A mate of mine has just forwarded me a text he received this morning from a friend who has a brother who works for the Plod in London
That text says it is a 5.30ko & Latics have been allocated the east end of the stadiumI’ve been to Wisla Krakow, and yes indeed, they are nutters.I saw loads of skinheads drinking what looked like huge cartons of fresh orange juice. Are they on a health kick? I thought.
Closer inspection revealed they contained VODKA and orange juice.
I WOULD go there, but I would exercise extreme caution, as they may have a pop at ‘anything English’ if they were playing us.
Lovely little City, over 400 bars in the square mile of the old town.
To be honest I know of a few blokes who have been there as tourists & got a kickin off some locals but when I went I didn’t have any problems.
We were gonna watch Krakowia who played whilst we were there but got advised that it’d be advisable not to
In my brief time watching England abroad I also spoke to plenty of fellas about their trips & there were some horror stories about Poland. One particular lad who’d been all over the shop (who was a city fan & who my brother-in-law [also a city fan] was aware of as someone more than willing to get “stuck in”) said he’d never set foot in the country again as a football fan & that Krakow was worst of all
IF latics were to get in europe a nice leisurely trip to Belgium, Holland, France, germany or Scandanavia wouldn’t go amiss first time outAirbus UK are doing quite well – they play at Broughton, just over the border past Chester. The UK teams don’t seem to meet in the early rounds. Is that just coincidence, I wonder, or are they deliberately kept apart?
Didn’t City play TNS a couple of years ago
I think it’s more coincidence than anything. Look at the number fo teams involved in those early rounds & the chances of winding up against a coupel from Wales & likewise from Scotland are pretty slimThe old Stockport & Blackpool striker Andy Preece is manager at Airbus. I think they went full time a year or so ago too. God knows how they manage that when they get an average attendance of about half what Skem Utd pull in – no doubt they’ll soon go the way of other WPL full time clubs like Barry Town, Neath & Llanelli
I’d be quite happy to get a trip to some remote part of Europe …
Bangor?
Not on the first date.Prestatyn?
Or just give her a cheap Rhyl?
Crap puns aside ;) former Latics mon Greg Strong is the gaffer at Rhyl – They’ve also been knocked out of the Welsh Cup & got booted out of the WPL a couple of years ago so Latics won’t be playing them :P
I’d take anywhere in Europe to be honest even if it is just for one game although the quicker & cheaper to get there the better as I’m not taking out a second mortgage to go to some 3rd round qualifier in Kazahkstan [sic] or the east coast of Russia
Krakow is a nice city to visit as a tourist but I’m led to believe by many that it’s a nightmare as a football fan.A repeat of the last time we went to Wembley, lets hope for the same resultI hope it’s a better game than the last time we played Millwall at Wembley coz that game was turgid – even Rogers himself said he was determined to score coz he didn’t want to put anyone through another 30 minutes of it!!
That said, if needs be I’ll take a dull as dishwater game with a last minute winner for Latics
If Chelsea beat Bucharest then from what I can see the only options open to the FA are 2 of those already mentioned:
1) cancel a Premier league game (FA Cup takes priority with fixtures)
2) have the replay on of the semi-final dates (the stadium would still more than likely be full for the midweek semi-final anyway)just heard that we’re classed as the “away team” in the semi….therefore anyone planning on going to the green man boozer, u can’t….it gets designated to the “home team” brfc or wallalso heard that our game will be on the sunday on espn (don’t quote me on that though)
The Torch is better than The Green Man anyway
I’m far from our Bobby’s biggest fan but (taking his first season as a starting point) hasn’t Latics end of season points tally increased every season he has been in charge.
Whether this trend will continue this season remains to be seen but I’d call an increased points tally a sign of progressIMO Nani’s initial movement isn’t even a challenge – it’s an attempt to control the ball & I don’t think that it’s dangerous or reckless at the time it was made as the Real player isn’t that near to the ball & is coming in from an angle behind Nani.
It becomes a foul when Nani’s momentum carries him in to the Real player after the Real player has won the ball but for me the Real player can see Nani’s foot is raised prior to him diving in & so i wouldn’t class it as even a caution
However after the initial contact there is definitely a secondary movement of Nani’s foot in a kind of mid-air stamping motion which doesn’t look like a natural continuation of his momentum & is deserving of a sending off. It’s somet I noticed the first time I saw the reverse angle & at full speed
If the ref saw that secondary movement he got everything spot on. If he didn’t & is only giving it for the initial contact then it is very very harsh
Either way though i think ultimately nani deserved to goOn a side note, if Rio Ferdinand had clapped in my face like he did to that ref at the end he’d be having a misconduct report whacked in against him n’all
I bet our reserves impending defeat to Everton on Saturday knocks us down a position or 2!!!! ;)
Now you are just being pessimistic.
