Can’t think of many off the top of my head who have come back to haunt us

I also don’t remember many coming back to haunt us, but remember a couple in one off games.
Mark Leonard scoring for Rochdale when they did the double over us in our promotion season. I remember him particularly enjoying that goal, but I personally wasn’t haunted.
I also seem to remember Alan Johnson scoring against us when he left for Lincoln.
Maybe Tony Kelly is one that haunted us while at Bolton? Gliding past our defenders to score as we were getting relegated in 1993.

It goes to charity –

QPR Fines

Fucking typical of the PL. Some of their clubs benefit from the FFP rules laid down by UEFA, but then block the FL clubs from benefiting from the same rules.
What is it to do with them anyway?
QPR cheated all the other Championship clubs out of the chance of gaining promotion to the PL, so those clubs should benefit along with all the other members of the FL.
“Fight it” Fernandes thinks that it is unfair for relegated clubs to be subject to FFP straight away. I don’t hear the other relegated clubs complaining.
With contracts paid to the likes of Ferdinand this year and crowds of 18k he isn’t learning his lesson either. Problem is that while he will fight the fine, he can and will pay it and keep doing the same until he loses interest in QPR.

Fulham away 21st February 1998. I seem to remember Roy Carroll getting a yellow card for arguing with the referee. There were a few hundred Latics fans there but I went to same fixture in the following season. There were a lot more Latics fans there and I was asked by a couple of German tourists who were in the away end if it was a local derby!

There were a lot more the season before too when both teams were going for the promotion and title.

He is almsot 78!! The reality is that he will go sooner or later and I would imagine that succession has been in his mind for some time.

Who is interested in buying Latics?

Some foreign investors were interested a few years ago, but Whelan didn’t want to sell to them.
They might bring immediate money, but they also bring a very uncertain future.
Look around at comparable clubs. There are some successes, but some failures and few foreign investors have proven themselves for the long haul.

Gone are the days where a local business person can buy a club in Premiership or Championship and put it the necessary investment.

So I believe succession will come from within Whelan’s links already.
Money will not be available as it was before and we’ll live within our means.
For me the key to that is the new academy and youth development.
Give it 10 years of boom and bust of the other clubs around us and I believe we’ll still be in a good position and have a club to follow at a decent level.

I was sort of aiming at young players who have been ‘Bigged Up’ and gone on to obscurity rather than stardom! Who remembers Jody Morris? Another promising teenager who went on to nothingness!

Anyone remember Sonny Pike?
Hyped as a future English superstar when still in nappies, then joined Ajax.
I think the story stopped there.

Shouldn’t Millwall FC and the police be working to change fan behaviour at Millwall – or is football a licence for antisocial behaviour?

Segregation just makes the situation worse. Look at the extraordinary plans that the police put into place for Blackburn/Burnley games. They should be working to make relations between the fans better, not worse.

Nobody wants to go to a football match and end up in hospital. Wouldn’t you like games to be suitable occasions for all the family? At least Wigan has the benefit of a generally friendly atmosphere.

I think Millwall have been trying to change the fan culture for a long time, but it is very difficult to change.
The preventive measures makes the thugs less interested to attend games, but they probably focus their aggression into other areas….unfortunately.
Think of the stereotypical football hooligan for a moment. Every club has them, but Millwall tends to have more than other clubs. Not only because they are Millwall, but also because of the wider society.

After the game Saturday a few of the lads had a 15 minute conversation with Rosler. who agreed with everything they said about the performance and more or less said that some of the players that played today wouldn’t be playing at the start of the season. Someone videoed the whole conversation maybe they will put it on here for everyone to hear what he said?
Does anyone know how the lad Billy ? got on?. He looked in one hell of a state coming home on the plane last night It appears he got jumped on about 15 minutes before the game and ended up in hospital with half his top lip hanging off.
On three occasions during the night in the ALT STADT we were approached by groups of men in their 30’s upwards asking if we were WIGAN HOOLIGANS and DID WE WANT TO FIGHT seeing as we were all in our 40’s 50′ and 60’s they weren’t the tough guys they tried to portray themselves to be. Just wished that there had been about 30 other younger Latics lads inside the bar who they couldn’t see ;) These were just a very few all the whole the German people were great.
If you ever want a cracking weekend with LOADS of beautiful girls and good beer get over to Dusseldorf only 1 1/2 flight and cheap hotels. ;) ;) And for the discerning gentlemen, a trip to the DOLCE VITA is a must
Most embarrassing chant by a group of young lads
“TWO WORLD WARS AND ONE WORLD CUP” and “5-1”
:pinch: :pinch: :pinch:

