it was Watson’s error that gave them the breakaway for their first goal.
He’s not good enough for the prem.Maybe he isn’t good enough for the prem but it wasn’t Watson’s error that gave them the breakaway for their first goal
It was McCarthy who was tackled/fouled/lost the balll not Watson
easy mistake to make – with 2 gingers in the middle of the park it got a bit confusing at times!!lwhen is everybody going to wake up and smell the coffee and realise that the tic-tac man with the brown shoes stood on the touch line is the reason we are in the last throws of our premiership tenurehe was wearing black shoes last night ;)
From the period I’ve been watching Latics my all time bext XI would be
Al Habsi (before this season it would have been Carroll)
Chimbonda (was superb in our best ever season – what he did after that season finished is irrelevant he is still our best performing right back ever)
Baines
Atherton (only played at a lower level for us but went on to prove he was top flight class)
De Zeeuw
N’Zogbia
Parkinson (again only played at a lower level for us but went on to prove he was top flight class)
Bullard
Valencia
Roberts
Camara (difficult one for me coz I don’t remember Quinn or Newell playing for us so can’t name them. Ellington proved he couldn’t hack it at the top level & so I’m left with Camara or Rodallega & whilst Rod’s probably puts in more graft I want someone who I know if he gets a chance will score & for 1 season that was Camara)Subs:
Carroll, Rodallega, Lowe, Palacios, BeesleyGordon Bennett! Talk about getting carried away by the media tossing off when they change their minds on a weekly basis as to who wins the league or goes down, at Xmas! There’s 13 games left, ample time to get some good points. If there’s 5 games to go it would be more realistic to forecast.
There may well be ample games left but in all reality we aint gonna get doodley squat from 5 of those games.
These 5 games (United, City, Liverpool, Spurs & Chelsea) come in the next 7 fixtures & I think we may get 4 from the other 2 if we’re lucky in that run (Blackburn & Brum). that would put us on 27 points with 6 games left which in all likelihood is going to leave us playing catch up with the other teams in the relegation mire & probably needing to win 3 or 4 of those last 6 games
Considering our wins for the season is currently at 4 from 25 (or 5 from 32 if my predictions are right) its highly unlikely that the team would win that many in so few gamesi think our survival depends on the team completely reversing their form & I see little sign of that
You know, I wonder if SKY Sports hadnt talked about Wigan sitting deep in the second half, how many would be quoting that today? The game was a cracking end to end relegation battle, we should have won but could have easily have lost it. The reason why we defended so much in the second half was West Brom pushed and threw men forward.
Of course the series of misplaced passes and a lack of an outlet up front to hold the ball up and allow us to get out didnt help, but for all the Darksiders we gave it a go last night and it didnt work out. Fitness for McCarthey didnt help us, the back 4 was makeshift, and when Figgy went off it changed the game for us.
If we play like that till the end of the season then we cant say we didnt give it a go. 3 points on Saturday and all will look good again !
The reason many are mentioning it is because we have eyes & can see when a team is sitting back as opposed to being pushed back
I think a further reason many people are mentining it (I certainly am) is in light of Ronnie Stam’s comments in the WEP following the home draw against Fulham when the team also appeared to sit back & try & protect a 1 goal lead (and failed). His comments are on the Wigan Today website but basically were in response to a comment that Fulham pushed the team back & he said somet along the lines of “No they didn’t. That was a deliberate tactic to bring them on to us & then try & work the ball into the space that they’d leave behind them when they pushed forward”
It didn’t work then coz we don’t have the players to play that way & it didn’t work last night eitherIt was an entertaining game I’ll agree but I think the 3 points were in part chucked away due to some poor finishing early in the 2nd half & a change of tactics at half time. when this was combined with West Brom pushing forward to try & get somet out of the game it was only ever gonna lead to us not getting 3 points & in the end it should have been none but for some fine goalkeeping
On another issue – I think Di matteo is getting his knickers in a twist about nothign for the “penalty” that wasn’t given. There has got to be some form of intent for a handball to be given & a defender slicing a clearance up on to his arms, which in turn didn’t move towards the ball nor did they allow him to gain possession of it, is by no means a handball offence
from what I heard & read, McCarthur was superb on Saturday in a second string XI against what was Bolton’s strongest line up
What is his reward for the next game? To be dropped to the bench & even ranked behind Thomas when Bobby decides to make a midfield change – the wrong one as it happens
The same can be said for McManaman who didn’t even make the bench & this we had no options to change the forward line about
As for Diame – I’d agree with Edinburgh that when he’s on song he offers some flair & somet none of our other midfielders can do but man is he one lazy git!!! I can’t remember at what stage it was last night but a WBA midfielder got the ball about 10 yards outside our box & Diame was the nearest midfielder about 2 to 3 yards away. You could see their man was lining up a shot & I think any midfielder worth their salt would have bust a gut to get some form of block or tackle in. Diame just stopped running
Have to agree – i thought Ben Watson (whilst not excatly setting the place on fire) was the best of the midfield trio last night.
