as i recall (without any references so open to error) …
the previous round included 1-1 away at blackpool (still one of my most favourite away trips)
and a brilliant replay at springfield at which the turnstiles couldn’t cope with the crowd and the kick off was delayed
the game at northwich (when the copper got darted) only got abandoned when we were 3-0 up
– lots of stockport fans turning up for a bit or argy-bargywhen we played it again it was 2-2
– stockport turned up again
before the replay we already knew that we would be playing chelsea and then everton in the next 2 rounds if we got through so about 10,000+ turned up for a crabby 1-0 (possibly) extra time win in very very cold temperatures despite which none of our players wear gloves or tights or any of those snoodle thingsBlackpool away, with the cover still on the old kop.
I have never heard the Latics fans so loud as that day.
We could hear the racket from miles away, and thought it was the home fans, when we got in and realised it was our lot it was a fantastic feeling.
That was THE best away game I’ve ever been to in terms of the following and noise generated.
I think the official attendance for the replay was around 15,000 but I reckon there must have been 20,000 on Springy Park that evening. I remember I had to watch the game from the Springfield end because I couldn’t get round to my usual place on the popular side because it was so packed.
Another massive following then went to Goodison in the next round and the 51,000 or so on that day made it the highest attendance of all the 3rd round matches.Happy days.
Gold is one of the most obnoxious characters ever to own – or part own – a football club.
When anyone feels the need to complain about Whelan and his running of this football club just take a deep breath and think themselves lucky that someone like Gold isn’t in charge. The man has the morals of a sewer rat.Now I’m really going back…..
Altrincham away and I’m stood behind the goal Latics were attacking with my mate who says, “If we score, are we on the pitch?”, to which I answered, “Yeh, lets do it”.
Sure enough we score and on runs my mate, on his own, with me pi$$in’ my sides at him jumping around like an idiot. Billy Sutherland grabs hold of him and says in his gruff Scottish voice, “For f**k sake sonny, get off the f**king pitch.
Exit one embarrassed teenager.Southampton away in the FA Cup – 1986 I think. All those who went down on the train were put in the cattle pen and made to wait prior to boarding for the journey home. Everyone, and I mean everyone, started mooing and bleating to such a level that that stopped the passing traffic.
At least he managed to keep it 11 against 11 this time.
A couple of weeks ago I was asked by someone who has contacts within the club and had seen my constant anti Martinez posts on here if I would like the opportunity to put a selection of written questions directly (via this contact) to Roberto Martinez at an up- coming meeting between him and a selection of the press and message board representatives.Originally I agreed to do so and wrote a number of my concerns with the intention of sending them to the intermediary, but when I thought about it I decided not to, partly out of respect for the part Martinez played in our recent history and also I really thought it would be counter – productive at a time of low morale and despite my rants on here I would love to be proved wrong in my belief that he is not up to the task he has been appointed to do.
I also believe, and have voiced this opinion before on here, that Whelan took a calculated decision when he appointed Martinez and he would become the sacrificial lamb.
David Whelan was in a no lose situation, when he began downsizing WAFC and preparing for his ultimate exit – in Roberto he had given the people their champion and all the blame when things started to go wrong would not come knocking on his door, and this is why I feel sorry for Martinez and decided to not try and rock the boat so to speak. If the person who originally offered me the opportunity to ask some questions does happen to read this post I would like one question passed on if it is not too late, despite all the things I have just said it is one that I feel is needed and a burning question that I feel everybody, even his loyalist defenders wants to ask.
Roberto do you find it acceptable that we can play a full 90 + minutes of football without making the opposition goal keeper make a save of any significance as is happening more and more with your set up and how your teams play ?
Aww eh……
What a noble gesture. I think you’re warming to him.Did anyone else on here think we would get absolutely zilch from this game? West Ham were tagging this as a “Save Our Season” game for Christ’s sake and it’s only November!
Had Boselli put that penalty away West Ham would have panicked, defended the lead and we could quite easily have come away with a draw, at the very least.
Nevermind, things could be worse. We could have been a top 10 team losing to a second from bottom club or an established Premiership club losing heavily at home to a newly promoted club, tipped to be relegated.
