Surprised to see nobody moaning about the attitude of Huws, when it has been confirmed that’s exactly what he had. We’d rather moan about a players attitude when there’s no basis for it only the only evidence being not selected by bad managers.
I didn’t know about this until a Hudds supporter just grabbed me at work and I can’t help thinking we’ve got the best part of the deal and hopefully there’ll be a saving on wages.
I certainly don’t want Huws here with that attitude and I don’t want him back, fair play to Caldwell for coming out and stating the facts rather than everyone at each others throats, over what on paper could have looked a poor swap.
As for McKay, I said at the time we shouldn’t be letting MM purchase players, we let him, he didn’t play Billy and now we’re shipping him off a profit I believe, which is good business as I always thought when I did see him he was slower than me.
We haven’t seen Caldwell comment on many of the departures, so it seems like he knew he would have to justify this one.
I don’t know if we are hearing the full story. Wales are very likely to qualify for Euro 2016 and Huws must have one eye on being part of the squad. Playing a full season in the Championship would give him a better chance than a season in League 1.He got a move to Schalke in the summer. He is making a career as a goalscorer after all.
Shows how far we have fallen when the big hero is david Perkins but after the awful year of home form a win against Scunthorpe feels like a win against Man Utd!
Again shows you how fr we have fallenHow far we have fallen, but also how high we rose.
Only been the once. Stayed at a Latics mates in London & got the train out there. It took absolutely yonks & the train carriages were like something out of a 1940’s period drama.
Having had a few drinks before & after the game I’d concur with the poster who said what a crud heap it is (or it certainly was on my visit which must have been 10-15 years ago – possibly a season or 2 after that fan had been killed there after some fighting between Gillingham & whoever they were playing)
Their description of it as a rough northern town plonked on the medway is pretty much how I described it at the time – I also seem to remember it being a bit of a trek from the train station & centre of town through some ropey, winding terraced streets
That was between Gillingham and Fulham.
Been a few times, including the game called-off, but don’t remember us winning many times.
Ones that stick out are 3 amigos first game & 0-0 last game of the season when Sheffield won the Challenge Cup ;)
Granted Kone did well and it was in the Prem as well but some of our signings have been disregarded within weeks of arrival. Are we assuming that everyone of them became a bad player overnight ? i don’t think so .If we don’t give Grigg a partner soon then he will follow the same route.Won’t take long before his finishing instinct wanes and supporters label him as a bad signing.
Why does he need a partner when he played as a lone striker at MK Dons?
Replace the word “partner” with “service”
Scored 20 odd goals last season in a team that got forward in numbers and at pace ,not the snails pace we go forward at.Still no answers coming forward as to why none of the strikers we have signed in recent times can bag ? Then have their confidence ruined and moved on .We’ve rarely had prolific strikers.
In the last 30 years who has scored more than 20 league goals a season?
Roberts/Ellington? Jones? All in promotion seasons.
I did a quick check and prior to this it was Bobby Campbell with 20 in 86/87.I would say that few teams would have a worse record in this regard.
Taken from an interview at the back end of 2006. (This also included Spurs making it 10 games to be written off).Recalling a conversation he had with former Charlton manager Alan Curbishley last season, Jewell added: ‘He told me he looked upon the season as a 28-game season.
‘A lot of teams outside the top five just write off the other 10 games, which might be a negative attitude to some people, but it’s also a realistic one.
In defence of Jewell he wasn’t the only manager thinking this way. The point I was trying to make was that Martinez didn’t adopt that attitude and as a result we were presented with some unforgettable games.
It is easy to judge Jewell’s approeach 10 years later and after 8 years in the Premier League.
He had a team with great momentum and that took us to 10th in the first season.
We weren’t expected to even stay up and we definitely had an inferiority complex against a well established top 4. That is why he would write off such games.A manager in surivial mode might think like Jewell and focus on taking points from relegation rivals.
A mid-table manager might take the Martinez approach. Great when it works, but it is not much good if you beat Chelsea and lose to a team in the bottom 3.Clean sheets and goals and entertaining football too.
Not in that season. We won many games 1-0 and were extremely strong at the back.
The Duke was our top scorer with 15 goals and our 68 goals total was just average. It was only when we went up to the Championship that I would say we became more entertaining. Jewell built his team from the back first and then focused on attacking.
Are you saying then that winning 1-0 cannot be an entertaining game? I remember when we played Aston Villa at home and it was 0-0 at full time. Probably one of the best, most entertaining games of football I’ve ever seen.
Of course 0-0 or 1-0 can be entertaining in isolation, but I am talking about a full season.
We lost 1-0 to Chelsea in our first game in the Prem. Even taking away the occassion it was entertaining for me.My point was that we won League 1 with a strong defence, not by scoring loads of goals and neither by playing free flowing football. That is how I remember it and there is nothing wrong with that. It was what we needed at the time. 1 goal would probably win a game and 2 goals certainly would.
As Jewell added to his team (Bullard, Roberts etc), our fast attacking play became more visible. Fast counter attacking goals at Leeds, West Ham and Ipswich stick in my mind.
We are at a point of rebuilding again. Caldwell needs to decide what is going to be the core strength of his team and build from there.
At the moment I don’t think we can see what that is. We aren’t scoring goals and we might keep a clean sheet if we are lucky.Clean sheets and goals and entertaining football too.Not in that season. We won many games 1-0 and were extremely strong at the back.
The Duke was our top scorer with 15 goals and our 68 goals total was just average. It was only when we went up to the Championship that I would say we became more entertaining. Jewell built his team from the back first and then focused on attacking.
The quote of all time “Jewell never even tried”
FFS. Never heard such crap.
Winning league one with all those goals and points alone was one of the greatest ever achievements from a Latics manager. He never tried against the big boys though but kept us up twice, the first time with quite a few of those league one winning heroes. Don’t suppose he tried against Arsenal in the League Cup either. Paul Jewell our greatest ever manager. You don’t remember that we won league 1 with clean sheets not goals?
Just 25 goals conceded in 46 games.1-2 months away, according to the player himself.
Updated, for some reason Jacobs wasn’t on the list.Cheers SMB.

I don’t think the others (*) are still here either, but can’t confirm 100%.If Huws, Holt and even Cowie had been fit they would be on the out list and watch out for Barnet, McKay and McCann being on it soon to be replaced with a couple or three who had slid out of Brighton or Rotherham’s reserves or a couple of loanees from Swansea.I’d take Leon Britton, Angel Rangel or Nathan Dyer on loan from Swansea.
They are all fringe players there now.McNaughton, well at least it’s adding a bit of youth to the squad.
And an ever youthful Chris Kirkland
Just don’t get not keeping Boyce but signing these 2 unless we’re paying them in magic beans.
Boyce has gone to Blackpool for the same contract he was offered here I’m led to believe so he wanted away
This makes no sense. Really how do you know the terms and length of any contract offer from Blackpool?
As I understand it he is still on trial at Blackpool. What I do know is that McNaughton was training with Blackpool and then headed over to us. Boyce came in on trial after this.
