I seem to remember a game at home at the end of the 1995-96 season against Northampton Town.
Whelan had backed the then manager John Deehan very heavily in the transfer market and expectations were starting to rise.
Lost narrowly 2-1 and failed to make the play offs by a very narrow margin.
My main memory of this was after the game when a WIGAN RL fan was stood on his gate gloating at the very silent crowd as it passed his house near the ground.
He made then made a daft comment which was responded to very sharply with “ at least we’re not f*****g bankrupt” at which point the Rugby man beat a fast retreat as the grog was making moves to fill him in.Absolutely dire performance again , season end cannot come quickly enough.
Good luck trying to sell season tickets next season.9253

Worst performance this season!
World beaters Fleetwood with the non league standard ground made to look like Real Madrid , they must have thought it was Christmas again with all the gifts provided.
Lack of effort and fight , joke of a performance and fans should be refunded !9089
I saw the altercation at the bridge and could see fists flying about and agree not the sort of thing that will fill our ground with families and kids and the south stand looked very spartan last night.
I thought the policing was abysmal last night compared to recent encounters with Bolton though , not sure of the sense of allowing their supporters to converge at the bridge after the game with obvious results. One of the great nights that last night and one bit of real quality decided the game.
Relegation fears were probably buried for good last night and maybe time for Maloney to be a bit more adventurous particularly against poorer teams from now on.The home performances have been shocking lately and I’m struggling to see this bunch beating Bolton this Tuesday.
The first half against Cheltenham was one of the flattest and worst performances I have seen from ANY Latics team for many many years , so bad I almost left at half time.
Not sure why they play so badly at home and without effort or intensity.
Tuesday would have been the Sort of game for Lang and Wyke both experienced players but both no longer here and they always played really well against Bolton.
A draw I’d the very best hope for me.15434
Was like the Alamo near the end of that game but the lads did well to keep them out.
A major thing for any manager is whether the team gives their all and they certainly did that yesterday.
Onto Cheltenham this Friday and then Bolton and knowing this Latics team we can guess which game they will probably win out of those two.8472
Have to keep bringing young players through but supporters being patient is another thing.
Lose a couple these days and people start screaming for a management change.
When a club is in transition like Latics are at the moment you probably will get several seasons of mid table and plenty of mediocrity.
Alex Fergusons Man Utd model of the mid eighties had three seasons like this whilst he sorted out the failing youth policy.
Everybody needs to be patient and enjoy the wind when they come but understand there is a far better bigger picture.
Tickle , Thelo and Charlie were the best players again yesterday and all of them home grown.
Have to stay with it long term , future is bright I think.Best win and performance of the season.
