his lessons & can improve upon last season’s performance
If he can’t do this then it leaves another manager with enough time to turn things around a la Bruce in 07/08 as I honestly believe that with the right tactics, coaching, formation etc.. the first choice XI could be a pretty decent outfitTo be honest Griff, after having seen the way the likes of Paul Scharner were with Chris Hutchings (i.e. telling him to f off when being given on pitch instructions) it was one of my fears in appointing Bobby in the first place that some of our more petulant players would have a “Who the F are you?” attitude
i think it has been there from the start but I don’t think Bobby has helped his cause either in ways he has handled outbursts of dissent such as those that were coming at regular intervals from Paul Scharner. It also looks pretty weak if a player gives an interview stating that he wants to play in midfield or else he’s off & the very next game you play him there.
I’m sure we’ve all worked with bosses in the past who have let their staff walk all over them & its a recipe for disaster.
Not being in on what happens at training my comments can only be speculation about what happens there, but if the fans are thinking “What the hell is he doing with that substitution?” or “Why doesn’t he change his formation/system to turn things round?” you can bet your @r$e that the players are thinking it as well. The longer it goes on & the longer the manager continues to repeat the same mistakes the worse that attitude will get. Again, I’m sure we’ve all worked with bosses who we’ve thought haven’t got a clue what they’re doing & the result of that is that people start to ignore what they’re being asked to doI was moving house over the weekend & so didn’t get to the game (lucky me!!!) but can I just ask a question that will help me in trying to decide whether Bobby has learnt his lessons from last season?
During the game I was looking on my phone at the line ups & substitutions & it looked like Bobby was making like for like substitutions i.e. right back off, right back on & central midfielder on, central midfielder off, without changing the “system” or formation. Watching the extended highlights later however i thought I saw Rodallega playing through the middle towards the end of the 2nd half
So despite his initial tactics & formation not working in the slightest & his team being 3-0 down at half-time, did Bobby change anything other than like for like personnel changes?I’m a fully paid up member of the darkside but I don’t think you can really talk about replacing the manager for a good few games yet.
As much as I fear its syptomatic of what would happen if Bobby stays, I’m hoping against hope that Saturday’s result & performance was one of those one off freak results that you get early on in the season. I’m also hoping that all those on the “light” side have been right all along & Bobby does know what he’s doing & its all gonna come good very soon – i thik it was Bobby Gould on TalkSport on Saturday morning who said “Ignore the results & performances in the first 5 games coz the majority of them will be freak results. Take stock of the next 5 & then you’ll be able to tell how a team will do”
10 games in, if latics continue as they did on Saturday, won’t be too late to turn things round as Bruce managed it & he had a far worse set of players to do it with & i think managed correctly this team could do really wellMy take on it has always been that the players have no respect for him and therefore only want to play when it suits them (Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal at home last year, for example). You could also look at it & say that after having to deal with him every day in training & on match days that its not a case of having no respect for him coz he was only a lower level league player but a case of realising that he doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing – and maybe that’s what causing the lack of respect
Not really. It’s just that all you’ve gone on about all this past week is negatives. Moan…moan…moan…whinge…whinge….whinge…And you are obviously a bit peeved because I shot you down in flames on the other thread, with my reasoned opinions, and true assessment (having SEEN our new players) of our squad.
So this comment (above) was just a poor shot back at me. Very poor. Bad form, old bean, bad form.
You are coming across as one of the “Blllloooodyy Helllll!!!” brigade. If you are so negativep-minded, don’t bother going.(if it makes you THAT miserable)
The first person I hear moaning after about 5 minutes on Saturday, is going to get told straight. ;)VAT – yet again you seem to have a real problem with anybody who holds an opinion which isn’t in line with whatever it is you’re believing in at that particular moment in time
You are feeling full of the joys of spring less than 2 weeks after posting numerous rants about what a disgrace Latics, Whelan & Martinez were coz Branble had been sold & X,Y & Z signings weren’t in place. All this based on watching 90 minutes of a meaningless friendly a week last Wednesday – Fine.
You’re entitled to your opinion just as you’ll be entitled to the completely different one you’ll be holding in 2 or 3 weeks time and just as I’ll be entitled to agree or disagree with itAs for your jibe that if I feel so negative don’t bother going – I support Latics coz they’re my club. It doesn’t mean that I think we’re gonna roll over every team put before us or that we’ll win a trophy/promotion – I thought we’d get relegated out of the football league in 1994-1995 but I still turned up for the first game of the season away at Carlisle to watch us get beat.