That would have possibly gone to McCarthy if for whatever reason Bobby hadn’t hauled him off & replaced him with the completely ineffective Thomas. I also thought Diame was non-existant last night – some reward for McArthur’s good performances of late that Bobby ranks him behind Thomas, Diame & Watson but what do I knowAs for other players, i thought Di Santo was playing well up until about the hour mark when he just seemed to completely lose interest & i remember even N’Zogbia giving him a rollocking shortly before he was hauled off for an apparent lack of effort
N’Zogbia was superb in the first half but completely ineffective in the second (bar one run & shot)
Boyce got the complete run around from jerone Thomas in the second half – just how often did he have to show him inside & keep getting beat by him before he realised it was a bad idea
Figueroa looked good going forwad but poor defending
Gohouri – some good tackling/blocks but his distribution is akin to somet I see in the South Lancs Counties league on a Sunday morning
Caldwell’s – too slow at this level
Al Habsi – faultless
Rodallega – gets himself in to good positions but as someone else another thread has mentioned he seems to want to bust the net every time. His left leg is also next to uselessTaken from the BBC transfer deadline day feed:
“Mandeep Sanghera reports: “Wigan say no bids for Charles N’Zogbia, Hugo Rodallega or any of their players. There may be one arrival for the Latics, while Daniel de Ridder could be leaving them.” “
I remember my first year timetable at Preston Poly started on Tuesday afternoon and was done by 1pm on Thursday – exactly my kind of weeki think i averaged about 6 hours of lectures a week & then I had 6 seminars spread over a 2 week period so it was about 9 hours a week
Mind you I did a very “booky” degree & the the uni did recommend 3 or 4 hours of reading for every hour spent in a lecture or seminar which of course I followed to the letter!!! ;)
My sister on the other hand did a career based degree (environmental health) & was in from 9 till 5 virtually every day bar Wednesday’s (half days) which I always thought was a bit much!!did i really just read a thread using Messi & Kaka as an example of what Gomez brings to the Latics side??????????????????
My own personal opinion of Gomez is that he lacks the speed of thought & body to be a success for us at this level & the occasional good pass doesn’t make up for that
I also think that there’s a very good reason why the manager who bought him & announced to some fanfare that he was going to be the creative hub of the team, first backtracked & said he only wanted to ease him into action over the first season & now only plays him if he puts out scratch sides in the cups or we have an injury problem – i.e. he aint good enough
That said i by no means think he deserves some of the stick he gets on here & at matchesThen leave at half 4. :roll:What can a student possibly be doing until half 4 anyway, detention? :lolno:
Don’t tar all students with the same brush – in the dim & distant past when I was a student I remember having lectures scheduled from 5 till 6
Mind you having said that I thought it was scandalous & didn’t go to many of em. Likewise with those scheduled at the ludicrously early time of 9am!!!
So basically its “time to come together, even if you don’t believe in the manager, the players or the chairman, sing for the club, shout for the shirt, scream for your pride.”
Unless they sign someone you don’t like?????? :?
Just watched the goal again: http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/football/premier-league/video/allvideos-22327918/highlights-wigan-athletic-1-2-aston-villa-23964189 go to 1min 25 secsThere’s no one on the post when the ball is played in. McArthur ends up there when the goal is scored.
So before you go criticising people on other threads for having no evidence to back up their statements, make sure you practice what you preach. ;)
Fair point regarding the players on the post but by the same token not having anyone on either post when the corner was initially taken was not the reason the goal 1st goal was conceded on Tuesday, and nor was it the reason Newcastle got their late equaliser at St James’ Park
As such maybe its the initial poster you should tell needs evidence to back up his claims!!! ;)
I remember reading many years ago that this receiving a percentage of any transfer fee for a player is a very common clause & is inserted into most lower division managers contracts.
Its supposed to make up for the lower wages they receive & is an incentive to try & get them to bring through cheap/youth players & rewarding them for when they’re successful.
I’m pretty certain there was a bit of uproar many moons ago when Latics accounts showed Bryan Hamilton getting a massive wage one year & it was coz he had this clause in his contract
I know Blackpool are no longer lower league but they aint big payers & I’d imagine their contracts are loaded with incentives like this
If he’s better than what we’ve got at the moment (which he is) then I’d welcome him with open arms.
Personally I couldn’t care whether he’s spat at some celtic supporter who was giving him stick or arry de zeeuw for that matter or whatever else he’s alleged or been proved to have done – as long as he can produce the goods whilst wearing a Latics shirt then that’s enough for me
I’d rather have a team full of Hadji-Diouf’s than one full of mother theresa’s
