Has any club gone down the gurgler more than Coventry after moving into a new stadium?. Having just moved back into the Ricoh its now been sold to London Wasps. Makes you realise how lucky we were to have Mr Whelan and the Council working together on our gaff. Also WTF do Wasps hope to gain by moving from London to the Midlands?. Coventry already has a Rugby Union Club and the surrounding towns like Nuneaton,Hinckley, Atherstone and Bedworth are predominantly Leicester Tigers strongholds. This move by Wasps makes no sense on any level whatsoever. I feel sorry for Coventry fans and i’m certain they would have loved an owner like ours even though some think he is the anti-Christ. I personally count our blessings Mr Whelan is at the helm.

I’d say that Darlington went down the gurgler even faster & further after building a new stadium. Went bust & the phoenix club is now playing in the same division as Bamber Bridge & play their home games at Bishop Auckland’s ground.
Coventry’s problem from what I can gather is that they didn’t pay towards the funding of the ground at all as it was a council initiative. Any money made from the sale of Highfield Road seems to have gone into their coffers presumably to pay debts etc.. They then have to pay rent to use the stadium (a seemingly fixed amount agreed when they were at a higher level & with the hope of getting back into the top flight) & as their income went down they couldn’t afford to pay that amount & are unable to make any money from the stadium in terms of hiring it out.
Seems to me that they took a short term financial boost (new stadium without having paid & keep the money from highfield road) without thinking of the long term implications
Wasp’s it seems are now buying the ground & honouring the recent deal that got Coventry City back playing there but its Wasps who will be taking in the estimated £21mill a year that the Ricoh generates

Hyde United changed their name to Hyde F.C. in 2010, so not really no longer existing

Wigan Borough changed their name to Wigan Athletic in 1932, so not really no longer existing?
Wigan Borough folded & ceased to exist. Wigan Athletic are a separate club

Hyde United changed their name as it was a condition of them getting a wedge of money of Manchester City to allow their reserves to play there (City insisted they drop the United bit). They also insisted that they stop playing in red and get rid of all the red in their ground (seats, stands, crush barriers) – apparently the away fans regularly chant “You sold your soul for cash” at them.
Think the money must have run out coz they’re doing awful now

Anyway not really comparable to Wigan Borough/ Wijgan Athletic

Anyone know what the hold up is with the signing or announcement?

We’re using the McArthur sale to fund it?
Not according to Big Dave we’re not

He may be a blinder, as Forshaw could easily be but a blindman can see the release of big earners (proven) versus unproven cheaper options is the way we’re heading now.
In a perfect world we’d be keeping/getting all 4.

Only we don’t live in a perfect world – we live in the real one.
If that’s the way it is then that’s the way it is – we can’t go spending money that we don’t have unfortunately

I’d been to a fair few away grounds in my youth with my dad watching United & I think my first away game would have been for a the derby at Maine Road in the Platt Lane End at some point in the early 80’s

As a Latics fan (1987 onwards) my first away game was the 2nd leg of the 1st round of the Littlewoods Cup in 1987. Went in the home end with my mate & his dad who were Bolton fans & I think only my youth (I was 12) stopped me getting a kicking as a celebrated Bobbby Campbell’s third on the fence at the front of the Burnden Terrace

in reply to: lost support #133134

Why is anybody (Latics fan or not) either surprised or getting worked up about a fall in match going support now that Latics aren’t at as high a level as they have been for most of the last 10 years??
The more successful a team is, the higher its support. The less successful it is their support falls away.
As Mutty is a Sunderland fan take their support as an example. In 2003 when they got relegated from the top flight, their average attendance was nearly 40,000. In 2004 in the Championship it was just over 27,000 – a fall of 13,000 or 32.5%. In their last season in the Championship they averaged 32,000 & in their first season back up they averaged 43,000, a rise of 35.9%.
I’m not slagging them off for it, but it happens
In Bolton’s last top flight season they averaged 23,700. In their first championship season it fell to 18,034 (a fall of 23.9%) & last season it dropped to 16,141 (a further fall of 10.5%)
In comparison, Latics average last season was 21.6% down on the 12/13 season & so far this season it appears to be down further, although it’s only 2 games in, neither of which have been against the more glamourous sides which attract higher attendances.
Latics & their supporters (fair weather or not) are no different to anywhere else

Bolton and Blackburn lost at home to Bury and Scunthorpe. Its typical of how serious most clubs treat the early stages.

