If you ask me, Bridge is being a reet mard @r$e
From what I can gather Terry is alleged to have had this affair AFTER Bridge & his missus broke up
Now whilst I consider it to be a bit of a no-no copping off with a mates ex it certainly aint worth gettin that het up about or worth sacrificing a possible world cup place forIf bridge had still been seeing this French woman then fair enough but as he wasn’t I don’t see what the big fuss is about
“The thought that any football manager will change his tactics because a bunch of got-nothing-better-to-do-than-talk-drivel-[in the press] berks want him to is beyond laughable.”
Oh I don’t know – he changed Paul Scharner’s position coz Paul Scharner told him to so anything is possible!!!
“What does booing the team achieve?”
I completely take your point & not saying that I’m a boo-er, but can I just ask how a supporter is supposed to let a manager know of their displeasure at his decisions or at players for their perceived lack of effort?
Booing might in all probability not make a blind bit of difference but was does blindly applauding whatever is dished up or saying and doing nowt achieve? As for the rest about how bad we were in 1993 – with all due respect that was 17 years ago & has no relevance (IMO) to something that is happening in 2010. Yes it was gutting watching us lose to Plymouth from the grass hill in the away end (I was a steward at the time) to confirm our relegation & yes it was even worse the season after as we fought for our football league survival & had to endure 3-1 tonkings at home to Torquay (although we wouldn’t have got relegated anyway coz Kidderminster’s ground who were conference champs didn’t have enough seats to be a league ground – even though they had more seats that Latics).
It hurts no less being beaten by 9-1 Tottenham than it did being beaten 5-2 by Shrewsbury.
In those 17 years, Latics have moved on & supporters sights have shifted accordingly & rightly so. The 1200 there back then were no more fans than the 14,000 or so who were there on Sunday & I remember plenty of “Swain Out” chants througout that season – I even ended up in a scrap with someone at Leek in the cup for having a go at a young lad who was chanting it
I also remember plenty of performances getting booed tooYou’re right in that a fan brushes themselves down after every game & starts again & that’s what people are doing. For the most part they are still turning up – they have a right to voice their opinion after forking out whatever they’ve paid at the ground & have just as much right to then come on here & let the world know how bad they think we are or where they think Bobby & co are going wrong
It shows they care. Its the “what can we do/look how far we’ve come/it could be worse we could be Pompey” attitudes I find odd!!!
Granted a good reply!!
That said, they are 4 games we’ve got somet from out of 13 we’ve played against top half/champions league challenging teams. That & the fact we’ve only won 1 league game in nigh on 3 months would indicate that at present we’re far more likely to get nowt from the Brum & Liverpool games than we are to get somet
“What purpose does that serve?”
It serves just as much purpose as claiming “we won’t go down, give Bobby more time, he’ll come good” does
Boards like this give people any area to vent their spleen without taking it out on the players/management on match day & battering their confidence still further – though admittedly some do that too!!“In fact it is the best total of away wins in the bottom half of the league.”
I take your point & I think only Stoke have got more points away from home in the bottom half than Latics but you did initially say our style is more suited to playing away from home than at the DW & I just pointed out that our points tally doesn’t indicate that
“I can’t understand doom and gloom merchants like you, only happy when you’re having a moan!”
I’m far from happy when I’m having a moan – that’s why I’m moaning!!! What I can’t understand are eternal optimists whose optimism seems to have no basis in reality“we’re not marooned in the bottom three and have EVERY chance of pulling away from the bottom”
True we not marooned in the bottom 3 but we’re only 2 points away and 1 league win in the best part of 3 months indicates we’re more likely to be sucked into the bottom 3 than to pull away from it
Bar a couple of what now look like freak good performances, all I’ve seen this season why I’ve caught Latics has been really, really poor stuff.
I’m not booing em coz I think they aren’t trying, I’m not booing them at all but what we have is a bunch of poor players and a manager who looks hopelessly out of his depth“I don’t think a lack of effort is the problem at the moment, more a lack of confidence”
I think its a lack of ability on the part of the players & the manager
“Our style of play is far more suited to playing away from home, which is why we have a half decent away record”
Is it??? Then how come Latics have more points and a better goal difference at home than they do away??“We will win on Saturday”
I hope so I really do, but nowt I’ve seen so far this season gives me any reason to believe that they will“Is St Andrews that much harder to go to than Stoke or Sunderland? Where we got a draw in both games and had chances to win both games?”