It only November. Get a grip people. You seriously think he doesn’t see that the players are playing shyte? I couldn’t care less what he says to Sky TV. It’s what he and his team says/does behind closed doors that counts.I’m not saying that he’s doing that all that well, mind…
Understatement of the year that, Mr Griff.
I live on a busy road in one of Wigans `posher areas`(not braggin like)
Anyroad, last year between 21 Dec and 8 Jan the road was sheet ice.I read in t`Observer and t`Reporter that my road had been gritted on the 21st,23rd,28th,30th,4th,5th,6th,7th,8th….I emailed t`council and called them lying b@st@rds,as the road hadnt been gritted at all between these dates. They didnt reply!…………I love `new Labour`!!
Like I said, already gritted twice down my road. Must be more important than yours :D
Or perhaps they weren’t sent an e-mail calling them lying b@st@rds from anyone in your street!Did they not realize that they had to win !! We get more players in the box than they did tonight ! With 20mins to go they should have gone for it, s h i t or bust with nothing to lose ! 3 fresh players on would have got the crowd really buzzin but no !! Speculate to accumulate Jim my son !!
Like most of the Rangers games, they were just waiting for the ref to give them a dodgy goal / penalty so they could win it. In europe they dont get it. :)
Better not let the Scottish referees hear you say that or they’ll be going on strike! For a start I’d write off all 3 carling cup games as they saw much changed sides put out & its highly unlikely we were ever going to get polished performances from players who’ve rarely played together before as a unitThree games Latics won by the way.
I wonder if that had any bearing on what the opposition fans had to say?perhaps you are correct jimmy – my THEORY is based on reading all the fanzine sites after we have played them, and the opinion of the fans on them, we even got slated off hartlepool, preston and swansea fans, who all 3 sets of fans thought we were rubbish.
political posters such as gallup or mori dont interview everybody in the country to come up with their predictions but they tend to be pretty much correct – i am using the same basis for my statement.Deary me!
@SAMMY- To be quite honest, it’s not him, it’s the songs that he’s doing. Strange choices for a bloke of his age, really. I couldn’t believe he even attempted that Celine Dion one. The response he gets is basically good….from the people that ‘hang off’ everything he does. I think they remember him from the Riverside days, and are longing to hold on to at least some ‘tradition’. But with what he’s doing, his best days are long gone.I’m stunned that GGLC are booking him for NYE. You would’ve thought they could’ve booked better. Or maybe it’s all they can afford? This could be a further sign that they are struggling. He’s all pally with the committee, and I’ll bet he’s going at a reduced rate. Even so, I bet they’ll be paying him and his two backing musicians around £1000 at least.
Goose Green was once the top club in the local area, and for some miles. Not now. It’s no different to any other. Tired decor, and yesterdays dreams….. :lol
I can’t say I’ve heard him since his Riverside days. I assume he’s still doing the same routine, getting people up from the audience and taking the p!zz, and his “following” still find that entertaining. Not too sure why he would attempt a Celine Dion song though unless he’s been asked to.
If GGLC can’t get a decent crowd in on NYE, with or without JM, then it really is a poor show but I would guess there will be a fair few in that night.
Yes, the club has seen better days and is in need of a major makeover. You wouldn’t want to stand still on the carpets in there for any length of time, you might never walk again!
You’re not Ian Holloway by any chance are you Micky? I just needed to ask like.
Well, he was on a few weeks back and they were bigging him up beforehand. I got told “It’ll be packed” so I went along for a look. Nope, there were 170 in, tops. He spent the first song turning around and lambasting his keyboard player to change the key. (Waving his hand up and down at him Had I been keyboard player I’d have played one handed, flicking V’s with the other one at the whispy-haired cnut. )
He then murdered Celine Dion’s “All By Myself” (He nearly was) and then did an obscure Shirley Bassey song.
After about 5 songs, he started to get people up out the ‘crowd’ singing, which is all fine and well, but if I were a club and an act did that when they were being paid about £500, I’d be like:“Wow there! We’re paying YOU to sing, not the audience!”
No wonder clubs are dying, deary me. Perhaps it’s the management and committe’s that need changing.
He must be losing it then. Still, 170 isn’t bad for GGLC.
