I think that is a good shout as I was thinking something similar.
However, then I remembered what his nickname was in his playing days – “the crab”.
His sideways passing background should fit in with our style of play perfectly
His nickname was `Butch`[/quote]
He was known as Butch but he was also called “The Crab”

I’m an optimist ;)
I fear for us on Saturday against those long ball merchants Sjoke.
Having said though it may be a game where Steven Caldwell is in his element as all he’ll be doing all day is trying to head long balls out of the box instead of dealing with tricky pacey forwards
I think certainly some help is bar minimum. But seeing as Roberto is so stubborn I doubt he would accept it.
I couldn’t get to the game last night so listened to it on the radio, but one thing Alan Pardew said about us and this has been said many times before, is how long it took Martinez to make any changes in personnel and in formation.
Obviously I can’t really comment not having been there last night, but why didn’t we just go all attack last night, bearing in mind Arsenal’s leaky defence?
That Kosecielny must be one of the worst defenders and worst signings of the season yet we didn’t put him under any pressure
In my opinion we have arguably got the best squad we’ve ever had, but we’re just not getting the best out of them.
We’ve got wingers in our team, we’ve got decent central midfielders and I’m sure we could find a combination out of Boselli,Rodallega and Di Santo which could get our scoring rate up.
Why can’t we try a different formation to see what happens? Surely the fact we can retain position so well doesn’t mean it will all go to pot if we play 4-4-2?
I think Saturday could be a Save Our Season game for us the way things are going because if we don’t start picking up points and looking like we can put the ball in the back of the net, I fear we’ve had it.
January is just around the corner and we don’t want to be in a position where all the decent rats are looking to desert the ship!
Does anyone really believe that Whelan will stand by what he said about keeping Bob even if he takes us down? Dave is a businessman and he won’t want to see tens of millions go down the drain with us being relegated.
I think if things haven’t improved in the next couple of games, the wind of change could very well be blowing through the DW.
There will be no more than three or four youth/reserve team players in Arsenal’s squad.A change of keeper, one in midfield and perhaps one in defence. The others will be on the bench. Arsenal are desperate to win somethng this year.
I don’t care if Arsenal play their strongest eleven we still have a chance of beating them on their own patch. West Brom (although a lot more free scoring than us!) put three past them and so did Spurs.
If we go about this game in the right way we can get a result.
Tomorrow night could be a pivotal point of our season. We either go down there with some belief and attack Arsenal with the aim of getting a positive result or we sit back as we have done a lot this season and go out with a whimper.
I don’t subsribe to the theory that if we go out and attack Arsenal we’ll get whalloped. Arsenal have shown on several occasions that they are incredibly fragile at the back. If we don’t get at them then we will be inviting pressure and with the way our back four played on Saturday we will crumble.
I would abandon 4-5-1 tomorrow and go 4-4-2 with Di Santo and Boselli in attack. Di Santo does plenty of running around like a headless chicken so he is more than capable of defending from the front and Boselli can feed off any scraps that come his way. Those two muppets in the heart of the Arsenal defence are there to be got at. I would also start with Moses and drop Gomez.
Picture the two scenarios. We play some decent attacking stuff and come away with a famous win with our tails up and optimism renewed among our fans.
Or we get tonked 4-0 after playing in a similar vein to Saturday leaving the players deflated for a vital game with Stoke and leaving even the most loyal Bobby fan questioning whether we have the bottle to stay up.
I’m praying it’s the former :?
Wouldn’t want Pollitt to play too many games for us at this stage of his career, but I think his presence in the squad is more about passing on experience to the younger lads than anything else.
Celtic don’t pay wages that big! He’ll be lucky if he’s on half that!
It could always be lazy journalists trying to make interest in the game on Saturday, with Blackburn selling or almost being sold and Whelan being known to want to sell one day, they link them together. No Whelan was obviously interviewed at the Blackburn game on Saturday, which is why my old mate Andy got the full quotes.
I think you’ll find it is lazy national journalists who took out the fact he said he might sell one day to make it look like he put the club up for sale this week.
Si senor
Don’t think Doris has the cash does he?
I’m afraid when Mr Whelan does decide to call it a day it will be a very sad day indeed for our football club.
But I think we need to be a bit realistic about who is likely to buy our club. I don’t think anyone looking to make a quick buck is going to be interested as we quite simply don’t have the fan base or the history to maximise merchanising revenues etc.
I mean do you think any of our players have mega bucks image rights deals? I don’t see us flying out to the Far East to give our millions of Chinese fans a glimpse of our passing football under Bob. When was the last time we filled our ground? We simply don’t have the fanbase to be an attractive buy.
The only way our club is sustainable is if we have someone of the ilk of Dave Whelan who loves the club and is prepared to subsidise us. Even then we are always going to be a selling club trying to balance the books by good housekeeping. Unless of course some billionaire comes in and decides to play Fantasy Football with Little Wigan to see if he can turn them into Champions League winners.
I hope Uncle Dave stays with us for as long as possible
I don’t think we should panic just yet about Whelan selling the club. He was talking about why he understood the Walker family’s decision to sell Blackburn and that one day he will have to do the same thing – we all knew this would be the case at some point.
Here’s a copy of an article which I think has all of his quotes. I used to work with the journalist who wrote it at my old paper so it is going to be far more accurate than what some hack from the Mirror wrote!
By Andy Cryer » Blackburn Rovers reporter
DAVE Whelan insists Blackburn Rovers’ ‘fantastic history’ will always remain but admits he understands why the club’s Walker Trust owners are preparing the way for a new dawn.
Wigan’s owner believes his side’s Premier League visit to Ewood Park on Saturday is a fitting way to pay his respects to former Rovers team-mate and close friend Ronnie Clayton, who died on Friday aged 76.
As well as another chance for supporters to pay their respects to Clayton, Saturday’s Ewood Park could be the start of a new Rovers chapter.
Indian poultry giants Venky’s are hopeful of completing their £46million purchase of Rovers by the end of the week, with Whelan admitting he sympathises with the club’s current owners.
He said: “It is an unusual situation. There are going to be very few clubs left owned by British people or English people. If Blackburn Rovers get somebody who is prepared to put money into the club I am sure the supporters will be happy.
“I know the Walker family will be happy as well. I will have the same problem here, whether it is this year, next year or three of four years. Because I am not getting any younger.
“It would be unfair of me to pass this club into the hands of my grandchildren. So I will be in the same situation in the next few years that the Walker family are in.
“I have been putting money into this football club which has cost me over 100 million pounds so It is not fair if I pass this football club down to my family.
“That is exactly what has happened at Blackburn Rovers. As Jack Walker put fortunes into Blackburn and I know his family have supported them for many years and time has come for them to stop pumping money into the club. It will happen to me. It is not a pleasant thing when it happens.”
Whelan though is confident Clayton’s memory will live long at Ewood Park having stayed firm friends with the former England skipper ever since playing with him in the late 1950s and early 1960’s.
He said: “Every football club has history and Blackburn Rovers football club has fantastic history. It is one of the founder members of the football league.
“It will be so sad in one way on Saturday but it is exciting in another because we can pay our respects to John Benson and Ronnie Clayton at the same time. That is so fitting for Wigan and Blackburn because they both mean so much to me and to both clubs.
“Ronnie Clayton was a great player and a great man. I am so upset by the news and I wish his family and friends my deepest condolences and sympathies.”
