point i was making its not just english in the prem league
but also welsh which i have no problem with
and so why should rangers not be allowed in i think it would be great
but not the irish wannabe celtic

I’ve no problem as such with Rangers or Celtic (or anyone else for that matter) joining the English league set up.
What annoys me about Celtic & Rangers is that they seem to think they have the right because of their followings to be parachuted in to the top flight at the expense of clubs who have fought all their existence to try & get there. If those 2 clubs want to join the English league they should have to start off at the very bottom of the pyramid set up & be made to earn their place in the top flight – teams can apply to join the NWCL every season so if they wanna join our party they should have to start at that level like everybody else

I’m surprised how many clubs are voting no. Only Rangers and Celtic take any fans away from home in the SPL. Most other games are played infront of crowds smaller than league 2.

Hearts, Dundee Utd and possibly Motherwell I can understand as they’ll have an extra CL place to fight for, but why the likes of Inverness, St Mirren, St Johnstone and Ross County would vote no is baffling.

The SPL is pointless if they kick Rangers out. Give Celtic the trophy on the opening day and play for 2nd place. Celtic could travel the World playing in friendlies like the Harlem Globe Trotters.

They’re voting no because their own supporters are letting them know that if they voted yes then they would not be going to games. Do they lose a massive chunk of their own regular support or 4-5000 Rangers fans twice a season?
The problem comes if Sky turn round & say the TV deal is null & void if Rangers are booted out (which it appears they’re going to be). Although I read that Rangers & Celtic got the majority of that money anyway so how much it’ll effect them I’m not sure – Celtic aside
As one of the “voting no” club’s chairman said yesterday – they’re in a no win situation & it isn’t great financially whichever way they go & unfortunately they’re being made to suffer for something which isn’t their fault

why did we have a left back taking a penalty before a 35 million pound striker ?

A question I’ve asked myself especially after the interview before the game when he was asked about scoring for England. To which he replyed I would think never, not great if he had already volunteered to take a penalty if needs be.

Mind you after his attempt I’d say never was spot on :(
To be fair, I don’t think that being a striker necessarily makes you a better penalty taker than a left back
Leighton Baines was Latics penalty taker for a while when he was here & doesn’t he take Everton’s now. Latics 3 penalty takers are either defensive or attacking midfielders & Latics most famous penalty was taken by an ageing centre half
I’m presuming that as we read & heard the England team had been practising penalties every day in training that the 4 who stepped up on Sunday & whoever the 5th one would have been were the 5 on the pitch at that time who had the best record in training. Mind you we also heard that Joe Hart had watched all the Italian players penalties for the last few years & I think he got near 1 of them – I think I much prefer Buffon’s porn method of penalty preparation

In all fairness we may have a ready made replacement in dicko.

tried to keep an eye on him when I could last season and seen a few comments on the net stating he must start the rest of the games for the season … Big shout considering the forwards they already had in the team.

With a frightening change of pace and an eye for goal I think he is going to be a really good player one day but I would love to see victor build on the latter part of last seasons form.

But saying that I think I would take 10 million….

I saw him in a reserve game last season & he was awful, although he wasn’t the only one
I spoke to a few Blackpool fans up that way towards the back end of the season & spoke to em about him – the general feeling was that you could tell he had a bit of class but was still some way of being ready for a starting XI berth in the championship & it’d be a good 2 or 3 years before they felt he’d be ready for the top flight – he’s only young so in all honesty I wouldn’t have expected any different comments but if Moses does leave this summer I don’t think there’s any way that Dicko is ready to step up
They certainly weren’t as glowing about him as they were about McManaman

James Milner should have got himself clobbered by the French keeper in the first half & got us a penalty. Its not cheating or gamesmanship but England had used their skill & movement to create a chance & Milner should have drawn the foul (in itself a skill) rather than leaving himself with a chance that was always going to be harder to score then miss

Eh? Fouls are supposed to be an unexpected occurrence which leads to the referee making a decision. Suggesting that Milner should have deliberately gone through the goalkeeper, using the excuse that England had a good build up, and then applauding the “drawing of a foul” as a skill makes you a complete hypocrite and an ambassador for cheating before an event has taken place. People like you are the scourge of football but hey, you are in a majority.

