We probably only need to avereage 5K+ to be in the top half.
We should be in the top 5 or 6.Who will average more (last season in brackets)?
Sheff U (19,850), Bradford (13,353), Barnsley (9,768) Coventry (8,940 incl. Sixfields), Swindon (8,153)This is a term we hear from various sources but what exactly is it meant to mean?
Is it just a term to describe The Roberto Way and if so why does Martinez alone deserve this mantle? What about everyone else who managed us prior to Bob. If anything the Jewells and Bruce’s played more The Wigan Way than Bob. The Martinez Way should be re-named The Bore A Minute Way, after we all yawned our way through four seasons with the exception of a few games when Bob switched back to The Wigan Way of Jewell and Bruce. Hopefully Gary will be switching to the only Wigan Way that most of us demand and that’s The Winning Way. Well he has been murmuring this in the press.Win, lose or draw, the one term you can apply through it all is the “Wigan Walk”
That is the Wigan Way.Looks like an election map.
Leicester are apparantly popular in Outer Hebrides
Big money for a young lad playing at a Division One club.Just when I’m thinking we’re working out our payment structure i.e. getting rid of players on Championship wages, we go and spend that money on a young lad we’ve never heard of. Hope he’s better than what’s in our academy.
To me, this shows wing-back is an important position within the system Caldwell wants to play. We definitely need to improve the left-side.
Last year we spent all the money on forwards and then complained all season that they had no service. This has to be an improvement on that type of recruitmentHe is coming from an academy that has more pedigree than ours!!
I’m positive about this signing, providing he doesn’t come with a big club “I’m better than this” attitude.Yes loanees. Have any loanees we have ever had worked out??? Gillesbie sort of. Powell for a while. Hope they do and are not just in a long list overated underworked premier league big headed posers. Worse still Judas’s posers.Al-Habsi? Valencia?
I think the club would secretly settle for mid-table to stop the slide and consolidate ready for a push to just outside the play offs the next season. Can not see any evidence yet of quality players to push for 100 pts. Again a squad should be settled going into the start of a season having played regulariy in the previous and closed season. Our squad has still to see players coming and going with pre season quickly going. I think a season to build up understandings and team spirit with a mid table position would be great and anything above that a bonus. Hopefully strong teams in all three cups with some good cup runs to build up morale and confidence for next eason too.I think the 100 points comment is one of the few stupid statements to come out of Sharpe since he took over.
He has been composed and quite reserved in his interviews and I’m sure he received many hours of media training.
Maybe his guard was down during the fans forum, but it would be naive not to expect quotes to come out afterwards. Hopefully it is one lesson quickly learnt. As far as expectations are concerned, I don’t think the club would settle for mid-table. If we finish mid-table I expect Caldwell to be gone.
Looking at our squad I don’t see a big issue in defence. There is a lot of experience and proven performers at this level.
For me the biggest question mark is whether we are playing a system that creates enough chances to score 2 goals per game (same old story really)Isn’t it time to look at who we have?
Keepers
O’Donnell, NichollsDefenders
Taylor, Perch, Barnett, Pearce, Morgan, Daniels.Midfielders
McCann, Huws, Cowie, Chow, Perkins, Power, OdelusiFowards
McKay, Holt, Davies, GriggAdd to this the youngsters (Robles, Flores etc) and Caldwell has a squad of around 20 players to work with currently.
Andrew Taylor-Sinclair gone now. Shame it wasn’t Andrew Taylor. At least I can say I saw Aaron Taylor-Sinclair’s only appearance for us!
I think that makes Taylor, Cowie, Huws as the only ones left from the signings last summer.
Not a league one player, Wages too much!and the player himself is probably very keen for the move to happen.
Andy Lyons wasn’t bad either, although more of an inside forward than traditional winger, crackin left peg.Lyons stood out amongst Swain’s other signings and his goals arguably help avoid dropping back into non league.
However, we are talking about low quality here.
We’ve certainly had better left wingers. Bryan Griffiths for one.He had an end product, either scoring himself or putting the ball onto Phil Daley’s head.
Maybe football was just simpler in those days.I wish we could find someone with the skill and natural ability that Simon Howarth had.I have been watching some old footage of him lately and he was a special talent until his head was turned and he became a lazy waster and went on to do sweet FA after leaving us for ‘bigger and better’ things.
How many times has that happened to players who leave Wigan?
I was always a fan of his, but remember him getting some terrible abuse at some games. Wrexham away when we won stands out.
He was always seen as lazy and was our record signing. I think this was held against him.He had a pretty good scoring record at Tranmere after leaving us, but had to retire early due to injury just a couple of years later.
My oldest memory is of my younger brother coming along with me and my dad to a NPL game. We stood on the few rows of terracing at the Shevvy end. My brother spent the whole game digging a hole with a stick and then proudly sitting in it. He cried when we went home as he wanted to stay sitting in it.
On-field, the first home league game against Grimsby and the 4-2 cup win against Chelsea stand out, as does the Mackem mud slide which is still the funniest event I’ve witnessed at a game! The last game I attended at SP was against Chester where a bloke called Keith Gillespie tore their defence a collective 2nd ar$ehole. I didn’t know at the time he was a loanee from Man Utd!
And that he later admitted that his time spent at Wigan was the worst in his career![/quote]
1st or 2nd spell?
Was always going to happen.
I just hope it is treated with respect by locals and visiting fans.Lots of references to crap players here, who cost nothing and came with no pedigree.
This topic is worst signing, not worst player to play for Latics.I even saw somebody put Graham Lancashire!! He was keeping up with Graeme Jones in the goalscoring until he got injured in our promotion season.
