Why do people keep bringing up the warchest?

“People” don’t – I have it on good authority from Bob that it is just one multi-poster and that Truelatic and Bickymon are one and the same.

Why punctuation is important.

Same words – different punctuation:

Dear Thomas,

I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind, thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no feelings whatsoever when we’re apart. I can be forever happy–will you let me be yours?

Maria

Dear Thomas,

I want a man who knows what love is. All about you are generous, kind, thoughtful people, who are not like you. Admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me. For other men, I yearn. For you, I have no feelings whatsoever. When we’re apart, I can be forever happy. Will you let me be? Yours,

Maria

That beats my reason into a cocked hat and it isn’t offensive either.

“15 minutes of fame”? – you really do have a high opinion of yourself Micky.

You are everything that you accuse the “spelling brigade” of being. If you are losing an argument or someone dares to disagree with you then you revert to type. You are nothing more than a bully-boy who thinks that he is a cut above ordinary mortals.

PS I see that you continue to “profile” me

It would appear that you are determined to become an adversary?

If you disagree with my point then that’s ok but it looks like you are trying to prove how intellectually superior you are and unwittingly prove my point.

Supposition…and assumption

Why do you say “it would appear that I am determined to become an adversary?” – look…….read my posts.

Don’t overuse exclamation marks!!!!

Yes, I disagree with your point – that’s my point………………..ok?

I have nothing to prove…………….get it?
It took you quite a while to come up with that response and I have no idea what it means. Did you break any keys whilst typing?

Big fish and little pools spring to mind.

Goodnight

Mr Owd
You do your argument (opinion) no good whatsoever. If the person (sex indeterminate) as I said , puts on this board their opinion why then does anyone replying become, in your opinion, an adversary?
I’m saving the rest for later………

As an ex-serviceman I am ‘fondly’ reminded of this..

“Short words are best and the old words when short are best of all.”

Winston Churchill

Remember in these days……. and in particular ask those who are young to understand.

;)

It would appear that you are determined to become an adversary !!

If you disagree with my point then that’s ok but it looks like you are trying to prove how intellectually superior you are and unwittingly prove my point.

I also suggest you read what I posted again – it’s on a par with criticising spelling when you put words into someone’s mouth and then argue against what they never said in the first place.

At the risk of upsetting some contributors to this forum, there is no excuse for bad spelling; dictionaries are cheap and spell-checkers are free.

A person’s intellect is judged, rightly or wrongly, by his spelling just like his social standing is judged by his clothes or his car. I don’t necessarily agree with this but it is no use pretending otherwise.

I remember a young man with green hair being interviewed on television. He couldn’t understand why he was failing all his interviews. The colour of his hair should have had no bearing on the outcome at all but ………………………..

Mr Owd

I disagree there chap; intellect is not judged by good or bad spelling – it’s what you have to say that determines your effective intelligence.

There has been banter on the board recently and those that engaged knew exactly what was going on (as they had the wit and intelligence to deal with it) however, those that feel the need to jump on every grammatical error or spelling mistake just out of sheer nastiness are merely masking their own inadequacies and showing us their total lack of social skills.

I admire anyone who is prepared to share an opinion, however radical, and back it up with good solid debate – it’s just the nasty trolls that get on my p@ps, the uneducated, ill-informed, back-biting wannabes – as my good ‘ol mum used to say…..”if you have nothing nice to say don’t say it’

So remember the idiom…………….

………………”clothes don’t make the man”

;)
I agree with everything you say and I would never dream of judging a person on his spelling or punctuation but, in my opinion, a lot of people do. There have been many times on this forum when a good argument has been made but the writer has given his adversary the opportunity to attack his spelling rather than his argument. A quick reference to a dictionary or spell-checker would avoid this problem. I must admit that I refer to my dictionary very frequently. It helps to keep the argument on topic and helps me disguise the fact that I am really quite thick.

As Samuel Johnson said “criticising spelling is the last refuge of a scoundrel who is losing an argument” ;)

Dave has well and truly embarked on another meltdown or breakdown whatever you want to call it, the lad is in need of some serious psychiatric aid ! He aint goin on no working holiday he is heading for the Avondale Unit Preston ! For Christs sake Dave get a grip !

