Any bids yet for Emyr Huws? I’m sure he doesn’t fancy being here pre-season and meeting his team-mates that he considered beneath him last year.

His twitter account doesn’t even mention his parent club winning the league, but he found time to say how much he enjoyed being at Huddersfield.

I would imagine he is focused on getting in Wales Euro squad right now.
I wouldn’t expect any news on his future in the next few weeks.

Quite an interesting point, which I don’t know if anyone else has noticed, Walsall don’t play now until their tough game away at Sheff United on 2nd April. Gillingham only play once away at Bury.

If, and it’s a big if, we get 6 points from the Easter games, we’d be in a very strong position.

Walsall have 3 away games in a row after their Easter break.
I think by the time they have played Gillingham away on 12th April we will have a good idea of our destiny.

These last two windows have probably been our best ever. Young hungry and ambitious players brought in without breaking the bank this time on top of the blend of experience and youth last summer. It has been a refreshing change from the fire sales and cashing in sales of the last ten tears or so. The chairman did say that the scouting and recruitment was to be improved and that has certainly been the case. Well done Latics.

In addition to this I would say that January last year was our most important transfer window.
Decisions to get rid of the higher earners were made with foresight and allowed the club to focus on the recruitment in the summer.

Gents, I think the main point of a winter break is being missed here.

The winter break is for one reason only, the weather, it’s that simple. The Germans and other nationalities have their winter break for that sole reason. They however play several friendlies before the season starts up again to prepare and raise match fitness. If we brought in a winter break our players would also need to play friendlies, whether here, Europe, Dubai or Australia so there’s no argument there.

Our winter this year has been exceptionally wet but generally our weather isn’t bad enough for a winter break, it won’t happen or at least it shouldn’t happen.

The FA Cup being devalued happened a long time ago. The only issue with no replays now is the little club losing out on a pay day, in a replay against a big boy at their ground, as per Garswood’s comments. To be honest, years ago, there could be 5 replays, all played on a mud bath, by the same squad of 15 players, with a heavy ball, in a kit that chaffed, without such as a whimper. Is football any better now?

The only countries not to have a winter break are England, Scotland, Israel and Spain.
I’ve exluded the countries that have summer seasons.
Weather isn’t the only reason. Italy, Portugal, Greece, Cyrpus and Malta all have around 2 weeks break.

Germany has quite a long winter break of around 5 weeks. Teams go to Dubai or other places for training camps and do end up playing friendly games.

The German top flight clubs only play 34 league games and there is only one domestic cup competition, where the winners will play six games (no replays), making an absolute maximum of 40 games per season for a club side, which is the absolute minimum for a Premier League side who get knocked out at the first stage of both cup competitions.
True, but due to the TV money Premier League teams seem to have enlarged their squads to deal with the extra games and squad rotation is becoming normal.
I have no idea whether average minutes per player each season is more in the Bundesliga or Premier League, but I would guess the difference isn’t too great.

A winter break would be a good idea, but the word “break” is key. I would expect every club to abide by that word and not jet off to play in some mini-tournament in the southern hemisphere, which is what will happen if it is not rigidly enforced.

Any player who plays in any overseas match during a break should automatically be banned for the length of the break upon recommencement of fixtures. So if Chelsea jet off to Australia and play a “friendly” during a 3 week break, everyone who plays will be banned from domestic games for 3 weeks from the cessation of the break.

But clubs and players can’t take a break as they need to keep a certain level of fitness and condition.

I don’t think you can stop teams going for warm weather training during a winter breaks.

Hope they can move it out again after Saturday’s game.
Then they can bring back the old pitch for the next rugby game.

Ahhhhh, that’s interesting. To be honest I didn’t do any research, I just had a hunch that it was his first goal, first game for the club, and first game of that season. Thanks. Maybe I shudv checked Wiki first!!!! All the same a better goal than Venky’s. (I thought I remembered standing on the platform at Witton and people exclaiming what a find he was…… but memories fade in us oldies.

No, he came the season before.
Didn’t score for several games and then scored the opener at West Brom before we went on to lose.
This is all from my memory, not Wiki, so I may not be 100% correct.

I don’t remember all this kerfuffle when Rodallega scored an almost identical goal at Villa Park.

That would have meant the mass media having to focus on Latics results/performances/ achievements/ living with the big boys for eight seasons etc etc rather than the negative stuff like crowds, chairman putting their foot in it etc etc.

What Wigan Athletic achieved was the ultimate in sports achievement and I’ve said it before,in any other country would have been a blockbuster David v Goliath sports movie.
Imagine the scenario in the U.S.of a small provincial town club rising from virtual extinction to reach the very top level of sport and winning a major trophy and representing their country in an international competition.
QUITE!! Hugo’s first goal ever for WAFC, and the first goal of that season was similar to Vardy’s but actually much much better, as well as being one of his best. But we heard nowt about it.

Every one wanted Wigan out, that was obvious. The press, BBC, pundits, FA, refs. We just weren’t big enough for them but were too good for too long. Once the bubble has burst it’ll be Bournemouth’s turn next. Match fixing and poor decisions will come their way soon. Why can’t people just accept others for what they are ….. Leicester, despite doing well are only just coming out of their phase of being accepted for what they may achieve.
Hugo’s at Villa was better, but I don’t think it was his first goal for the club. I think that came at West Brom the season before?

Listen,Swansea were 4th from bottom going into that game and hadn’t won away for about 7 or 8 games if I recall. They had their main talisman ( Michu ) out injured and we led twice only to go and bollocks it up! Fingers can be pointed in all directions, excuses made but at the end of the day the buck stops with the manager! Did he have an eye on the FA Cup? Of course he did, the whole team did and I am glad they did but at the end of the day we fucked it up and it wasn’t down to bad luck or injuries because as I recall Swansea were piss poor that night and despite us leading twice they beat us and so to me that was not Martinez’s ( The buck stops here ! ) finest hour!
As for Caldwell he didn’t get the nickname ‘Calamity’ for nothing! He might have been player of the year, he might have beat his chest and shouted a lot but when he invariably fucked up he fucked up good! Your proverbial ‘Marmite Player’ !
Now all that aside let’s discuss the opposite of the thread, the chance of Bob being top 4 Bob! With the way things have started off for some of the top 4 usual suspects surely Bob has his best chance yet to deliver his promise to Kenwright and the Everton fans. He said 3 seasons and so this is it for him, can he do the business or was it all just Martinez spin?

Swansea were in the top 10 at the time.