What a load of rubbish.
For a start I didn’t say that Milner should have deliberately gone through the keeper. Secondly, there doesn’t have to be any contact for a foul to be given it just needs a reckless challenge. If a player goes steaming into a challenge & gets neither man or ball but the other player has to jump out of the way, loses his balance/falls over/loses possession of the ball then a foul can be given. In this instance, the keepers challenge got nowhere near the ball, forced Milner out too wide & the chance was gone. If he’s stayed on the ground (as he should be allowed to do by the opponent) then contact would have been made & it would have been a stonewall penalty – it’s not cheating & the game is full (& always has been) of players deliberately drawing fouls/obstruction etc.. & there’s nowt wrong with it.
It’s a million miles away from going over when there’s no contact, already going down prior to contact (the first offence in that situation is the dive) & dropping like a sack of spuds at minimal contact
A foul is supposed to be an unexpected occurrence?? Stick to whatever else it is you don on Saturday’s now you don’t watch football.
I hope you’re as condemning about a player who deliberately commits a foul to stop an opponents in their track coz that happens all the time & if you don’t it makes you a hypocrite & an embassador for cheating

Think the title of the thread is a bit of a red herring Phil. I don’t think winding each other up and giving each other a bit of jip on a field is sending off tactics. That to me is just banter. We have all done it, Doesn’t matter what level it is for that, It happens from Sunday league to Premier league. Sending off tactics are blatant diving etc for me and can’t be condoned. Should be automatic red cards for any type of cheating. Don’t tell that to the ITV commentary team though, They go mad when a p[layer get’s a kick in the box but tries to stay on his feet rather than fall over. Mr. Townsend said last week in a match just after such an incident, “He should be going down there and getting his team a penalty, There was enough contact”

Whilst I hate diving (I once booked a player for a swan dive – after he’d had his shirt pulled & I’d given the penalty) & it winds me up no end when you can see a player already going down before any contact is made (e.g. darren Fletcher at old trafford the other season when Alcaraz was sent off) there is a difference between diving (no contact) & the situation you give an example of when a player is fouled (kicked) & doesn’t go down (or does go down) IMO
Also, personally in England’s first game at these Euro’s against France, James Milner should have got himself clobbered by the French keeper in the first half & got us a penalty. Its not cheating or gamesmanship but England had used their skill & movement to create a chance & Milner should have drawn the foul (in itself a skill) rather than leaving himself with a chance that was always going to be harder to score then miss

So if say the Venky’s decided to pump a sh*t load of money into BRFC and I mean a sh*t load and then offered say 12 million for him he would go there would he ! Would he fcuk ! He has a latent talent and needs a club that can utilise that talent to the maximum, there are not too many teams out there that can do that so he should be careful. However if money is his sole object then what a shame !

I’d agree that he needs a club that can utilise his talent & a club where he will play every game (when fit) but I think with comments like I mentioned in my last post that his priority seems to be in going where he’ll get the most dosh.
On the other hand you could look at it from the angle that he has a lot of faith in his ability & think’s he’ll get regular games at the like of chelsea next season or (like he did at latics) he’s prepared to wait 18 months + to adapt before he gets regular starts

in reply to: Do You Condone Sending Off Tactics ? #89498

As long as the winding up does not infringe the laws of the game then I see no problem with either side in a game doing it – its part & parcel of competitive sport.

I’d actually say that from having watched them in the past it seems the best way to wind up the likes of Rooney & Balotelli is for the opposition to have the better game & for those particular players not to be given a sniff of a chance or be marked out of the game – that’s when the lash out in frustrtaion & get themselves sent off. preceisely because as star players they are used to things going their way

in reply to: My Conversation With An England Fan Last Night #89485

Donnelly’s thread about Moses has reminded me to recount my tale from last night.

I’ve had a great month in Poland, being surrounded by Irish supporters- who have been fantastic in terms of their attitude, friendliness, knowledge of English football, willingness to interact with other fans, ability to just get up and sing a folk song in front of a packed bar etc.; all-in-all superb. The locals have also been accommodating, and have truly adopted the Irish.

Last night, I watched the England game in a bar and after the final whistle I spotted one solitary England shirt, so I decided to go over and joke about being outnumbered.

What a mistake; the only England fan I meet in four weeks and he’s a no-nowt Arsenal pr!ck who concluded that:

1. All Wigan fans want Bruce to come back as manager. (This lad used to work in Dubai with three Wigan fans…I have my suspicions of who one of them might be)
2. Bruce made money for Wigan with his sales and Dave Whelan pocketed it.
3. Victor Moses is by far Wigan’s best player and he was the reason Wigan stayed up last season.
4. Shaun who? Maloney? No, he’s f@cking sh!t (refer to above comment)
5. Hugo Rodallega was wasted at Wigan.
6. Wigan are a tin-pot club. They can’t fill their stadium because most people in Wigan like rugby.
7. Wigan will be relegated this season.

At this point an Irish lad took the offending moron to the bar for a drink and my Polish colleagues ushered me away as I was starting to twitch. The entire conversation lasted ten minutes at most and the little fat fooker had me wanting to throttle him after half that time.

Congratulations England fan(s). You really reinforced my opinions of you. (But Phil Moss, I’ll still support England!)

