Having heard some stories about Blackpool recently & can understand the fans anger – certainly not somet that a free ticket would help make me forget

in reply to: Herr Tinkerman does it again. #130200

That’s not to say players weren’t dropped coz they didn’t play well in the first leg but to say that he won’t tinker come play off time & that he’ll play his best 11 in each game doesn’t really have any fact to back it up

“Tinkering” to me indicates tampering without logic with a good/winning set-up. Brentford had drawn the first leg, so were seeking a win (I know that in the end they drew and went through to the final on penalties).

The Telegraph for the second leg said “With the weight of six abortive play-off campaigns on their shoulders, the Bees appeared devoid of confidence when the sides met 48 hours ago”, and that “Trotta and Harry Forrester, (were) recalled to the starting eleven…”

Changing a team that hasn’t played well and appeared devoid of confidence to bring in what he perceives as being better for the job in hand is not tinkering, just good management.
Only rather than just being a one off change as a result of a poor performance in the 1st leg, the Telegraph neglects to mention that he’d also made 3 changes in each of the preceding 4 league games prior to the play offs.
So I don’t think it was just a reaction to a poor performance. It’s what he does & to me it looks like either someone who doesn’t know his best starting XI or who feels that he has to make so many changes because is what you do
Don’t get me wrong I like him as Latics manager. I like his style of football & he has rescued our season. I just think that squad rotation for squad rotations sake can have a negative impact on performances and results. And it’s something that I think we’ve seen at times at Latics. I also think that under him Latics could also have done even better than they have if he hadn’t made so any changes from game to game
At Brentford it was also something that the players became increasingly unhappy about by the start of this season & by all accounts in a cards on the table post match meeting after they’ hadn’t won in the opening 5 games they voiced this, he stopped doing it & they won 9 or so on the bounce

And how on earth do you know that?

Using last season as an example, for Brentford’s second leg play off game Rosler made 4 changes from the team that had played the first leg.
None of those who played in the 1st leg but not the 2nd were injured as they were all on the subs bench. Of the 4 who played the 2nd leg but not the 1st 3 of them were definitely not suspended for the first leg as they were on the bench. I don’t know about the 4th one.
That’s not to say players weren’t dropped coz they didn’t play well in the first leg but to say that he won’t tinker come play off time & that he’ll play his best 11 in each game doesn’t really have any fact to back it up

Great deal for the seasiders however our season ticket prices are second to none as far as I’m concerned, wouldn’t mind a free pint with everygame that’s a great idea.

That discriminates against tea-total people and alcoholics
Who said it was a pint of anything alcoholic?

Mind you it is a concept that is used by Trafford FC in the Northern Prem:

They’ve nicked that idea from my boys in the League of Wales!! Never did it when I was there but their draught Carling Premier + cheese & branston barm combo was perfect to kill off that post-Friday night hangover

Should have been given more time IMO. It took fergie 4 seasons before he started winning things, but i suppose this is the sad reflection of modern football.

Where United were when Ferguson was appointed & where United were when Moyes was appointed make any comparison of how much time it took Fergie to start winning things a bit pointless
When Ferguson was appointed United hadn’t won the league for 19 years, the were 21st in the division, their youth set up had been almost dismantled under Atkinson & since May 1968 their “only” silverware had been 3 FA Cups. He had a very low starting point & United began to make progress on & off the pitch under him.
When Moyes was appointed, United had just gone through a period of almost unparallelled success for the best part of 20 years. Yes their star players were ageing & some of the younger ones aren’t up to the standards of those they’re replacing but those same players won the league last season by a margin of 11 points & with 89 points. This season they will just about scrape into the 60’s.
Theer are rumours that Moyes has “lost” the trust of some of the star players & even when Ferguson came in & went to town on & then shipped out some of United’s big names (& alleged big boozers) you never got those rumours.

Basically, ferguson took a low achieving club & started to progress them in all aspects even in those years that they didn’t win anything. Moyes has took last year’s champions & is unlikely to even get them into the Europa League positions this season. 2 completely different scenarios

McArthur always seemed to play in McCarthy’s shadow..

Of the 2 I always preferred McArthur
Although clearly a good player I never understood why McCarthy was as highly rated as he was. During his time here I rarely came away from a game thinking he’d stood out above others during the match but often thought/think it about McArthur.
Maybe McCarthy is one of those players who goes about his business quietly & effectively or maybe it’s just further proof that I know feck all about football!!