It had to happen sooner or later – Dave from Skelm meets “Dave from Whelley”.

They should have listened at school when it was explained that argument is a learning process. Each person putting forward his own carefully constructed and reasoned views before coming to some form of acceptable compromise. The compromise is usually far nearer the truth than either of their original arguments and both have learned something. This process is usually followed by a handshake.

In Dave’s case the process is called “trying to make the other person run home crying”.

It obviously won’t surprise many to learn that I am pro-Martinez. This is not necessarily because I believe him to be the finished article as a coach, far from it in fact.

One of the reasons I give him my support is because I have no great expectation of this club ever having the financial muscleambition to attract the really top players and managers. “Ever”, in this case, meaning as long as Whelan is in control – not a criticism of Whelan, by the way, just a fact.

That being the case, I personally think it unrealistic to except this club to be a regular top 10 team. I think we will always struggle, regardless of the type of football we play, and that being the case I would like to see us fail trying to play football rather scrapping like dogs. That’s just my preference.

Under the not-so-rash assumption that our budgets and transfer strategy will remain the same as in recent seasons, ie buy raw and cheap and sell-on where possible, I would be interested to hear the views of those who want Martinez out to answer the following:-

1) – realistically, approximately what league position do you think Wigan as a club should be aiming to finish on a regular basis?
2) – which manager/managers do you think would/could come in to achieve the level of success you picked in 1)?
3) – how long would you give your preferred manager to achieve the target set in 1) given that you have only given Martinez one season to achieve his given target of surviving.

This is not a loaded or antagonistic question. I am genuinely intrigued to know what people’s expectations are and how they expect them to be achieved.

For me, I would be broadly happy with anything from 16th-10th every year, although obviously the success of one season’s 15th, for example, can be viewed differently to another’s depending on how that particular season panned out. I’d like to think that Martinez can achieve that over the coming years. That said, a few more 8 and 9 drubbings next season might make me change my mind.

Answers on a postcard please.

Until fairly recently, I would have agreed whole-heartedly with all of the above and still agree with 95% of it but now that the season is over and I have had time to reflect, my thoughts are as follows:

1. I am really proud that “little Wigan” is still mixing it with the big boys.

2. I am really impressed with the “business model” adopted by Dave Whelan – it is the only sensible way to go and we should be grateful that we have such a shrewd, local benefactor running our club.

3. I have no real expectation that we will be able to stay in the top flight forever – I just intend to go on enjoying each moment no matter which league we are in.

4. I do think that our present squad is better than any previous ones and look forward to seeing them develop.

5. The wins against Chelsea, Villa, Liverpool and Arsenal were magic moments that will live with me forever.

6. Unlike a lot of posters on here (you know who you are), I can take defeat and forgive failure if it was suffered with honour.

7. I will always support my team through thick and thin but I object to being called a happy clapper. I prefer to keep my darker thoughts to myself and express them only when I have thought them through and when calm/sensible debate is possible.

Now for the other 5% !!!

1. I can take defeat and failure but I have real difficulty accepting embarrassment. The indignities suffered this season have (for me) overshadowed the “magic moments”. I have witnessed some dark days in the past but I can’t remember being as acutely embarrassed as I was after the Tottenham game and latterly the Chelsea debacle.

2. As previously stated, I think this is the most talented squad we have ever had so it follows that Roberto must be responsible for my deep depression.

I have come to the conclusion that Roberto must modify his “devil may care” attitude to playing football and become more realistic; bring in an experienced top flight assistant; learn from his many mistakes quickly or GO NOW.

owd? he was with me at the brum game as he his my brother so why would he call me a keyboard warrior as i see him every other day. silly old fool!

Like all the rest of the proletariat (look it up), you are not very bright are you. Asking the likes of you and your brother to show a little class is like asking you to explain the principles of calculus (look that up as well). Go on then, threaten me again or call me another hurtful name – it is your answer to everything.

