I was in Walkabout that night, from early on, when the players arrived, until around about 8pm, when it started getting stupid, with a load of hangers-on coming in. People who hadn’t even been the game, but wanted a piece of our success.
I heard one woman, deckout out in replica shirt, face-painted, with ribbons in hair, etc, looking like a massive fan, asking her bloke “Which one’s Alan Mahon? Which one’s John Filan?” etc. It was cringeworthy. I had enjoyed it initially, mixing with all the players, and chatting to them. Funniest thing was John Filan getting a load of drinks in, and carrying them all back with his huge two hands (a bottle on each finger!) Class! Roberts, with his ‘posse’ was class, as well.
But you could tell the numpties were coming out in force, and so I made my escape, just as loads were turning up and shouting their mouths off. (I bet that nipple who fell through Maloney’s canopy was one of them)
From the moment the final whistle blew that day, and a load of carumbas (remember that fat slaphead, with no top on?) ran on the pitch, I was realising that promotion had it’s minuse’s, as well as plus points. :(
See, someone else who obviously takes notes!
Can someone remind me what the first symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease is again?
You may have the advantage over me here JR being a JCL and all that – but can you refresh my memory of when they beat us 5 – 3 in the cup or was it in the 60s or 70s
I remember us beating them 5-3 in the league but Roy H wasnt their manager as I recall
Anyway Roy for manager of the year for me
Blackburn beat us 5-3 in the cup (or was it 4-2?) in the cup when John Deehan was manager in 1998. Its the game where Deehan pulled his tactical master strokes of dropping his top scorer (David Lowe), changing his formation to 4-5-1, switching David Lee to the left wing & Jorg Smeets to the right (we have another manager who favours that too!!) & dropping our left back for the season up till then (Kevin Sharp) in favour of someone who hadn’t played in donkey’s (Steve Morgan).
Went 4-0 down before he reverted back to the team & formation he’d used all season & we pulled 2 goals back & had a blatant penalty turned down (for which the Blackburn player should have been sent off).
John Deehan described his initial tactical masterplan as a success coz Blackburn hadn’t “scored from any corners”!!!!Come to think of it, compared to John Deehan, our Bobby is a footballing genius!!! ;)
How do you remember all that? Did you take notes?I was at the game and the only thing I remember was Colin Hendry letting Graeme Jones win everything in the air. The reason why has now become obvious, so thanks for that.
I think a reputed £45k per week could also be a problem.
Edit: Mr TrueLatic stole my thunder…!

Can nobody sense sarcasm on here?
Not if we’re talking about West Ham!
Shipping 69 goals and with only Hull and Burnley shipping just a few more I think it would be safe to say that he needs a defensive coach next season plus a couple of decent defenders !That wasn’t necessarily down to problems with the defence but more a issue regarding the attitude of the team as a whole, which seemed to get better as the season went on.
Maybe they read into the conspiracy theory that a lifelong West Ham fan missed a penalty that kept them in the top flight.Wonder how much Dame Trevor paid him
He’s a much better player than I thought then if his deliberate penalty miss involved him slamming it against the post…!
Run with the foxes, hunt with the hounds!
Rip off you cry?
Yet their fans still pay it.Exactly. That’s why it would have been unfair to dock them points over the Tevez affair.
McCarthey , Victor,stevie 8-)
Bruce signed McCarthy didn’t he? At ground other match I was thinking that Martinez did, but I was assured by somebody that Bruce was indeed the one that signed him….?
No. Martinez was the manager when McCarthy signed for Latics.Says a lot about the modern day Premiership player when he has the means to buy a Bentley before he can legally drive it.
From my own personal point of view I think this season has been terrible. Yes we achieved Dave Whelan’s only goal of staying up but we’ve had to endure some horrendous football, horrendous performances, horrendous tactics, horrendous subsititution decisions. In between all that we’ve had 3 great performances against Villa, Chelsea & Liverpool & 10 awesome minutes against Arsenal.
You may well think that 10 minutes of great football on Sunday makes up for 2870 minutes of rubbish but I don’t and, personally, I don’t think that anyone shouldSurely you don’t go to football matches and expect to be entertained, do you?
From The Mirror today (so it must be true):Wigan striker Hugo Rodallega is set to snub a move to the Premier League’s elite as he feels he has a better chance of playing by joining a team outside the top four.
We’re outside the top four, so no need to move then. Cool! Next!
Not so cool if you are banking on him being our main strike threat next season, whichever league we are in!
He breaks a leg a week last Friday.I give him a lift to the Portsmouth game and he watches 90 minutes of dross.
He goes to the Birmingham v Hull game hoping that Blues win, and again watches 90 minutes of dross.
He misses the Arsenal match because there’s no one to give him a lift.
Poor, poor Brummie Dave.
No sympathy I’m afraid. He’s obviously jinxed.
I think the message here is that he should stop going to football matches.Maybe Arsenal took things too easily after going 2-0 up. Maybe bringing on Moses and switching Rodallega to the middle were the key. Maybe we got lucky with our equaliser. Maybe N’Zogbia got lucky with the winner going in off the post.
Who cares!
Just enjoy the fact that it was a fantastic end to a match which will live forever in the memory of every Latics fan who was fortunate to be there.
I think all this Scharner bashing (oo-er) is a tad disappointing. He’s been a good servant to the club and had some memorable games, even in mid-field. He’s had his time and maybe he’s just as frustrated as the rest of us in the way the club is heading – no pun intended – under Martinez.