I’ll also remind you of that comment when the inevitable “They’re a disgrace” posts come rolling in from you at some point this season!!As for being “peeved” that you “shot me down in flames” on another thread with your “reasoned opinions” & “true assessment (having SEEN our new players) of our squad, just a few points:
a) If you think i get peeved about what anybody thinks of anything I say on this board then you’re mistaken. I certainly wouldn’t care enough about people not responding to a hilarious “joke” I posted on the general board to write an open post to the moderators criticising them & the other posters on the site ;) To put it bluntly i don’t care – i come on here to talk, discuss & disagree about all things Latics
b) As I hold a different opinion to yours how can you have “shot me down in flames”?? I disagreed with your original post & I disagreed with your second one. I said I couldn’t comment on any of the new signings till I’d seen them & said I didn’t think the likes of McCarthy & Moses would have improved that much over the last 3 months – I still believe that. I also said that I don’t think we have a strong enough squad. You think we do & to back up your point started to talk about players we haven’t signed (new strikers & new left backs) -By talking about new signings you’re acknowledging that the squad needs adding to so how can it be strong enough, and if you’re talking about players who aren’t even here yet & who may never arrive I fail to see how that can be classed as a “reasoned opinion”!!! ;)As for your last sentence and various other similar statements you have made in the past – they’re just laughable & I hope they’re intended to be
Just coz you change your mind as often as the wind changes direction it doesn’t mean we all do!!! ;)
quote=”Vat69″]Not being funny, but you “Call it as you see it”? You’ve said in another thread that you haven’t seen any of the pre-season games.
I haven’t seen any of them. That doesn’t stop me being able to feel that there haven’t been enough signings in the right positions. There are too many positions where we don’t have any back up as of 9.30 this morning. The fact I haven’t seen 90 minutes of a menaningless friendly against Real Zaragoza is irrelevant
On top of that, unless he has changed drastically from last season we still have an incredibly one dimensional manager in terms of his formations, tactics & substitutions.
But one that has brought in players he feels CAN play the system. As opposed to Scharner and Bramble, who are hoof merchants.
I’d disagree that Scharner was a “hoof merchant”. In fact one of his strengths when playing at centre half was his ability to bring the ball out of defence. Besides that it doesn;t matter if he feels he has players who can play his “system”. It won’t always work – some times the team will have off days & some times the opposition will have a system that combats ours. That’s when Bobby needs to have back up options & last season he showed a distinct lack of ability in that respect. I hope he’s learned his lesson
i think we’ll struggle again & am standing by my end of season prediction from 09/10 that Bobby will be sacked by/in October
October 2015? Because it won’t be THIS October. We’ll be the surprise package this season.
I hope so, i really do. But if Latics start this season in the same manner that alot of last season was played & Bobby hasn’t learnt the lessons of his mistakes last season, we already have a chairman who (alongside stating his faith in him) has criticised certain aspects of his management & if he doesn’t see that he’s changed these – I don;t think he’ll hesitate to pull the trigger & I think a couple of months is ample time to see whether he has improved
Fair points VAT
I think “on paper” we may well have a stronger starting XI but as I aint seen the newbies play yet I’m gonna have to reserve judgement. My argument there though was that you said we had a stronger “squad” & I don’t think we do.
We may do if there are plans to bring in another striker, a left winger, right winger & left back but at the moment they aint in & as they aren’t i don’t think anyone can say the squad is stronger
With regards to Bobby himself, I hope he now has the players in who are capable of playing his system. My fear is that he is still to one dimensional & its this one way of playing with no back up plan – its a fea that got backed up when Whelan gave an interview stating he was happy with Bobby but he needed to mix things up a bit & Bobby replied the next day sayign he was a “stubborn” man & would persist with playing his way because he believed in it. Hopefully it was Bobby just standing up to Whelan & he has learnt there are times when a different approach is called for, but I aint so sure
With the midfield – I’m hoping that McArthur is the anchor man that they so desperately needed last season & one who will give Diame & McCarthy the freedom to get forward & create stuff whilst providing the protection for the back 4 that was missing last season. Time will tell
As for the performance against Zaragoza, I never read too much into pre-season games whether Latics win or lose. its from tomorrow onwards that it matters
i don’t think that it is based on a lack of understanding of who & what Latics are.
I think its based on a realism & judgement of squad and manager that isn’t clouded by a passion for our club – that said I also acknowledge that there are those who just see “Wigan Athletic” and have us down for a relegation scrap
Whether we’ve strengthened the squad is up for debate in my opinion. Almost all of the new signings are unproven in this league – (i.e. McArthur, Alcaraz, Stam, Boselli) so we can’t comment either way as to whether they are an improvement or not. And the squad itself still has major weaknesses
Time will tell who will go down – personally i think we’re in a scrap with about 4 other clubs over those last 2 relegation spots (Blackpool I think are certs for the drop) – the others being WBA, Newcastle, Wolves & Bolton
i call it as I see it & I don’t think Bobby has made enough signings in the right positions for me to feel confident in this season
On top of that, unless he has changed drastically from last season we still have an incredibly one dimensional manager in terms of his formations, tactics & substitutions.
i think we’ll struggle again & am standing by my end of season prediction from 09/10 that Bobby will be sacked by/in October
To be fair, latcis haven’t been tipped to go down every season. from my recollections its been as follows:
05/06 – relegation
06/07 – stay up
07/08 – relegation
08/09 – stay up
09/10 – stay up
10/11 – relegationOr at least it has in the stuff I’ve read