Games are played on the pitch not on paper.
Me pessimistic? That’s slander that is!!
If you work it out correctly we’re 225th if you work it out incorrectly wer are 137th(e.g. if 3 teams tie for 80th place then the next lowest team after those 3 is in 83rd place & not 81st as there are 82 teams ranked higher than them)
I bet our reserves impending defeat to Everton on Saturday knocks us down a position or 2!!!! ;)
I cannot understand why people wouldn’t go on Saturday, 40 minutes down the road, quarter final of the FA Cup, 90 minutes away from Wembley, around £30 (give or take a bit) for a ticket, local derby, etc etc etc. I am not questioning your loyalty or referring to you as any lesser fan for not going just simply cannot understand your argument regarding the team selection.Don’t you think it could be mind games he’s using in the media to keep David Moyes and his staff guessing?
Also, we played our 1st 11 in both league games and failed to win either so maybe he’s thinking a mix up in the team might get the win?
I don’t think for 1 minute he’ll deliberately pick a team to lose the game or a team he doesn’t feel can match Everton.
Don’t you think Mr Whelan may have a thing or two to say about a trip to Wembley?
I think the only person who knows the answers is the boss himself.
What you are saying is if you knew for definite he was picking the team that hasn’t beat Everton in 2 games this season and has us lying near the bottom of the league you would go?
1) The team selection argument I don’t think is hard to understand. I don’t expect everyone/anyone to agree with it but there’s nothign not to understand in saying that if a manager makes it clear they won’t be doing everything they can to win the game then I won’t pay to watch it. I don’t agree with it
2) No I don’t think he’s using mind games. Latics got to the quarter final of the carling cup the other year & played Arsenal & he did exactly the same then. Bobby has nailed his colours to the mast on cup team selection over the last 3 & a half years & I can’t see him changing now
3) If he thought that mixing the team up to the extent that I think he will would beat a champions league chasing side then I would be asking serious questions as to why he doesn’t play that side every week!!
4) I’m sure Dave Whelan would love Latics to get to Wembley & said as much before Latics game against Bradford in the capital one cup but it didn’t stop Bobby putting out a weakened side (albeit against much weaker opposition). I also think that as much as Dave Whelan would love a trip to Wembley & there’s no doubt that the further a club gets in the cups the more money it gets, Whelan is also aware that it is buttons compared to the TV money a top flight club will receive next year & Martinez uses the argument that playing his strongest side in the cups will have an adverse reaction on league performances & results. he trusts his managers judgement
5) You are right in that the only person who knows is the manager himself but I can only go off what he has stated
6) What I am saying is that there is a reason as to why a lot of the players who are likely to start on Saturday are not in the starting premier league XI & that is because they aren’t as good. Again as with point 3) if Martinez thinks they are more capable of getting a result than his 1st choicers I’d ask why he hasn’t been playing them more often. so in answer to your question if Bobby had a different selection policy I would be going”as much as I love Wigan Athletic if a manager treats any competition as less of a priority as another then I will treat it as less of a priority when it comes to deciding what i spend my money on & I won’t go”I’m just glad myself and around 2,500 others don’t have that same attitude.
Over the last 26 years I have spent thousands upon thousands of £’s following Latics through all 4 divisions & visiting over 70 grounds in the process and whenever I’ve gone it’s been safe in the knowledge that the manager has been doing everything possible to try to win the game – to put out a “weakened” side is as good as an admission as you can get that the manager is not doing everything possible to try to win the game & I don’t like it.
On top of that, I love the club & want all it’s teams to do well from the 1st team through to the youth set up but my money & spare time is finite so I make the conscious decision not to spend that money & spare time watching the reserves/development squad & youth teams. Bearing in mind that approx 15,000 Latics fans watch the 1st team & one man & his dog watch the other teams I’d say that pretty much most people have the same attitude.
If the manager openly states he will be putting out his fringe players & that the competition is not a priority then I see no issue with any Latics fan not seeing it as a priority for their spare cash to be spent on & not being willing to pay 30 quid to watch the reserves when most people won’t pay a fiver to watch them normallyI might be old fashioned but I firmly believe that a manager should put out his strongest available XI for every game in every competition. To do otherwise is I feel cheating the fans who have to graft hard to earn the money to pay to watch.
