You failed to mention the other chuckle brother gary at best he is a mid table championship centre half not premiership standard put a young strong mobile centre half alongside alcaraz and we will be ok at the back next season.

In my opinion, Gary Caldwell’s major failing is his lack of speed/mobility – He reads the game well, gets stuck in etc.. & does pretty much everything else to a decent enough standard for a club at Latics level/ambition
The major problem with Latics centre half partnership in my opinion is Alcaraz. Now he has the speed/mobility & is better on the ball but he seems to have little or no footballing brain. he reminds me very much of a primary school footballer in that he gets sucked in to wherever the ball is as opposed to paying any attention to whatever else is going on around him. Every time I see him play there are head in the hands moments but a few that stick in the mind are:

the game where him & Steve Caldwell nearly came to blows when Steve Caldwell quite rightly pulled him to task on about the 3rd or 4th occasion Alcaraz had deserted his post in the middle & left Caldwell trying to mark 2 players. The actual incident that sparked it was Alcaraz going to the left back spot to challenge a player that Figueroa was already marking
the game at Old Trafford. Aside from being a dumb challenge in general (although for my money Fletcher was “going down” before there was any contact), Latics centre half should not be 40 yards from goal, heading away from his penalty area to challenge an opposition midfielder down the left wing
the away defeat at Sunderland. I think its the 3rd or 4th goal which was a breakaway down the left wing. Gary Caldwell was covering the guy with the ball & Alcaraz was in the middle with a Sunderland player not far away from him when for some reason he decided to drift over to the area Caldwell was already in, leaving the Sunderland player free in the middle, the winger picked him out & he smashed it home

They’re not isolated incidents either – you wath any latics game back from last season & you’ll see Alcaraz doing that at numerous points during the game. If he irons that out of his game then he’d be a belter but for me it indicates a lack of a footballign nouse & that isn’t somet that’s easily coached

A centre half who did impress me on the few brief occasions we saw him last season was Piscu & i hope that he replaces one of them (Alcaraz or Caldwell) as a first choice centre half next season – although if I remember rightly Piscu was only signed until the end of the season so there’s no guarantee that he’ll even be at Latics next season

Maybe im being unfair but English league for English teams?

There have been Welsh teams in the english leagues pretty much ever since it expanded beyond the one professional division so it’d be a bit much now telling em all to beggar off

And whilst we’re at it, there are English teams playing in the welsh league system (TNS play in Oswestry) & in the Scottish league system (Berwick)

Don’t think so. On Tuesday, when asked if he would consider bringing in experienced players coming towards the end of their careers, Roberto said that part of the club’s philosophy is to bring in young players, develop them as players (assets) and sell them on later for a profit. It’s the only way for a club like us to survive at this level.

As he wasn’t kicked under the table by Jonathan Jackson for saying this, I presume it is accepted policy.

And I think that its a perfectly reasonable & acceptable policy for them to have
I do however think that the clubs needs to have some sort of limit or line in the sand when it comes to who or (to be more exact) how many are flogged off.

Going purely off newspaper speculation so far (& I know that’s hardly an accurate measure but stories will be started by agents or clubs hoping to spark a sale so it’ll be a good indication if not who the club are looking to sell but which players are trying to force a move) then the club could potentially be looking at saying toodle pip to N’Zogbia, Rodallega, McCarthy & Diame. All this would bring in a pretty penny but all have, if not all season then for part of it, been vital links for Latics & to have to replace them all & hit the ground running next season would be a hell of an ask especially when you also consider that Cleverley & Al Habsi have also gone

At a push i think the club should look to move on 1 or 2 players at the end of each season to keep the club aflot & to bring in new players but to possibly look at having to replace 6 is way too much in my opinion

    Same report in the Guardian

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/may/25/roberto-martinez-wigan-athletic

That’s a very flattering picture of Bobby on the Guardian’s website!!! I bet he’s chuffed to buggery that they chose that one

in reply to: N’Zogbia’s next move #66676
So we are now moving onto the likes of Everton, Fulham, Stoke,Villa. Are their aspirations any differnet to our own for next season? The prospect of bigger crowds, for sure this will be a factor. I feel however that Charlie would consider staying on with us if we can show some type of committment on the clubs part to progress.

A move to Blackburn, Newcastle and Sunderland, who have all been mentioned again recently for me is a step backwards for our maestro.

