If Bobby were to walk or be sacked then i would go for Mark Hughes.
I take your points re Whelan but I’m sure Hughes would take it coz a) whilst he’ll hardly be scrimping his dole money, he is out of work & b) he knows that if he did half decent & a “bigger” club came in for him then Whelan wouldn’t stand in his way
3 February 2010 at 3:33 pm in reply to: THE REEL ‘EM IN THREAD FOR ALL THE “HE HAS TO GO” BRIGADE #21201“I was merely suggesting meeting for a few drinks to mull over things and get some real ‘face to face’ opinion, and to see if you really DO dislike Martinez or not?”
If that’s what you meant then please accept my apologies. As someone else has pointed out you have previous but I shouldn’t jump to conclusions.
The fact you say you are a reborn christian is irrelevant to me as some of the most obnoxious, hate filled people I have ever met have been religious zealots of one description or anotherDo I really dislike Martinez? – I don’t dislike him. I consider him a legend from his time as a player even if he wasn’t as good as I reminisce he was. Hell my cat is even named after him!!!
Do I think he has what it takes to hack it as a premiership manager with Wigan Athletic? Never in a miliion years. All the fears I had when he was appointed have been borne out & he has shown next to nothing (IMO) that he has what it takes to turn it around bar for the odd “flash in the pan” performance. Yes we beat Chelsea. Yes it was a good performance. Yes he was the first Latics manager to beat a “big 4” side.
However the premiership is has always had clubs who have beaten one of the “biggies” and still got relegated. West Brom did it in our first season up in 2005/06 when they beat Arsenal but still went down. Just this season Burnley have beaten United but will more than likely go down. If I had the time or the inclination I could list more3 February 2010 at 3:07 pm in reply to: THE REEL ‘EM IN THREAD FOR ALL THE “HE HAS TO GO” BRIGADE #21192VAT – your original post was nowt to do with people saying “its a rugby town” or showing their true i.e. rugby colours
What it was, was a piece/rant telling everyone to stop moaning, that we’ve all become spoilt & that we are lucky to have a manager like Martinez. Considering what you have expressed openly & privately through CL I pretty much consider that to be a change of mind unless of course you still believe that Matinez is deluded & will take us down but that that makes us all really lucky to have him at the helm
Yes “I’m telling you” what I think about your original post. Nothing more & nothing less. Its a public forum & if you post opinions expect them to get shot down as many of mine often are. I don’t get upset about it when they are
As for the “come & tell me on Tuesday then mate” – a) when someone has to resort to thinly veiled threats on the internet it says alot about them & b) I don’t say anything on here that I wouldn’t say to anyone’s face if I was having a conversation about the same subject“Yeah, I am glad we are out of the cup, as I remember the last time we got carried away in a cup, and got done 4-0 in the final.” – dunno about you but I loved the cup run & I loved the experience of seeing my team in a major cup final although I was gutted that Jewell (by his own admission) got his selection wrong & that we got a bit of a stuffing. I’d love us to have another cup run & I’d love us to get to another final regardless of whether we got beat 4-0 again (although I’d be gutted on the day at the result). You’re saying people are now starting to show their true (rugby) colours yet you also seem to be saying you don’t want to see us in another cup final coz we might get beat & as we’re only Wigan Athletic we shouldn’t have those ambitions anyway
landgateblue – let him ask me to come & tell him to his face all he wants. it doesn’t bother me
And why is it that I keep getting the same 2 lines from Fools Gold by the Stone Roses running round & round in my head???3 February 2010 at 2:09 pm in reply to: THE REEL ‘EM IN THREAD FOR ALL THE “HE HAS TO GO” BRIGADE #21187VAT – if you are now saying that you’ve changed your mind & that you don’t feel moaning about all & sundry on here or down the pub or wherever is gonna do any good then fair enough
But you’ve done your own share of moaning about a whole range of things to do with the team so don’t slate those that still choose to do it just coz you’ve changed your mind
I agree Bobby was only appointed coz of sentiment. I argued at the time to other Latics fans that the only reason they were happy with his appointment too was because of this & that if any other manager with his record & experience had been appointed that there would have been uproar
