Considering the amount of games we play and that Rosler has come in half way through the season the squad rotation and constant tinkering with the tactics is understandable.
I’d disagree
There’s no need for a manager to be making 4-6 changes from game to game regardless of how many matches they’ve played or when he became manager.
I understand the philosophy behind squad rotation & it can work where a manager might make a one off change but making so many changes from game to game is having an adverse effect on the cohesion of the team (or so it appears from the outside).
Looking at the last 4 games the Palace game showed 4 changes from the previous game, the Middlesbrough match showed 6 changes from the Palace game, the Charlton game showed 5 & the Huddersfield game showed a further 5 changes (these figures include Beausejour going from left wing to left back, to left wing & so on).
How are players supposed to develop any sort of partnerships or momentum if so many changes are being made from game to game?
What you’re getting at the moment is a good game from one team selection, followed by a poor one from another, followed by an improved performance from a team selection close to that in the first game, followed by another below par one from another changed selection.
The area of the team showing the least amount of changes (the defence) is the one where the least changes are being made from game to game – coincidence?
Rosler’s been in charge for 2 months now & it’s more than enough time for him to know which player’s are best for which positions. On the subject of what manager’s say publicly as opposed to what they say in the dressing room, there were 2 fellas on our transfer from Ljubljana to Maribor who work at the club on matchdays & have had access to what is said by the managers to players.
They wouldn’t give away owt confidential, but they did say that Bobby regularly used to tear strips off the players at full & half time. Proper hair dryer treatment by all accounts & then come out & publicly talk about how well they’d done.
As Griff says, it was obvious that he would rarely criticise the players in public so there was no point in listening to it. I’d imagine that Rosler is the same & so I think people need to learn again that what comes out of the manager’s mouth in a press conference isn’t neccessarily what he believes
[I didn’t make any comment about Coyle’s appointment although I felt underwhelmed by him being given the job and felt it showed little flair or ambition by the club, at the same time realising I was probably wrong and he was what we needed in the short term, so like most others was prepared to give him the benefit of doubt. To be honest at first I thought he got things right, he made the right noises, I felt his signings, including Holt, were just what we needed, even in the early games I thought things were good, he seemed to be able to turn games round when they were not going right, once this new team jelled we would do well.
A few games into his tenure a few things became obvious, the senior players who had come down from the premier league were poor and underperforming, we looked jaded and devoid of ideas during games, our thinking and play were much too slow in this new league, some of the long throw in, long ball stuff was just awful, and the problem was it was getting worse every game not better, teams that we should have been steam rolling were out playing us, things were not good.
To his credit Mr. Whelan saw it the same way and acted swiftly to get rid of Coyle.
Now the worrying thing for me, something that will probably bring out the howls of derision often aimed at my views, is I think we have jumped out of the frying pan into the fire.
I feel exactly the same about the appointment of Uwe Rosler, I just don’t get it, his CV has nothing on it that gives cause for great optimism, his team selections and tinkering have been baffling so far and our play has not improved we are still slow and lethargic going forward and we don’t create any goal scoring opportunities.
The most baffling thing for me though is the way he has been accepted by WAFC fans, with most message board pundits telling us how he will get it right and he is the man for the job, is this a backlash from the relief of getting rid of Coyle, who if we are being honest never really stood a chance with many for simply daring to manage Bolton in the past and bringing in a ex Bolton legend as part of his backroom staff or is there more to it than that.
LMB – the comment you highlighted was me referring specifically to Griff’s comment that he doesn’t recall seeing one dissenting voice when Holt was signed. I was pointing out that I can remember at least one regular poster on here not being impressed by him being brought on board. I thought it was you or someone else – obviously not you though!!
personally I think time will tell with Rosler. Some things I’ve been impressed with & others I haven’t – namely his apparent obsession with squad rotation. Making 4 or 5 personnel or positional changes per game is IMO killing any chance of momentum & partnerships building up & is leading to the sort of disjointed performances like on Saturday
Why he’s being accepted is probably due to a combination of relief at not having Coyle in charge, the fact that (prior to Saturday) we were picking up an average of 2 points a game & had only lost 1 in 12 & (for me at least) him talking of the style of football I prefer to seeToys thrown out the pram I see.
What’s their defence “We won the World Cup you know”?
West Ham are spot on challenging Carrolls ban,it’s a disgrace.
Not only should the original sending off be rescinded, Flores of Swansea should have been given a 3 match ban himself for what he did.
Once again the powers that run our game have shown that they have no stomach to wage a war on blatant cheating that is spoiling our game, nobody knows if what Carroll did was deliberate or not definitely but the TV footage clearly shows that Flores was guilty of blatant cheating to get a fellow player sent off and that is worse.[/quote]Whether it was deliberate or not is irrelevant. It was dangerous play to swing his arms round in that manner with someone in such close proximity & as such he deserved to go.
I don’t think McManaman intended what happened in that challenge with the Newcastle player last year but it was reckless & dangerous & he should have been sent offFlores did appear to make a meal of the contact – that’s currently a cautionable offence so he should have receievd a yellow for it
I only saw the incident for the first time just before lunch & for my money he deserved to go.
He may not have intended to crack him on the head, but he knew the other player was tangled with him, you could tell he was annoyed by what he felt was holding by the Swansea player & it looks like his arms are swung round in frustration at that.
Dangerous play for me when someone is so close to you & so he deserved to go – that Carroll’s arm only brushed off the top part of his head as opposed to his forearm smacking him full on in the face is irrelevant which is what West Ham appear to be forgettingWho knows, maybe a panel will look at it & decide that they’ve got really great fans who it would be unfair to deprive of watching Carroll play & it’ll get rescinded. I seem to remember that excuse being trotted out before!!