To his credit Martinez is open about it so as supporters we’re fully informed & can make the choice not to buy a ticket. It’t not somet I agree with so I won’t. Just as there is a limit to what I will pay for a ticket to watch any game & why I will never fork out £50 or whatever it is to watch a game at Stamford Bridge or the Emirates. It’s called making morally informed decisions & has nowt to do with a lack of loyaltyYada Yada Yada as per usual Tylders. You tell me I’m missing what everyone else is saying then brush over what I am saying.
Name yer fecking team and then lets see how the ones who play perform on the day.
Personally for me I think if he put the same team out against Everton as he did Saturday they will once again get bummed by upper Premier League oposition ( Yes Brownbob upper! – not the shit team you think Liverpool are)
Calm down ya mard @r$e get!! ;)
I’m not sure how I brushed over what you said (presuming you mean the “name your team” bit) when I said “My starting XI wouldn’t be a whole lot different to the one which started against Liverpool” and would have thought that “Saturday(s) performances of the likes of McCarthy, McArthur, Di Santo & Boyce can be put down to off days. Same of Caldwell if I’m honest. Al Habsi has consistantly under-performed & needs dropping IMO” was pretty self-explanatory.
However, if you need it spelling out in black & white I would go for the following team:
GK – Robles (dunno if that’s how you spell his name)
RWB – Boyce
LWB – Beausejour
CH – Figueroa
CH – Scharner
CH – Alcaraz (to get his match fitness back – I’d have no issue putting Caldwell in)
CM – McCarthy
CM – McArthur
RAM – Di Santo
CF – Kone
LAM – MaloneyYou’re right, I think that team would probably get “bummed by upper premier league opposition” as you put it but IMO it stands more chance of getting a positive result than the one we’re possibly more likely to see:
GK – Robles
RB – Stam
LB – Figueroa
CH – Alcaraz
CH – Golobart
RCM – Espinoza
CM – McArthur
LCM – Fyvie
RAM – Gomez
CF – Henriquez
LAM – McManaman
To me a line up like that just screams “we’re not bothered about the cup” & I think it’s wrong. At the end of the day though it’s Bobby’s choice & a manager lives & dies by his decisions, just that my original reason for posting was that a) you can criticise the performance of Saturday & even certain players but also acknowledge that it is still our strongest side & b) as much as I love Wigan Athletic if a manager treats any competition as less of a priority as another then I will treat it as less of a priority when it comes to deciding what i spend my money on & I won’t goSorry if I dont double read your posts Brownbill but to say they are tedious would be an understatement.Okay answer me this then Tylders + Brownbill.
If we are saying for example Al Habsi Boyce Caldwell McCarthy McCarthur and Di Santo werent shit V Liverpool and dont deserve a place like many have on here and that Mcmanaman, Fyvie, Golobart, Robles & Dicko shouldnt play in the cup because they are not considered 1st team what team does that leave us with?
You either want one or the other and after the Liverpool performance the likes of Mcmanaman, Golobart and Robles will be a welcome addition in the cup for me and have earnt their place in the team and should be knocking on the PL door as well.
In fact I put the ball in your court.
What team would you play? Stick them on then when they play shit we can have a dig at your managerial capabilities shall we?
And another thing Brownbob just because I dont come on here screaming to the rooftops that Martinez is shit does not mean I agree with everything he does especially not this season.
Im just not a moaning twat like you, feel the need to bust a nut on here and dont let the negatives cloud the positives and that does work vice versa
i can’t speak for brownbill or anyone else, but I’m not saying that all of that list of “$h!t players against Liverpool” should be dropped, What I would argue is that players who have been consistantly under-performing over a period of time should be dropped. I also think i argued on here (might have been another website) that for me the problem with Saturday’s game was that everybody had an off day. Everyone can have an off day but it’s those who put in consistant off days who should be replaced – for me the Saturday performances of the likes of McCarthy, McArthur, Di Santo & Boyce can be put down to off days. Same of Caldwell if I’m honest
Al Habsi has consistantly under-performed & needs dropping IMO
So in all honesty my starting XI for Saturday wouldn’t be a whole lot different that the one which started against Liverpool – other people might disagree with me, some might agree with me. I’d certainly prefer McCarthy & McArthur in the middle against Everton than Espinoza & Fyvie.
I never said I agreed with anyone saying drop X, Y & Z after Saturday’s game – you seem to be lumping everyone who doesn’t agree with you into the same pot
What I don’t agree with & never will is managers picking weakened sides. That’s why I didn;t go to a single game in teh Carling Cup run until the semi-final when Jewell had stated it would be a full strength side. If a manager doesn;t treat it as a priority then why should I treat it as a priority when it comes to deciding what I spend my cash on -