You’ve also stated on this board more than once since last night that you either don’t care or are glad we’re out of the FA Cup yet you have a go at others for the comments they have made as not being “proper” fans, yet you are glad/don’t care we’re out of the FA cup
You lay yourself wide open for people to have a go at you personally when you contradict yourself left, right & centre
I think your original post on this thread is well & truly out of order bearing in mind what you’ve said previously & I’m telling you – if you have a go at others expect to get flak backTini don’t call the people who want Bobby out (or who are merely just criticising him) or those who didn’t go last night as clowns if you then go on to say something as idiotic as “I don’t care for one that we are out of the FA Cup”
Also to compare Bobby’s current situation with the one of, if not the, most successful manager in the history of the English game after his side lost to Leeds is like comparing a vintage champagne with a pile of dog dirt
3 February 2010 at 1:01 pm in reply to: THE REEL ‘EM IN THREAD FOR ALL THE “HE HAS TO GO” BRIGADE #21173This isn’t normally my style VAT69 but I’m sorry when I see such hypocrisy I don’t really think I’m left with any other option
Last week I was posting on several threads criticising Bobby, the players etc.. & you sent me a prviate message entitled “I agree”
Now it was a private message so I aint gonna divulge exactly what you said in it but for the benefit of others you criticised Whelan for appointing Bobby in the first place, Bobby for the poor football he is producing, Bobby for his post match comments, Bobby for dishing up the same excuses for defeats week after week, half hoping we got battered by Everton so you could come on here & “hammer” Whelan & Bobby, said Bobby was deluded, and so on & so forth
yet now you start this thread having a go at people for doing the very same thing you yourself did only last week & was threatening to do this week
The moral of this story is don’t be such a freakin hypocrite“The players have a lot to answer for here, not the manager”
Yes the players have to shoulder some responsibility here but to say the manager does not have a lot to answer for is a load of Cr@p in my opinion
For a start, 7 of the 14 players involved in a 2-0 home defeat to a bottom division side were his signings so he has to take full responsibility for bringing them in in the first place
Even when looking at the wider picture of the season overall not a single one of “his” players has impressed me on a consistant basis, meaning I have zero confidence that our 2 new forwards so many people seem to be pinning their hopes on will be any good
Martinez has taken an extremely impressive & stingy defensive unit for the last 18 months & turned it into the leakiest in the division within months
There was a Swansea fan on one of the Wigan messageboards when Bobby took over the reigns here saying that he produced some great football but he did have some major flaws. I think one was his inability to know how to see a game out (why Swansea had so many draws last season & ultimately missed out on a place in the play offs) & the second (which was more relevant to Latics currently) is that he said Bobby’s Swansea team had always had a real inability to deal with corners & that Bobby & his team seemed either not to acknowledge there was a problem or seemed incapable of knowing what to do to correct it. As he is having exactly the same problem here I can’t help but think that his “part zonal, part man marking at corners” system he has talked about is to blame
Its Bobby who is choosing the system & formation that we don’t have the squad to be able to make it work & its Bobby who is determined to forge ahead with the “style” of play despite the last few months telling everybody that we don’t have the personnel to play itYou acknowledge that he’s struggling tactically so add to that his gash signings & inability to know what he needs to do to turn things round
I was hoping Bobby would be a great success but at the moment he & his team look horribly out of their depth. 2 league wins since the 24th October tells its own storyWould it make any sense to sack him now?? I don’t know but I think there are managers availavle out there who could do much better with the same squad of players as bruce did with Hutchings squad
In that Bury game, did Leonard actually score that goal? I’m sure it didnt go in. The other memory of that game was Neil Rimmer placing a perfect chip over the keeper from something like 30 yards, only too see the ball hit a puddle and stop dead…keeper just turned round and picked it up out of the mud.I don’t think it went in but the liner definitely gave it
“RS, I still think it would be a poor do if County got more on at their place than we do at ours tonight, imho”
As someone else has mentioned. For them the original tie was a big game & a chance for em to grab a top flight scalp