Birmingham away is also iffy as all their boozers are around new st so you have to be restrained .Not sure I would venture away on the choo choo now with this new breed of prats – embarrassment

Not had the pleasure of that one.
Chesterfield got quite lively once though – a group of em seemed quite intent on having a fight with me for some reason!!

in reply to: Dicko #130066

3 Latics managers had the chance to let him prove himself in the top flight & Championship & all 3 declined the opportunity to do so.
When on loan at Wolves at Latics current level he didn’t do much & was used as a late impact sub by Blackpool & the Blackpool fans I know (all 2 of em!!) said he wasn’t ready for regular starts.
That tells me all I need to know as to whether he should have been given a chance to prove himself.
He’s only scored with any regularity in the 3rd tier of English football & Latics aren’t at that level. He may well go on to be a great player but whilst he was with us I don’t think he was ready to play at the level the team were at. He wanted first team football, Latics wouldn’t give it to him & so he’d said he wouldn’t renew his contract this summer. As a result Latics decided to cash in on him & I assume that there’ll be some sell on clause in there if he does go on to be successful
I guess next season will give more of an indication as to whether he has a future at higher levels of the game

in reply to: train to burnley #130060
I remember that game when pat mc gibbon score that goal at the end also and it was no picnic getting out of there in a car never mind the train.
The stone island schoolchildren may find it a harsh lesson on Monday – not a place to venture to by train imo

I’m not wet behind the ears & used to go to all away games by train (back in the days I still qualified for a young persons railcard) and I’d agree completely with that last comment.
Of all the grounds I travelled to via the train, including probably more notorious ones like Millwall, it’s the only one I’d never go to again on public transport

in reply to: train to burnley #130058

I got the train to a Burnley game once (think it was the game where Pat McGibbon scored a late equaliser).
Feckin horrendous – from the train that seems to take an ice age, the train getting stuck in Oswaldtwistle for half an hour coz the bend in the track is too tight for the train to negotiate at a decent speed, the walk too & from Turf Moor from the train station with it kicking off virtually every step of the way & then it being topped off by a groups of Preston fans hanging round Blackburn train station waiting for Rovers fans to get back from wherever they’d played but deciding in the meantime that the odd Wigan fan was fair game.
Not one of the best away trips I’ve had
Never again!!!

Burnley v Blackpool, are you sure taht this is a bigger draw?

2 big old “sleeping giants” of the game going head to head in a “Lancashire hot pot derby” One who could seal automatic promotion if they win (& later results go their way) & the other who could wind up in the drop zone if they lose (& later results go against them) in a stadium that in all likelihood will be sold out & even it isn’t fully sold out will have nowhere near as many Burnley fans in it as would have wanted tickets

Up against a game involving Latics & Reading which will seal neither club’s place in the play offs, nor see em written out of it in a stadium (admittedly far bigger than Blackpool’s) which could easily contain everyone interested in watching it & still have seats to spare

Yeah, as unpleasant as it may be for a Latics fan, I would say that it would be a far bigger draw for Sky to show Blackpool v Burnley than Latics v Reading

in reply to: Latics on telly #129964

There is a basic pot which is shared equally to all teams in the same division but then there is also an amount given to a team when they are selected to appear which I think is supposed to cover (amongst other things) loss of revenue through the turnstiles when a game is on the telly

Unfortunately though I think people need to get round that Latics are not considered a big draw by TV executives, and I would have thought as they will see viewing figures for games involving all the teams when they’re on, that there is some statistical justification for that.
As I’ve said on other similar threads in the past the TV companies aren’t charities aiming to be fair to all the teams in the football league, they are private companies aiming to maximise income & they’ll do that by getting as big a viewing figures as they can so they can charge more for the advertising during a game & more subscribers.
Like it or not, Burnley v Blackpool, QPR v Leicester & Leeds v Forest will go further towards achieving that objective than Latics v Reading & Burnley v Latics

in reply to: Guardian’s You Are The Ref Feature #129933

To be fair to the ref with that one, i think he may have, at a push, been able to get away with the initial kick to bring him down. It would have been stretchign it a bit as it was a studs up in his stomach kick but I’d just argue that I didn’t have the best view of it – the several he dished out whilst the bloke was lying on the deck & not doing owt didn’t really give the ref much option though!!
I think the ref in the second one could have sold a caution over a sending off. Tried to just grab him to hold him whilst the setwards got there, he struggled & ended up falling to the floor!!

in reply to: Guardian’s You Are The Ref Feature #129925
None at all, really.

Each week they have a “guest” appearance, ie who the artist can draw that week.

The only relevance I suppose is that at least he is achieving prominence as someone worth featuring, unusual for Latics.

I went through the whole thing seeing if I’d missed the reference to him & then thought that maybe he’d put the questions forward??

I wouldn’t send the first guy off – maybe caution him & think of some reason why I didn’t class it as violent conduct. Reminds me of an incident at Hartlepool during our 96/97 season where Gavin Johnson clashed with a photographer he obviously thought was too close to the edge of the pitch & decided to boot all his gear up in the air. he only got cautioned that day if I remember rightly
For the second if the ball bounces off the field of play before it goes in play then its a retake
For the third pretty much what the main answer says