I love on here how there are two sides. I think the Martinez fan club are clueless about football and laugh when there only defence is that you must be a chubster when you voice your opinions.

Why dont we all get together and have a drink and a chat and debate on all matters. I would imagine this would be a good evening.

I would love to put faces to names and see who is who and then get someone to explain without laughing that Martinez is commited, learning and the right man.

It would be interesting though to see who turned up and had these discussions.

I would be there and in the Martinez out corner. Standish would be good to have there as he is deluded but puts up a good argument in the other corner.

Anybody think its a good idea?

I think it would be a brilliant idea. It is obvious from your first paragraph that you are completely open-minded (like a lot more on here) and an evening of good natured, reasoned debate, is therefore guaranteed. Rest assured that I will be willing to postpone or cancel any prior social engagements to participate. Please let me know when and where and I will be there (as long as it doesn’t clash with Coronation Street! )

Regards

Git

So in summary Loudmouth you believe that Wigan Athletic’s rightful place is mid table nestled in just behind the likes of Villa, Spurs, Everton and City

I believe that given that we have one of the smallest transfer budgets in the division, the smallest crowds in the division, therefore the smallest gate reciepts, one of the poorest chairman, Kilby at Burnley is worth £4million, the rest are much welthier than Whelan, except perhaps at Pompey. Our current manager has inherited a squad which did finish in mid table a year ago but half of that team was sold off in January and the summer and a fraction of it put back in because Whelan is paying off debts because the club can’t sustain the outgoings. Well we aren’t doing too bad after five seasons

You clearly hate Roberto but don’t seem to offer any solutions as to who should be the manager, Mourinho, Van Gaal or Rijkaard perhaps?? and what miracles they should be expected to work under such tight financial restrictions. Maybe you’d like Steve Bruce back, I’m sure he could do a good job, maybe if we trebled his transfer budget and wage bill, gave him a £30m strike force and another 20,000 fans, he might have been…oh that’s right a whole two points further on than Roberto.

Seeing as you hate the manager so much to call him a tosser, and instead of repeating the same old diatribe over and over again on here while some of us are trying to support the club whilst recognising the situation we are in. I suggest you put your money where your mouth is and get down to Christopher Park along with Vat69 with your Martinez Out banner. Get yourself on Sky Sports. Sorry that you’ve given up, a football club is about ups and downs. It seems some on here have such delusions of grandeur that they seem to think Wigan Athletic is now too precious to suffer any downs any more and would rather spit their dummies than try and support the club to help them turn it around.

I respect your opinion and know I’m not going to change it, nor Tyldesley or any others of the dark side but your criticisms of Roberto seem to centre around the fact he has lost points, how many points did Steve Bruce lose from January last season? How many points did Jewell lose when we nearly got relegated. You are criticising him for going to Everton, Stoke and Sunderland and not winning?? That would be Everton with 120 years history now challenging for Europe, Stoke who can afford to spend £12m on Huth and Tuncay and Sunderland who are owned by a billionaire not a market stall owner done well? Get real, he’s not perfect and he’s making mistakes but he is probably the only manager we could afford. I don’t know whether he’ll turn it around but like it or not we are where we are, scrapping near the bottom with the clubs like Bolton, Blackburn, Hull, Burnley etc – all of whom are miles bigger than us in terms of infrastructure, history and fanbase and if the smallest club in the premier do manage to stay up it will be a real achievement, again.

Great post but you sound like James Joyce trying to explain the finer points of Ulysses to Tweedle-Dum. May I suggest you are wasting your time and would be better off going for a brisk walk.

Can you imagine going in to battle with some of this lot? Morale would be sky-high wouldn’t it?

PS Notice who has assumed the role of Tweedle-Dee? (clue: he comes from Skelm)

Well Griff sarcastically or not admitted to being a pedant and I merely told him his pedantry was misplaced on me ! Perhaps you my old friend are being a little too analytical ! But I can see what your attempting and to be quite frank with you it wont wash with me !! Go and try to pull someone else up on their grammar ! My earlier post obviously had no bearing on you whatsoever !

It was my attempt at humour and nothing more. I’m obviously not very good at it!