For us tonight its an extra game that most people’s wallets could probably do without in a game most of us expect to win relatively easily with a much changed side being put out
Just as a comparison, when they were a top flight side in 1992 we played them at their place in the 3rd round & there was just under 6,000 on
When we played Coventry in 1991 there were 3k Latics fans in a crowd of 11k which was well down on their average attendance at the time
Its a fact of life that most top flight club’s attendances drop signifcantly when they play lower league sides in cup competitions. Always has done & always will doPlease see point f) above ;)
As i said though I do know what you’re getting at & yes it can be frustrating at times when you want everyone to be as passionate & committed about latics as you are
But people have different levels of commitment to Latics either voluntarily or forced on em through work & personally (& at the risk of sounding like some new age hippie!!) I don’t think its anyone’s place to judge em on that
There’s been games in the past when i used to go a hell of alot mroe than I do now that I chose not to go to & its pee’d me off no end when I’ve heard people in the pub or read on messageboards, slagging those off who haven’t gone & grouping them en-masse as unloyal wasters
Whatever & I’m starting to ramble a bit   so I’m gonna shut the feck up now!!!February

“You have totally missed the point Tyldesley…..I am talking about folk with no excuse, if someone has a genuine reason fine”
I know exactly the point you were making and I will repeat who made you (or anybody else for that matter) judge, jury & executioner as to what is a “genuine reason” for missing tonight’s game.
I could rattle of half a dozen excuses tonight why I aint going:
a) Just about getting over a virus I’ve had since the middle of last week & the thought of sitting in the cold & rain for the best part of 2 hours doesn’t appeal to me
b) On top of the above my 11 month old daughter has the same virus, isn’t sleeping for more than about half an hour at a time before waking up crying & therefore I aint getting much sleep either so to be frank sitting in the wind & rain for the best part of 2 hours doesn’t appeal to me
c) Its after Xmas which skinted me & whilst I’ve just been paid now I have my daughter’s 1st birthday stuff to fork out for
d) I have a large bill to pay
e) Latics have won 2 out of their last 12 league games & were recently held to a draw by a bottom division outfit in the cup. The peformances have by & large been dire in that period & the thought of spending my hard earned cash to sit in the cold & rain for the best part of 2 hours to watch more of the same doesn’t appeal to me
f) Quite frankly I have other more important things I could spend my money onHopefully some of the above qualify as “real excuses” for not going tonight
If not then having followed Latics for the last 23 years home & away & visiting over 70 grounds in the process, using my student loan to travel from Wales to watch us when we were truly shit & dole money to fund trips all over the shop in our 97 promotion side when I’d been laid off, not to mention the thousands of pounds spent of my wages over the years, I really couldn’t give a stuff whether anyone considers me a real fan anymoreSorry for the rant, and it isn’t aimed particularly at you but its always been a pet hate of mine when people who do go have a go at those who don’t & decide what is & isn’t a valid excuse for going. If you go fine, if you don’t fine has always been my motto!!
With all due respect yickticmon who made you (or anyone else for that matter) judge, jury & executioner on what is or isn’t a “real excuse” for not going to the game?
I thought he was Bolivian??
In all honesty I would have preferred to see a central midfielder, a right back & a right winger but I guess that’s just me being the moaning, picky kant I seem to have become in the last few months.
having said that its good to see that the club stuck to their word & did not flog anybody (I wish they’d done that last January) & like someone else has said we did need strengthening both up front & at the back
Can’t say I know anything about either Moses or the Bolivian fella. Having said that 7 in 17 isn’t too shabby a record for Werder Bremen. The negative part of me however can’t help but think that all the talk of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Arsenal etc.. was a load of guff on the part of his agent & Palace to trigger some bids for him. If they had been genuinely interested then more than Latics, Forest, Newcastle & whoever else it was would have gone in for him.
Anyway enough negativity – I’m trying to change from the darkside & am honestly more positive about the rest of the season today than I was yesterday!!