Bolton beat Bury 3-2 last night ;-)

Working in Liverpool, I meet a lot of Everton supporters – the vast majority that I’ve encountered rate Bobby & think he’s the best manager they’ve had since Kendall (first time round).

There have been some dissenting voices – a few whinges about baffling substitutions & a lack of ability to change his tactics during a game which cost them (the Arsenal cup game springs to mind).
There’s also been a few towards the back end of the season who said that at times the team can seem to pass for passing’s sake & even a couple who have questioned some of his signings – curiously enough 3 of the 4 signings he made from Latics aren’t highly rated by most of the Everton faithful. One contractor we use said that “he’s been alright, but if he signs any more f****n s**t Wigan players I might have to change my mind.”
I’ve also spoke with others who have said that on the one side he has got some players who were already there playing better (Barkley & Naismith) but on the flip side of the 9 players he brought in Lukaku, McCarthy & Barry have been great, the young lad from Barcelona was good but not used enough but the others weren’t very good.

Overall the majority seemed happy but there does seem to be some doubts as to how they’ll manage in the longer term as he gets to bring more of his own men in

We use to take gambles buying young players …

Do you mean like James Tavernier & Aaron Taylor-Sinclair?? Both young, both promising & both a bit of a gamble
That’s 2 of the 3 signed so far since the end of the season who fit your criteria – better get that renewal completed!!

It’s a decent enough idea, but the best thing about its use has been the player who threw a little mini-wobbler at the ref coz he sprayed it on his boots.

The best thing for me about this world cup, which sounds obvious, has been the games – I’m not normally a great watcher of the World Cup other than England games as I tend to find the over cautious approach of international tournaments incredibly boring.
That’s not happened here though & the high pressure, high tempo, playing to win style (as opposed to playing not to lose) has kept me watching most of the games – much to my wife’s anger!!

I’d say the Champions League final would suggest Spanish football isn’t in that much of a decline – especially in Madrid!

Redkappp as the next England manager? Are you serious? He’s a 4-4-2 big ‘un / little ‘un up frobt type of manager who is mediocre unless he has a bucket load of money to throw at buying players.

He’s just had by far the biggest budget in the Championship and managed to get his team to stumble their way into promotion through a fortunate win over Derby.

Personally I wouldn’t have Rogers or Martinez as England manager simply because they’re not English.

I think when saying Spanish football is in decline, that it’s important to draw a distinction between the Barcelona/Spanish national team tika taka stuff & then the Spanish league in general.
Coz in my opinion, neither Real or Atletico play that tika taka style – and even the style itself, whilst it bores me rigid, is not dead it’s just that IMO the Spanish national manager allowed his team to get too old whilst Barcelona lost their manager, had the new manager contract cancer & have to operate with a caretaker manager & then employ another one who didn’t seem up to it all whilst not refreshing the side & allowing the players to go a bit stale
Get the Barcelona off field situation settled & get both them & the national side refreshed with new players & they’ll both be back.

As for England I think the FA gave Hodgson a brief to oversee a transition from the old guard & bring through the new crop of youngsters & introduce a new style of play for the national side. Hence why he left Cole at home & made no attempt to try & persuade Terry out of retirement & why we saw a more front foot style at this World Cup.
The problem is IMO that all this went against Hodgson’s instincts as a manager. He had his most high profile success at Switzerland where he employed the solid, hard to beat style of the underdog similar to what brought Greece international success. Likewise in the premier league his success was at West Brom & Fulham where he did the same thing. When he’s had high profile jobs such as Liverpool & Inter Milan who expect more than that then he’s been much less successful.

As for who would replace him if he goes, which I don’t think he will (at least not until the Euro qualifying campaign possibly goes belly up), I’ve no idea. I’m not in the least bit bothered where the manager comes from but Rogers I don’t rate as his tactic seems to be to go all gung ho for the first 15 minutes & if that doesn’t work he has no other ideas &, well we all know Bobby has “no plan B” ;)

Players who ‘rise to the occasion’.

When did Beausejour ever do that for us?

Somehow, I think he too will find a new home for next season.
He certainly will. He’s out of contract at the end of the month & allegedly told Latics as early as last year that he didn’t even want to discuss a new deal with them
