Get Whelan out of the limelight

he’s on talksport as I type :pinch:

Why doesn’t that surprise me.
The club needs a careful & considered PR response now and Whelan is the opposite when in front of a camera or mic.

Dare I ask what he said?

I just hope it settles down as quickly as possible.
Get Whelan out of the limelight (easier said than done) because his comments will cause more debate.

The most important thing now is the relationship between our new manager, the coaching staff and players. If they are working together there is a good chance our results will improve.

They say people vote with their feet (or arses in our case) so IF he got the job, then people who didn’t agree wouldn’t go the game …. right ?

I for one really cannot see this having any negative affect, in fact I can see some of the lost fans returning in the hope of seeing a decent game of football ..

I also don’t see it making a difference.

If a friend of mine used the alleged terms in front of me then they wouldn’t be my friend any longer. That’s just based on my own ethics and choice who I surround myself with.
However if it was a work colleague or customer for example, then I could and would still have a professional relationship with them.

I have little interest in the personal life or private conversations of potential Latics staff.
Getting the right person for the job is most important.

Top planning

You mean this?

Saturday 7th to Sunday 8th March 2015

– Venue: Mercure Wigan Oak Hotel, River Way, Wigan, WN1 3SS

RMT National Women’s Conference 2015

Imagine if they all turn up to the festival too!

Jewell, Hutchings, Bruce & Martinez. There was not too much recruitment involved in these and yes, Hutchings was a failure.
Coyle & Rosler were managers we went out to get.

Either we have somebody with a connection to Whelan or the club lined up or the decision makers will need to have learnt the lessons when trying to recruit from the market.

Really? Didn’t we have to pay Swansea compensation?

You rarely sack a manager without having someone, or a few, sounded out.
The recruitment of the manager was easy. Martinez was Whelan’s No1 choice and he quickly knew that Martinez wanted to come. As Martinez said at the time “Wigan was the only club he would leave Swansea for”
The compensation was for the two clubs to negotiate, but the end result was inevitable once Martinez told Swansea he wanted to leave.
“Wigan was the only club he would leave Swansea for” was a nice sound bite from Martinez and questionable if he really meant it but what was the difference between the recruitment of say Bruce (second time around) and Rosler for example?
You are focusing on the process between clubs, but I’m takling about selection of the person.
Bruce had already been here once and both parties already knew each other.
Again, we had to pay Birmingham for him, but they were a club just about to be takenover by Carsten Yeung. It was easy recruitment because both parties knew eachother and Bruce he had an uncertain future at his current club. Probably a marriage of convenience like it was first time.

I may be wrong but here is my personal opinion on the Coyle and Rosler appointments.
Coyle – The club had people interested because we had just won the FA Cup and had 8 years in the Prem. Coyle probably interviewed very well and said the right things. That’s just an opinion based on how I’ve seen him in the media. But my point is that the previous managers I quoted had a connection with Whelan or the club. The club wasn’t experienced at recruiting somebody at Championship level or above from the “market”, so made a bad judgement with Coyle.

After the Coyle experience, Latics management probably gathered more external references about Rosler, as any company recruiting externally for a senior leadership position should do.

Coyle was a bad fit and Rosler seemed like a better fit, but may not have been the best leader of people (but it is hard to say from the outside)

It wouldn’t surprise me if Whelan, Jackson etc recruit somebody they already know this time, because the risk of the person not fitting into the club culture could result in another relegation.

Let’s see

There’s an interview with this guy in the Metro paper today who says his new book has this quote in from Xavi.

“Of the 95% of people who love football, only 2% understand it”

Does he read this board??

The 95% believe footballers are robots and should perform every time they go on the pitch.
On the other hand why should we understand it? We pay our money to go to football, meet our friends, experience a multitude of emotions and have 90 mins of release from our daily life.
We don’t need to understand it do we?

You can talk about formations on paper all night, but I’m a big believer that how the the game starts and the quality of opposition, in a lot of instances, dictates the formation.
I’ve seen many a game that we have on paper, played “one up front”, but at times it looks like we have 3 strikers. The opposition is pushed back cos we are bossing midfield and that’s how the game has panned out.
I’ve also seen us line up 442 on paper and it has looked like we have only had one striker, cos one is constantly having to come deep to look for the ball due to us getting bossed about in midfield.

I personally don’t think it’s a formation issue we have got, its more of a team not gelling issue and that is due to the constant changing of 4 and 5 players per game.

Rosler has ended up with a squad full of pished off players instead of 4 or 5 who are not making the starting 11 every week.
All the squad bar Carson, are not making the starting 11 every week and that is the main issue IMO.

So if you are listening Mr Rosler, get your preferred formation, pick your preferred starting 11 and stick with it unless injury or form tells you otherwise. The formation is secondary here and IMO is getting far to much air time.

I think you and everyone else here has said/thought this (or something similar) over the past few months and it could be a solution. What I think he should do is off-load/loan some of his players to other clubs; this would ensure that they get playing time and keep their edge and fitness, but more importantly it will reduce the pool in which he has to select from therefore forcing him to keep a more settled starting 11.

Is his problem keeping his entire squad match fit by giving them playing minutes or that he wants to try and please all of them all of the time? Whatever it is he needs to sort it out and sort it soon.
I agree with you, we have too many players to choose from and 18 good ones would be far better than 30 mediocre ones.
As for loaning a load out, on current form who the hell would want to loan them other than League Two or Conference teams.
Our development side beat Bolton 1-0 this week. Latics line-up included mostly youngsters, while more than half of Bolton’s team had 1st team experience.
I hope that bodes well for the future, but where are all the players who weren’t playing against Bolton last Friday? It is International break and no game for 2 week. If we aren’t keeping those players match fit we may as well throw the youngsters in.

38 posts on this thread and not one mentions the shocking defensive mistakes of late. Three goals scored against Fulham and Sunday league defending costs us three points. Pub team defending second half against Bolton, when we were unlucky not to have a half-time lead, cost us that game.

For all the valid arguments about Rosler’s confusing formations and striker options the real problem is our centre-backs. Barnett and Kiernan either as a partnership or with anyone else is no basis on which to build a team that has any aspirations of challenging for promotion.

Centre-backs have been bad and Kiernan is looking more like John Robertson as every game goes by.
However, the way I see it is that the problems are all over the pitch and the centre-backs have buckled under the pressure they are under. It is almost like they are skiing knowing an avalanche will come soon.

That was something I meant to bring up.
As well as Cal Mac swapping wings after destroying the full back for a quarter of an hour, at 3 down he brought on defensive midfielder Kvist who, by his own admission, won’t get you goals and left Waghorn who can get you goals on the bench.

Can somebody sort these things out for me?

In the first half there were big gaps between our midfield and defenders, which gave Bolton too much space. I can understand the logic of Kvist coming on to offer some protection but it should have been at half-time.
It was a nothing substitute at 3-0 down.

I also don’t remember many coming back to haunt us, but remember a couple in one off games.
Mark Leonard scoring for Rochdale when they did the double over us in our promotion season. I remember him particularly enjoying that goal, but I personally wasn’t haunted.
I also seem to remember Alan Johnson scoring against us when he left for Lincoln.
Maybe Tony Kelly is one that haunted us while at Bolton? Gliding past our defenders to score as we were getting relegated in 1993.