I think you need to take a bit of a reality check Area51.
Every single one of those clubs you mention is a step up from Latics
Everton – will be expecting to challenge for a UEFA cup spot
Fulham – have played in European finals, finished in the top 10, are in Europe again next season & have a wealthy backer who puts his money where his not inconsiderable mouth is
Stoke – only wound up finishing 4 points above Latics but reached a cup final, are playing in europe next season & have a chairman willing to sanction (relatively) big money moves & (relatively) big wages
Aston Villa – didn’t have the best of seasons by their expectations but will expect to push for the UEFA cup spots next season & have a chairman willing to sanction £24mill moves for players
Sunderland – a mid season collapse this time out but still finished in the top half & have the financial backing to try & improve on that
Newcastle – Again finished above Latics & have the Andy Carroll money burning a hole in Pardew’s pocket to try & improve
Blackburn – I’ll probably give you that one as a kind of sideways step but purely coz I can’t get my head round their new owners who talk of pushing for the champions league & making moves for Kaka or whoever & then sack Allardyce & appoint Keen. If they put their money where their mouths are it makes em both bigger & more ambitious than Latics

For all Bobby’s talk of pushing for a top 10 finish next season, from past experience we know we have a chairman who is happy with surviving. Its likely that (whilst I agree they may make moves to try & retain N’Zogbia) our best players will be sold & cheaper replacements brought in. Nowt wrong with that if it ensures the club’s survival.
The club was sold to N’Zogbia as a stepping stone & in his eyes that will mean the chance to earn more money & in a team less likely to be in a relegaton scrap

So if you put that much stock on the need for a manager to make progress from the season before, why do you think a 37 year old manager who’s record reads 92 points in League One in 2007/8, 68 points in the Championship in 2008/9, 36 points in the Prem in 2009/10 and 42 points in the Prem in 2010/11 is not the right man for Wigan Athletic in the long-term?

Because going off my opinion of his track record of signings & the players who are likely to leave this summer I think its gonna be one hell of a job to keep up that momentum of progress

in reply to: The arrogance of Manure #66537

The reporter was doing his job in trying to get a story for his paper
Alex Ferguson was doing his job by trying to ensure that the only focus ahead of their biggest game of the season is on the football & nto on what one of his players may or may not have done with a z list “celebrity”

The reporter knew exactly what he was doing with that question & he should accept any consequences of asking it.
Ferguson’s only mistake in my opinion was showing his irritation (& what he wanted doing about it) whilst the press were still about & he was miked up – so he’s wound up making himself look a bit of an mardy bum

in reply to: Especially for jrfatfan #66536
Seeing that this was posted “especially for jrfatfan”, I suppose I’d better respond.

I have said in an earlier post that I’m not the type to gloat or ask for apologies etc. from any Darkside, following our team staying up and more importantly the passion shown by Martinez, Whelan and all the players at pitch side Sunday towards our beloved team.
It brought a shiver down my spine and a tear to my eye.

However, your post TL whilst being a bit cap in hand, still baffled me when reading these words:-

Looking at last season against this season, they’ve won the same amount of games, drawn more, lost less, scored more, conceded less, got a better goal difference by almost 50% & 17% more points. That is progress in anybody’s book

To be fair to myself whilst I have always said that I don’t think Bobby is the right man for the job long term (& I still don’t TBH)

Be it slow progress, it is progress and to say Martinez is not the right man for the job, is IMHO, being very short-sighted.
I and many others will look for further progress next year and judge the manager, players, chairman etc. on how we do progress. I still get the feeling that with your little comment in brackets, you’ve once again written him off already and its given you that little something of “I told you so” to fall back on if things go paps up next season. [TBH]

I’ve never claimed that anything I say makes any sense jrfatfan!!!! ;) ;)
My original post wasn’t really meant to be anything other than a light hearted well done for proving me wrong Bobby post – especially in light of the thread we were postign on the other week
My comment in brackets was no more meant to be a “I told you so” fall back any more than it was meant to be a “I’m sticking my head above the parapet for the lightside to have a pop at next season if he continues to make progress”
You are spot on in that this season Bobby has progressed the team from the season before – it may be slow but if he gets the same percentage progress next season (points wise) it’ll have Latics pushing for that top half finish.
Do I think he’s capable of getting that progress or indeed any progress on last season (especially in light of the players who are likely to leave)? I’m honest enough to say that I don’t but I’m being more than a little previous as no-one knows who will go & who will arrive – in light of Bobby proving me wrong twice maybe I should have learnt my lesson so I’ll take the following smileys advice :shhh: :shhh:

I would like to point out however that my point the other week about (some) lightsiders being just as bad as (some) darksiders when it comes to “we told you so/where are you all now” posts was proven come Sunday evening/Monday morning!! ;)

in reply to: Especially for jrfatfan #66535
TL, I could be very wrong but maybe it is your belief that Martinez is not the right man for the job long-term is what made EL question the expectation of the darkside.

I am wondering, if you had the person you desired as our manager, what would you expect him to achieve in the next 3 years at Wigan?

“I judge a manager’s season as a success if they have made progress from the season before” :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:

i don’t think Bobby will achieve that. Then again I didn’t think he would keep us up in his first season & he proved me wrong. I didn’t think that we’d stay up last season or that the team would progress in the way it I highlighted in my first post & he proved me wrong.
Long may that continue :happy-partydance: :happy-partydance:

Its a shame that some people still seem to believe their criticism of the team was the right way forward.