The league table, points obtained at home & goals conceded would all indicate that St Andrew’s is a harder place to get something from at present than either Stoke or Sunderland
Liverpool were in the midst of a rotten run when we played them pre-Xmas & they beat us & in all honesty could have had a hatful in the 1st half
But regardless of that, latics are playing so badly at present that should be the only indicator that we’ll struggle to get anything from those 2 gamesPersonally I think Latics survival or otherwise will be dependant on the results against Pompey, Bolton, Burnley, West Ham & Hull – I can’t see us getting owt from the other games & I do find it slightly amusing that despite the bilge that’s been served up so far this season that people think we’ll get decent results against top half/champions league qualification challengers like Brum & Liverpool
I’d say that the poor football in the last half of last season & all of this season has more to do with a really good team being dismantled & those good players being replaced with others who are not up to scratch
Poor teams concede more late goals not coz they’re unfit but coz their concentration levels are poor
We’ve played $h!t football pretty much all season bar a couple of freak results which is why we’re in the league position that we are so to start blaming the pitch now is a bit much
Was a poor pitch responsible for us getting beat 9-1 by Spurs, 4-0 by Pompey, 1-0 by Wolves, 5-0 (twice) by United etc..
Spurs like to try & play decent football & all their goals yesterday came from playing it along the deck so it is lame excuses on Bobby’s part“I think the results are getting better”
Sir, I think it is you who is making factually incorrect comments
Looking at the facts, in Latics first 13 games of this season we picked up 14 points with 4 wins & scored 14 goals
In the last 13 games we have picked up 11 points with 2 wins & have scored 12 goals
The only plus side is that in the first 13 games we conceded 31 goals & in the last 13 we have only conceded 21 & its 3 clean sheets to 2 in favour of the last 13 games!!!Bar goals conceded, the results have not improved at all but actually got worse
In response to Runcornfan1978 – yes bar an offside goal it should have been 0-0 after 80 minutes but a) games last for 90 minutes & not 80 & b) Spurs were better than Latics from start to finish bar the 10 minute 4-4-2 spell. I’ve seen teams under the cosh for an entire game but come out with a 0-0 – it doesn’t mean that they’ve equalled them in terms of performance
As a self-proclaimed “football expert” I’m gonna pick some holes in the original posters argument.
Well one actually:
“this reminds me so much when jewell first came to wigan & we were rubbish during his first season in charge, then come his second season look what happened after that”What actually happened that was come late December/early Jan Jewell had started to turn things round, was bringing in good players & our form from then to the end of the season was “play off” form. He was then able to carry that on.
What’s happening at the moment is that performances and results are getting worse & the manager doesn’t seem to have a chuffin clue what to do to change itTo a man (& woman) everybody at work who saw that game on SKY yesterday has commented on what a poor side Latics look. If people like them can see it how can some of the “he’ll come good” brigade not see it too?
I could think of better to offer the post to than Neil Warnock but whether they’d take the position would be another matter
The only thing I do know is that Bobby looks hopelessly out of his depth. He’s looked that way since very early on in the season & all those saying they believe he will come good are basing it on blind hope rather than any actual evidence
“the players he has bought have been arguably better that what Bruce brought in”
Are you having a laugh???
I’ll admit that Bruce brought his fair share of duffers (King, De Ridder, Kapo, Kingson) but Bobby has not brought in one player ho has produced the goods on a consistant basis.
McCarthy & Caldwell are giving off good first impressions but just as it’d be too early to write em off if they were playing poorly its too early to laud them as great signings when they have only been playing regularly for us for 6 weeks tops
Diame looked really good at first but has gone badly off the boil
In Moses he has sigend somebody who by his own admission isn’t ready to start in the premeir league. If that’s the case then someone should have been brought in on loan alongside him who was ready to start top flight games until Moses was eased into the frayThe rest have to be frank looked as out of their depth as the manager does. Whilst I’ll admit bruce brought in soem absolute gash not one player who Bobby has brought in looks anywhere near as good as Palacios, Cattermole, Rodallega or N’Zogbia
To be fair to the original poster I seem to remember United fans signing it at Old Trafford when United were going through a sticky patch when Ferguson was insisting on playing 4-5-1 & it clearly wasn’t working
Not saying that he changed his formation because of the fans chanting that but he certainly changed it very shortly afterwards & their results improved. True he’s since re-introduced it but its not as rigid as it was & he will change it if it aint workingBack to Latics, to defend Bobby yesterday is in my mind trying to defend the indefensible. Its been pointed out elsewhere but 4-5-1 wasn’t working. He changed it to 4-4-2 & whilst it still didn’t bring a goal we looked more threatening & it was the only period of the game where we had Spurs on the back foot, so to quickly change it back to 4-5-1 (and it is 4-5-1 when the other 2 “forwards” just hug the touchline not 4-3-3 as some claim) was baffling to say the least.
In fact that decision was a baffling as it was predictable that we would crumble after the change was made
I really wanted Bobby to succeed but he looks so far out of his depth at the moment that its painful to watch -