My experience of supporting england for about 10 years found most other fans hate the English, the spud pickers hate the English, although watching England beat Argentina in a bar in Tokyo at the world cup and seeing their green faces go darker by the minute was funny. But most England fans from the south, particularly the premiership breed are a**holes.
I had a 2 year phase of following England abroad in the period after the 1998 world cup. Its going back a while like but I found most of the England fans I met at the time to be the sort of real hardcore club followers. personality wise some were salt of the earth & some were absolute kn0b$ but they all knew their football
The supporters of the countries I watched England in all seemed friendly enough & not to have any great hostility to us – even many of the Jocks in & around the pubs by Hampden park for that keegan play off game.
You tend to find people dislike England for little to do with the football but more to do with a history of oppression (Irish) or the stereotypical image of the englishman abroad that comes from their encounters with us on holidays etc..
The demographic of football supporters has changed a hell of alot since I was watching them & I suspect that a large number of the ones who’ve gone to these Euro’s (as it’s so damn expensive by all accounts) are your more monied, didn’t watch football till sky/all seater stadiums/euro 96 types.

in reply to: Chelsea willing to pay £10M for Moses #89484

Read this…

That Chelsea are willing to move from £4M to £10M to get moses…

I’d snap their hands off.
With his comments yesterday that he would “like to go to the highest bidder”, I think Moses agrees with you too

in reply to: Bigger and better things? #89483

Mike Newell, Paul Beesley, Darren Patterson, Joe Parkinson, David Lowe & Steve Walsh all left Latics for successful careers

in reply to: Bigger and better things? #89482

If your throwing Cattermole in there you might as well include Bramble un aw.

PS Palacios is now a bench player with Stoke, bigger and better things? Don’t think so.

What was that wingers name who went to Coventry and was never seen again…

ray woods
correct! goodpost

Think we played Coventry in a cup game and Woods ran um ragged and put himself in shop window. He must have got a bad injury as we never saw him again. :woohoo:
By all accounts he did well & then got hit by injuries as he had at Latics until that Donny Page season. somet to do with his groin & an operation on his stomach
When he was fit again Coventry had new managers & he never got picked again. He says he was told later that was because Latics were due a further payment if he made 2 more appearances & the managers were under orders not to pick him
He left to go to Shrewsbury & played in the last game of the season against Latics in 1994 when they were crowned champions of div 3 at Gay meadow. Came back to Latics on loan for a bit a season or so later if I remember rightly

in reply to: Euros Fines #89434
UEFA fines Croatia €64,500 for fans’ racist abuse of Mario Balotelli. UEFA fines Nicklas Bendtner €80,000 for revealing sponsored underpants.

Discuss…..

It shows where UEFA’s priorities lie
They’ll have earnt untold millions from “exclusive” sponsorship deals including (I assume) one for the official bookmaker of the tournament & part of those deals will be ensuring no other companies other than those who have signed deals are advertised anywhere in the stadiums. What bendtner did will ensure they’re beating a path to UEFA’s door & so they’ve punished him heavily as a result
It stinks but they have previous coz Man City were more heavily fined for going out on the pitch late for a european game last season than their opponents were for their fans racist abuse of City players
It stinks but they don’t give a stuff
Just like FIFA can bully the govt of one of the biggest economies in the world into changing their laws in order to ensure FIFA’s exclusive alcohol deal with whichever brewer isn’t threatened

in reply to: £10 million #89394

Not sure that I’m “in the know” on this, but as I understand it when the Bosman rules were established it stated that any player out of contract could move for free, but if they were under 24 there was to be some form of fee involved in order to compensate the selling club for the expense of having brought the player through.
Again, as I understand it any fee is decided independently (unless the 2 clubs can agree a fee) & is based on factors such as the cost of bringing him through the system, what they were currently earning & what the current club are prepared to offer in terms of a new contract.
Chelsea did it with Daniel Sturridge & were made to pay City £3.5mill so that might give some indication as to what Latics could expect for Moses if it went to this panel i.e. a lot less bearing in mind Latics will not be paying Moses what City were paying Sturridge & Latics didn’t bring him through their youth system
So either I’ve got the way it works wrong, Whelan has got it wrong or Whelan is prepared to take a vastly reduced fee next summer if Moses doesn’t sign a new deal this year coz by my thinking Latics would be lucky to get £2mill for Moses next summer – which is probably why Chelsea have come in with such a low bid

in reply to: £10 million #89387
If the stories are right this morning and I am not saying they are as it is that time of the close season when journos will make anything up to fill space in the papers, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are trying scupper QPR’s £10m move for Moses.

Am I right in thinking that the player would normally like to be invloved in these negotiations?

If so, are all the representitives and agents of these clubs taking a break in Nigeria, or is Moses playing for the Eagles a smoke screen and he is really in the UK?

The only point at which a player & his representatives should become involved in any negotiations is when their current club accepts a bid from another club. Until then they are not supposed to be in contact with any club other than the one they’re contracted to – unless they’re in the last 6 months of an existing contract
Incidentally sky sports news is reporting that Latics have rejected a bid from cheslea for moses. The internet article I have just read doesn’t mention a fee but my mate (who must be watching the telly) says they are reporting that the bid was £4mill