For one I believe we should support no matter what, and being positive through the season was a better way to approach life and supporting the latics. But each to their own.

Am sure once we make our first signing and give away our first goal in pre-season, they will be back to criticise.

For now we should all enjoy. When are the fixtures out :)

Edinburgh – I don’t think its about anyone believing criticism was the “right way forward”
I think its more a case of people believing that on a public internet forum that they are perfectly entitled to say what they think about the team, the manager, players & fellow supporters
Not thinking Martinez was particularly up to the job doesn’t (IMO) make anyone not a true supporter. The club is in our blood & the majority on here would still be Latics supporters if we had gone down, and then gone down again & again
We should, I believe, be able to praise when things are going right & if we do that then we should be able to criticise if things aren’t going right.
There is a world of difference from venting your spleen & frustrations on to a computer & venting it at the players & managers during a game. For all the grief Bobby has had from the “darkside” he has had next to nothing within the stadiums – sure a bit of booing here & there during bad performances but nothing compared to what you’ll hear from supporters of other clubs towards their manager or indeed like other Latics managers have had in the past (John Benson went 20 odd games undefeated at the start of a season & was still getting pelters from the crowd)

Bobby has made mistakes & will continue to do so. I still see him making some of the same mistakes he was making at the start of his reign but I also see him learning from some of those mistakes & addressing them. He’s also kept us in this division for 2 years & progressed from last season to this & I hope he continues to do so

in reply to: Especially for jrfatfan #66446
Makes you think what the expectation is from the Darkside?

I can’t speak for everybody else Edinburgh but I would have thought that my comment “that I judge a manager’s season as a success if they have made progress from the season before” might have given it away!! ;)

in reply to: We won despite Pulis #66410

I think he’s probably referring to the 2 penalties that (I feel) Stoke should have had – he probably thinks they should have been awarded 3

I also read in one of the papers that he was going barmy when the liner disallowed Stoke’s goal for offside but it has to be one of the more blatant one’s you’re ever likely to see

in reply to: Stoppage time yesterday #66409

There is no set amount of time that referees are instructed/supposed to add on for substitutions or cautions
The 30 second thing is a guidance more to clubs as to what they can expect to see added on for certain stoppages
What the referee is supposed to do is stop his watch & then start it again when he is ready for play to resume.

I myself thought 5 minutes seemed excessive but when you look at the substution of N’Zogbia that was made in time added on, that took over a minute & so the ref was spot on in adding the additional minute & 20 seconds on to the 5 minutes

I actually thought Mariner got a few big decisions wrong yesterday – Stoke should have been awarded 2 penalties (the first when Figueroa hacked someone down just inside the area & the second when Alcaraz jumped on to the back of someone – the 3rd claim they had was a good challenge) & Latics should have been awarded one for Pennant’s challenge on N’Zogbia

in reply to: Desperate for Stoke tickets #66057

Whilst it would have been nice to see the club take a gamble on losing out on a bit of cash in case results did not pan out the way they did i think its wrong for them to be taking the majority of the flak

The people who IMO should take responsibility for the low allocation are all those (myself included) who have stayed away from away games over the last few seasons. Like it or not Latics average away attendance is apparently 700 so i don’t think whoever made the decision can be blamed for thinking we might struggle to flog 300-400% more tickets than that
Its unfortunate that some non-season ticket holders who’ve been to a load of away games this season will have probably missed out.
Me? I’d have loved to have gone on Sunday but I can’t exactly complain that I’m unable to go (cockneylatic competition result pending!!!)

As for taking some spare tickets in the stoke part of that stand & re-allocating them to the area by latics & pushing any stoke fans with tickets in that area into spare ones in the other area. Firstly I don’t see how Latics can be blamed for that not being done when its not even Latcis ground, secondly it would be an absolute logistical & admin nightmare & what do stoke do if there’s a group of people who bought tickets together but who would then be moved into seats dotted around that stand & either a) refuse to move or b) demand their money back? Who covers that cost?

Basically the decision has been made, its backfired on the club but I think their reasons for doing it are completely understandable. If you’re that desparate to go enter a competition or buy em in the stoke end

    in reply to: Wow!!!! #65733

That 2nd half was exactly how football should be played every week – none of this cautious tippy tappy malarky, just end to end, fast, direct, full blooded, attack minded “proper” football

On the game as a whole, I thought Latics were the better side throughout but 2 really poor pieces of defending & switching off which is a regular occurrence cost the team dear.
Fair play to Bobby though who I’ve often accused of having no plan b or being able to learn from his mistakes – he had a big call to make at half time & he got it absolutely spot on
