Just a point, since Bobby we have favoured anything but 4-4-2 so is it right to expect to revert back for one game and demand it clicks immediately?. As for Joyce,s comment about it not working, well statistics show his way is certainly not working so what do we do?
Only 3 Premier League team, and less than half of the Championship teams play a 4-4-2 formation these days, so the chances are most of the players in the squad will be more than used to playing in teams with a lone striker.
The formation has little to do with the results in my opinion. It’s more due a lack of pace and some players simply being not good enough for this level.
When big Dave goes to that Wembley in the sky, Sharpie will have them fat chubby egg chasing cuckoos out !
He t’owd me so in’t Rigbye Arms, after several pints of specky hen.I reckon he’ll sell up or even give the club away. He’s a young lad and wont want to see his inheritance being spent on subsidising the Latics to the tune of £5 million+ a year. Grandad’s money wont last long if he did.
The club is going nowhere.Like his granddad, Sharpe loves the fame and prestige that being a football club chairman gives him.
He has too much money invested in the club and buyers wouldn’t exactly be queueing up.
No I think we played a version of the Wolves, Nob End and QPR games.
I know what you mean though.
I suppose it’s just a way to cry out for us to be positive and as you rightly say formations don’t matter much it’s really about getting the ball in the opposition’s box and net.
I am blinkered though from that period of football that took us through the leagues and also in the past before that even when we were shit we used to go at sides and it felt like we had tried to win.
This lot nowadays is just so boring. We did play 4-4-2 at Rotherham and Joyce has highlighted how it didn’t work.
For recent games we’ve been playing something akin to 4411, but I don’t think the role suits Grigg.
Sorry guys but how do play 4-4-2 using wing backs? Just coz we have 2 strikers on the field doesn’t mean we are going 4-4-2. That’s been our failing we need to revert to a flat back four thus asking your full backs to be just that. Many of the goals we concede are from balls in from the channels or from long punts up field. Lets shore it up at the back and get players playing in their comfort zone. Time to stop expecting average players to play Premier league football. Obviously its just my opinion
You aren’t allowed one on that subject. Some contributors don’t like it.
Everyone’s allowed an opinion. Not everyone has to agree with it though – that’s the whole point of a forum.Yes Nuneaton Tic. Strange because it works and is interesting to watch. And you’re basing that theory on what?
Said it for a while ._.We need a fresh start with new owners the whelans have done their bit too be proud off
But thats behind us now._.Under this current regime have we had our most relegations if we go down this year._and all because of incompetent management by selling our best and replacing with shyte
Thing is who would buy us ? Thats the bottom line nobody would where fxxxxd and stuck with failed fish fryerAs much as you take the piss and call Sharpe ‘Chippy Boy’, ‘Fish Fryer’ or whatever other chip-shop related jibe you can think of, his family bailed the club out of the mire, and he and JJ are keeping it relatively self-sufficient.
Nobody other than a millionaire Wiganer would invest in us because we’re not an attractive proposition.
I’m happy that I have a local football club to support, and if that’s in League One, then so be it.
Is playing the knobbers a bigger game than bolton? what do you think?Nowhere near as big (although the Leyland/Chorley posters will disagree)
Cheers for that Donny. Not living in Preston, we don’t get much info on them ;)Why Simon Grayson masks? Won’t exactly upset or offend us and am not sure how it would inspire the players either. Just seems stupid.

It’s the future ;)
State the obvious. Course we haven’t got the quality of those three but we have a couple of strikers who could play together or off each other and a proven winger so attacking the opposition could be an option.Theirin lies an option other than this dire tripe that gets pushed on us week in week out. We were forced to watch Caldwell’s shite this season and everyone noticed we aren’t exactly Barcelona either.Judging by last night (30% possession, 1 shot on goal with two strikers) that two-up-top shite doesn’t work.
Lets go for three, no, in fact four strikers!
I have thought of one. After being promoted from div 3 there was a pitch invasion and everyone in the stadium pretty much gathered around the players tunnel. The pundit of the time for the North West was Elton Welsby and i believe he had been non too complimentary about the Latics and he appeared out of the tunnel whilst the joyous crowd was chanting for the players etc and this mon Welsby popped up arm aloft with a grin on his face like he was the Queen or something expecting some kind of heroes welcome i presume only to be greeted by thousands chanting ‘Welsby is a wanker’ his face soon dropped and he was never seen again.
He felt it necessary to apologise for having our promotion clinching game against Mansfield on ITVs Kick Off program. He said people had complained that they were showing a 4th division match as their featured game.
He gatecrashed one of our office Christmas parties at The Midland in the early 90s.Was chatting up one of the girls at the bar and tried to impress her by telling her he presented a football programme on TV – to which she replied ‘Are you Saint or Greavesy?’
He didn’t stay long.
5-3 against Port Vale at Springfield Park in 1979.
3-0 down with 20 minutes to go.
I was 9 and it’s the first game I remember as a kid as my dad was laughing at all the Wigan fans who’d left, swearing and vowing never to come back (somethings never change), then trying to get back into the ground as the Wigan goals started to go in.
Certainly a big improvement when we went 442 second half, but then again just about anything would have been an improvement on the first half!
We’re “officially” in the drop zone now and given the next 3 fixtures the task looks very tough. Bogle looks like he could be a real handful, IF he gets the support.
Surely Yootha will now go 442 at least at home
Except it wasn’t 4-4-2, it was still 4-5-1. Certainly Grigg played further forward to support the striker (which is how it should work, Jacobs has just not been up to the job in the past), but we did not have 2 up front alongside each other.
Added to which the risk of 4-4-2 of a depleted midfield was lessened by Bogle running his little socks off and dropping back, even into defence when needed.
We have a gem, that just now needs to get up to Championship pace (eg the offsides against better defences than he has faced up to now).
We were laughing about this on the way back to the Brick after the game. The goals came from a free kick and a corner, it wasn’t 442, and I don’t recall Grigg and Bogle linking up at any point – but still we’ll have people last night/this morning claiming that 442 is the way forwards.
PS. Dan Burn was MOM for me last night. I thought he was outstanding.
Seeled are relagation
3 out of 3! Well done!
An actual lol on reading that one!I read an interesting article today a Grimsby fans view of Omar Bogle and they reckon he’s a better forward when he’s playing along side the smaller type forward. They mention Padraig Amond and his partnership with Bogle were Amond hit 30 goals from 40 games.
I wonder if this is Joyces next move, Grigg & Bogle ? will be interesting to see considering both players seem to need another forward by their side.
How do you know Grigg needs another player by his side?