I don’t think that it was a knee jerk appointment atall & I think that Griff is right. he must have interviewed well. really f**kin well – said all the right things & impressed Whelan with his transfer targets (according to one journalist that is where McClaren fell short).
What baffled me though was how someone as astute as Whelan didn’t appear to do any research on Coyle. You could have pulled any Bolton fan off the street & they could have told him the horror stories that were coming from that club for quite some time before they got relegated & up until his sacking. Admittedly most of these would have come from “someone who knows someone who knows someone who fixes the plumbing at their training ground” but with his contacts in the game surely even couple of discreet words with such contacts would have uncovered some facts that would have set alarm bells ringing.
As it happens, to the outsider looking in, it just appeared that Whelan bought hook, line & sinker into Coyle’s “it was the injuries that done me” excuse. It didn’t take long for some of the exact same stories you heard about his Bolton days to start emerging from Latics camp & for my money it could have easily been avoided.
Maybe he did seek people’s opinions & maybe they came back positive (I’ve given good reference to people I couldn’t wait to see the back of in work) or maybe he asked, got bad feedback & thought he knew better. Who knows?Personally I thought it was a $h!te appointment & nothing I saw gave me any reason to think otherwise. His team selections were baffing, his tactics were garbage & he clearly had no idea how best to utilise the more skillful members of the squad like Maloney & McManaman.
As for his signings – some were good, some were crap & some were average. I thought Holt was a good signing but I wouldn’t have thought that if I’d know the position he was going to use him in
And in fairness Griff I can remember one poster (possibly LMB or filmoss) not being too chuffed with it though. Somet along the lines of whenever they’ve seen him he’d looked too fat, slow & immobileKerry Katona … She’d probably still get it though. Massive bangers. For teh second time in a week I’m gonna have to agree with you!!
Probably spouted this on here before but it pisses me off when man utd fans who have lived in Salford all their lives ask why I support Wigan when I am not from Wigan.Without going into my choice of team the town of Wigan has a population of approx 82K of which a large percentage of fans turn out to see their local team week in week out.
Salford has a population of 240K!! If the same percentage of fans from Salford supported their local team instead of riding the glory boat across the river irwell you would have 40K people turning out to see Salford City FC every week instead of 500.
If Salfordians call Wigan a rugby town then that makes Salford a rugby city ten times over.
Having run the line at Salford City on a couple of occasions, they don’t get anywhere near 500 on I’m afraid. Much nearer the 150 mark
To be fair to the residents of Salford, Manchester United have been playing at Old Trafford (almost litearlly a hop, skip & a jump away from the Salford boundary) since 1910 & Salford City weren’t formed until the 1940’s – Salfordians were therefore looking to United as “their” city’s club long before Salford FC arrived on any scene. They weren’t even part of the pyramid system till 1982
United is in effect their local sideAway from Beckham, 2 of his former team mates (Gary Neville & Ryan Giggs) are rumoured to be lining up investment in Salford City
I wouldn’t touch her with yours Salford (she was always below Ginger, Scary & Baby in my Spice Girls ranking) but I’d agree with everything else you put
Actually having thought about it, I saw Sporty on somet the other week & she’s improved with age so Posh is now bottom of the league I’m afraid – bet she’s gutted :pinch:
it’s a bit unfair to call him a pointless signing though given that he went on to have a fairly decent career at Luton town and he did have some bad injuriesI think the thing with Nicholls signing though was that he shold never have got through a medical in the first place.
His knee was knackered when he joined & kept him out till he made his debut (probably around October time) & he just looked completely unfit. Came back at the tail end of that season
He was involved though in most of the games the season after (Bruce’s cameo season)As garbage as she may have been at singing, she certainly has her head screwed on when it comes to business.
She’s the reason why they’ve got as much money as they have and she was (initially) the reason why they got noticed & were able to make it in America. But yes, she gets on my waz too
The pitch hasn’t been bad for years, since the last time that he club forked out a load of money on it anyway (which must have been at the end of Bobby’s first season).
Besides which, even if it has cut up already this season with the bad weather recently, that can hardly be blamed on the rugby league can it?
As for having the “worst pitch in the league” – I’ve caught bits of 2 games involving football league clubs on the telly this week. One was at Fleetwood where the pitch looked in no better nick that Latics’ did against Charlton, whilst the other was at Peterborough where the pitch looked far worse
I think that there’s always been a limit on the number of loan players in a squad & starting XI, but the loophole that Watford exploited last season was that it didn’t apply to players loaned from outside of the English league’s which was why they got a ton of players from the 2 Spanish & Italian club’s that their owners also own.
I remember reading an interview with a manager (possibly Ian Holloway) where he was complaining that whilst Watford hadn’t broken any rules, they’d bent them almost to breaking point & that it was sneaky & the FA should do something about it. Watford’s response was basically that other club’s were just jealous that they hadn’t realised it too.
I hadn’t read about it, but if the football league have changed anything this season then it must be to make the limit apply to this scenario tooDon’t dispute any of that. You said there were more intelligent players than Gomez – I presumed you meant in our squad. Who did you have in mind?I never said there were more intelligent players than Gomez – my previous reply was a rather long winded way of saying that I don’t class players as intelligent or not. They all have intelligence when it comes to reading the game & what makes a defender who reads the runs & movement of the opposition to prevent them scoring any less intelligent than a midfielder who is able to anticipate the runs if his team mates & pick em out with a pass?
I class players as good, bad or alright (it’s a very complex system!!!). For me Gomez averages as alright but has his good games & his bad ones -