Unfortunately throwing beer over their subs (who were warming up) threatened to turn into coin throwing. Some of those young lads were an embarrassment and thankfully they were too drunk to aim the coin straight.

I didn’t even know 4XL existed until I saw this kit launch!!

Maybe the photo is deceiving but it looks like a skin tight offering.
Hopefully some of our fans will realise they are better off sticking to the home shirt.

Southampton transferred Gareth Bale to Tottenham Hotspur for £7 million in 2007. Was that bad for Southampton, Tottenham, Wales or football in general?

We need to develop more home-grown talent, and this shows that Southampton are a club that can do it. Their list includes Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain too. Manchester United have signed Luke Shaw and Liverpool are interested in Adam Lallana.

We need more clubs who can find and develop players like these. Southampton have also sold Rick Lambert to Liverpool, so they obviously have some rebuilding to do under Ronald Koeman before next season.

I see this as good and bad.
Southampton have certainly done a great job nurturing young players. They were also smart with their scouting in youth football and got talent to join at a young age.
However, the fee and wages being quoted for Luke Shaw is also part of the problem. It isn’t going to help increase the number of young British players who are going to be given a chance at clubs playing in Europe or challenging for trophies. This fee proves they can still buy foreign players cheaper and with proven records. Ironically this is probably what Southampton will now need to do with the money.

I also hope Luke Shaw’s career continues to progress and he doesn’t think he has now made it with this contract.

I can’t see the FFP rules making any difference anyway, and part of me thinks the rules themselves should’t have been brought in anyway.
If a club acquires a rich benefactor who wants to through billions at a club, why should he not be allowed to?
Why if you have small income through the turnstiles should you not be able to spend your benefactors money to improve yourself if he is willing to spend it.

If I remember correctly, wasn’t this how the Latics got themselves out of the 3rd tier and on their way to the premiership. Clearly it wasn’t a billionaire owner, but Mr Welan did dig deep to assemble a well-paid squad to get out of that division and then on to the premiership a couple of years later.
To be fair, at the turn of the century we were offering good salaries for the 3rd tier, but there were always clubs like Fulham who were on a different level.

The key point is that it didn’t work and only when Jewell came in and built his own squad did we get promotion and gain momentum that took us to the Premier League.
We eventually got it right, but there were several clubs who tried the same way (Darlington is the first that comes to mind).

Whelan took moderate risk to get us out of the 3rd tier and he was willing to fund it.
The later successes and better financial footing came from the momentum we gathered, some signings with good resell value and not wanting to compete on salaries (eg. Portsmouth).

Was hoping they would lose, but they held on and were clinical enough to take their chance when it came.

QPR’s team had more than 4,000 Premier League games under their belt, while Derby had less than 200.

I wouldn’t call it luck.

These Johnny big Bollocks loan players are not really fighting for anything, since I can’t imagine them seeing their future at the Latics; even if we make the Premiership. Probably already on a beach in Marbella, in their head.

Are you suggesting that we shouldn’t sign any players on loan? That might put us at an even greater disadvantage.

Powell was a success when he arrived. Indeed, he offered a rare ray of hope during Coyle’s miserable reign. What has changed?
Not suggesting we don’t use loans; but if we do they’ve got to “die for the cause”. I was basically intimating that some of them with egos / attitude don’t really give a toss whether the Latics win or not. So based on that criteria who is the best and worst loan players that have ever played for us ?
I will put forward a couple from the same season under Kenny Swain just for the comparison of their impact.
Keith Gillespie (first time around)..8 games and 4 goals in our worst ever team. He certainly stood out.
Peter Thorne…11 games and 0 goals as a striker. I seem to remember he had 2 disallowed goals at Walsall away.
