I also have watched football for close on 40 years, all of it watching Wigan , and a lot of it before all seater stadia came in.
I have also seen the safe standing areas in Germany in the last couple of years and because of the rail system there is no possibility of forward/backward movement and so no chance of crushing…. the only movement can be laterally.
In the years that they have been using the ‘standing areas’ there have been no more incidents than there were when those areas were seated.
A lot has happened in 25 years (which I think IS a long time ago) never mind 42 or 68 years.
The Taylor Report found that the main reason for the Hillsborough disaster was the failure of police control, meaning far too many people without tickets were getting in to the ground.
I personally think that the choice should be there, I loved standing whilst watching Wigan and think others should be able to do so if they wish to. Saying that, I wouldn’t now be one of those clambering to the standing area as I my kids who would be far more likely to whinge if they had to stand…..So to have SAFE standing areas the clubs will need more police to control the areas?
deffo not going to happen because the police bill would then fall at the clubs feet making the costs even more expensive than they are at the moment.
I agree with you that in life we should have choice and freedom however I also never want to see fatalities at football matches ever again- i doubt any club in this country will risk it to be honest. As much as I used to enjoy standing I would rather go to gamesand get home safely than run the risk of another tragedy.
Burden park 1946, Ibrox park 1971 and Hillsborough in 1989 saw multiple fatalities in terraced areas so it’s a no from me.
I do not think standing up on a crowded terrace is ever safe and I was involved in many crushes as a young lad that when I look back were down right dangerous.
No voteI think you’ll find all of these were due to overcrowding (plus a hell of a lot of other issues at Hillsborough).
If you had read the above or have seen the proposed system, overcrowding is not really an issue. The surge we experienced on terraces couldn’t happen on modern safe standing areas.
I am not trying to influence either way, but if you are to base your decision on what has happened a long way in the past and not on the proposed modern safe standing areas then you are not exactly being rational.[/quote]
I
I hardly think 1989 is a long way in the past and there were many other incidents at grounds in the 80s that didn’t get media coverage which could have resulted in deaths -for me there can never be safe standing areas.
I am being rational and would draw anyone campaigning for the return of standing areas to read the Taylor report and the think of thegrief still being experienced by the families of the Hillsborough disaster .having experienced both seating and terracing during my near 40 years of watching live football I think I have a good grasp of the safest way to watch a sporting event and standing on steep concrete terracing amongst rushing crowds is not what I consider safe.As much as I used to enjoy standing I would rather go to gamesand get home safely than run the risk of another tragedy.

No voteRamis can’t be far away, he was in the gym at the wrightington on Friday late afternoon before the bournemouth game working on the
looked too much like Scott Green so was never a fan -can’t see why he is going to a rubbish club like Dismal palace ( zero trophies ,crap ground, going down)
I suppose the club has to cut its cloth although I’d lmagine we will have made a very healthy profit when the next books are released !Hmmmm -by my calculations we have about 14 million in transfer surplus from last summers sales.
Or are they playing it cool so they can bat down the prices when they approach their targets-whelan is a very canny operator.Ban the lot of them -I sky plus ( great invention btw) the programme then fast forward the boring analysis and just watch the football action.
The football league show is just as bad and I cannot see why they need so many presenters and pundits especially ones who couldn’t play.
Lawrenson and Hansen were world class players and you would also include Lineker and Shearer in that company but the rest of them?
Don’t even get me started on twitchers son and that effing Saturday night theatre garbage!!!!!What we would give for a team like that today !
Wonderful end to a dreadful premier league season and probably our greatest ever achievement surpassing the entire premier league reign in my opinion.
it led to another Wembley appearance and some fantastic experiences overseas in far flung countries and we even found a new innovative chant on the back of it!
The premier league is a joke at the moment with supporters booing even when a goal is conceded against them (Newcastle take a bow) and the annual relegation battle now starting in December ????Sometimes a player can do well elsewhere and then come back and still struggle -surprised they didn’t try to use Kevin Doyle as a makeweight-good striker!
Larry Lloyd said during an evening at Latics a couple of years ago said he wasn’t a nice man which from this interview is clearly evident.
However he was a very astute football manager who acheived incredible success with two very ordinary clubs and on top of that he was probably the most prolific post war goalscorer before injury took him out.
There was always a hint of bitterness with Clough which probably came with his playing career being ruined by injury and this interview demonstrated that however there are moments though it that his dry humour comes through but john Motson doesn’t pick up on any of that.I think we should try Dicko for a couple of games and see if he can cut it for a full game given the form he is in.
Wouldn’t go for Maynard -Brentford have some good strikers I believe.Brian clough at his best bombastic ,arrogant , common sense and far sighted opinions about the game that wouldn’t sound out of place today.
Love the “I’m far more qualified than you or any of your colleagues” when talking about the match of the day presenters and this is not without foundation given his management record and his incredible goal scoring record as a player.he seems to have messiah qualities -never seen such a reaction from our supporters to a new manager in all my years watching Latics .
at the end of yesterday’s game on the pitch he seemed to be in a very long discussion with crainey which looked like a bit of a rucking in my opinion.
it was all done well away from the other players which suggests he is also a fine man manager as well as a top tactician.
In my view it won’t be very long and it’s a pity we didn’t get him last summer.Interesting one – Derby will expect to tonk us after that debacle in November and I’m sure our players will be up for this one. Most championship teams even those in form have a wobble at some point and I have a sneaky feeling for this one.Worked out just as I thought they turned up thinking it would be a coast and how wrong they were -our lads looked very well organised and jean scored a superb goal at just the right time.
they had a couple of chances but to be honest we could have won the game more comfortably and things are starting to get exciting with the way uwe has got them playing. -
